What do woolly pigs have to do with climate change? They’re part of a vital, ingenious and evolving strategy to take carbon out of the sky and store it safely — in trees, soils, the ocean, buildings, rocks and deep underground. Every carbon removal approach takes some combination of natural resources, human ingenuity and technology, says climate thinker Gabrielle Walker. If we get the mix right, we can clean up the environmental mess we’ve made, reverse the processes behind climate change and give nature a chance to heal. “What goes up must now come down,” she says.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

Could you explain why we are still here considering CO2 levels were 1,000x higher and the earth was 10 degrees hotter in the past?

    • HubrisNaut

      March 6, 2022 at 10:47 pm

@Samantha so? We could have lived then like so many species did,. The supposed ‘threat” is CO2 and temperature is going to end human existence… Is that right?

    • HubrisNaut

      March 6, 2022 at 10:53 pm

@Lane Atkinson Before “modern humans” but not before our ancestors. A greater diversity and biomass of plants and animals existed then. You don’t like that?

    • Lane Atkinson

      March 6, 2022 at 10:59 pm

@HubrisNaut Ok, so when exactly did this take place?

    • HubrisNaut

      March 6, 2022 at 11:23 pm

@Lane Atkinson I do have to correct my number It was 6 to 18 times greater. not 1,000x… that multiple is ridiculous. we would be dead

    • Polivarz

      March 6, 2022 at 11:23 pm

The main problem isn’t the levels themselves, but that the rates at which carbon dioxide levels and global temperature are rising are much faster than even in the distant past.
Many organisms aren’t able to evolve and adapt to this fast enough. Yes, life can and will survive a much warmer planet, but the rate of temperature increase means, if it continues unchanged, there will be an even greater mass extinction event than is currently happening. Life will recover, but many species we humans depend on (be they crops or wild keystone species) may not survive.
Add to this that a warmer climate has increased the rate of natural disasters, can create deadly combinations of heat and humidity over large areas, and lead to sea level rise, and human civilization as we know it essentially has to be moved and rebuilt- many large cities would be flooded, lots of land used for agriculture becomes useless, either too salty or dry, and more needs to be spent on mitigating and cleaning up after natural disasters. Sure, new land in the far north becomes usable, but it has to be developed from 0, at huge cost, without even going into the issues from such mass migration.
In short, yes it has been hotter in the past, but the temperature change over time was much much slower, so most organisms evolved alongside the change, rather than having a mass die off. The same goes for modern civilization – it is very much adapted to the current climate, and while humanity has survived multiple climates, building flood defences everywhere or relocating modern civilization would be prohibitively expensive

Here in Europe, after Russia-Ukraine war, we are reactivating carbon plants, as only alternative to gas from gazprom. People do not want nuclear, don’t want Eolic, since noisy and ruining the panorama, so that… I really think that we will be not carbon neutral for the next 100 years. I hope nuclear fusion plant will become a reality before, it is the only way.

    • FunBotan

      March 6, 2022 at 8:36 pm

Nuclear fusion has all the same problems as fission multiplied by the price of R&D. I’d rather bet on renewables + good storage, but that’s also a thing of the future.

Meal worms can eat and Digest most forms of plastic, even chemical Laden plastic.
If every Citizen Used a meal worm bin to dispose of their trash, instead of having trash trucks Roaming our cities weekly, We could use our trash to make excellent compost to grow food at home.
    It shortens our supply lines…
    Increases the health of citizens…
    Reduces centralized systemic dependence…
Categoric reduction in many industrial sources of CO 2 emissions….
Helps the environment, saves us all money and eliminates jobs that people just don’t want, But are currently needed.
Also biogas generators powered by lawn trimmings and human waste can run a Sterling hot air engine to generate power and heat water…
The CO 2 and water vapor from burning methane can be used in a greenhouse to help plants grow faster.

She works at valencesolutions and in their who they work with section on their website they listed companies like shell and other major polluters . Why I listed this is because I watched video recently where it showed these oil companies have been pushing for carbon offsets or removel even when they know its not going to have an affect for 10 to 30 year . The thing that USA needs To do is investment in green energy rather than this

    • Delta Novum

      March 6, 2022 at 8:51 pm

We really don’t have any proper way to do any meaningful carbon removal as of now. It’s yet another bullshit spin on things by the big corporations. Same thing happened with recycling plastics and the symbols they use for it. Or when BP and others poured millions of dollars into PR campaigns to make us think we ourselves can actually make a big change with our carbon “footprint”. It seems TED has gone the way of many others. Towards the money. Sad.

    • Samantha

      March 6, 2022 at 9:32 pm

A good thing abt carbon capture I saw on a vice video is that they can actually use it to make a cleaner form of gasoline that is just pure carbon, which it technically net zero since it uses carbon from the air. And current vehicles can run on it if it is developed, so at least the corporate money goes to science I guess :/

    • Polivarz

      March 6, 2022 at 10:54 pm

@Samantha that sounds like biofuel with extra steps – it might be a way of storing energy, but that’s ab ok it where the benefits stop – the process is inefficient (you’ll be spending far more energy getting the carbon from the air than you’ll get from the fuel – reducing the concentration of something that makes 0.04% of the atmosphere is really difficult! It would be far more efficient to use passive carbon capturing processes (plants and mineral) for atmospheric carbon dioxide, than to use renewable energy to power carbon capturing machines. This however runs into problems of land use – nature has barely any room today, when we use agriculture mainly for food – if we use it for fuel too, there will be even more demand for land area, leading to the destruction of the last wild areas on earth, which also happen to be some of our best carbon sinks.
Also, this bio-gasoline you mention chemically cannot be pure carbon – that would make it solid or a powder, not compatible with current vehicles.

    • Joshua Cheng

Thinning the atmosphere that much would be impractical. We just need to reverse/capture 150 years of excess carbon emissions.

Could Bitcoin mining rigs that also use a lot of energy and also use lots of fans, be combined somehow into those air carbon capture machines? If you’re blowing air, at massive scale, surely adding a capture device (is it a particulate filter?) to the system design would be a huge win/win? The whole system pays for itself?

    • Cubuzz

      March 7, 2022 at 12:22 am

I’ve worked with large scale server farms in the past, and although they’re slightly different, I’ll give it my best shot. The problem is that these farms operate in enclosed spaces with one primary ventilation system. This system is designed to extract the thermal capacity out of the building. On smaller farms that might be different, but on larger farms usually coolant liquids are used (basically AC for servers). So there’s little to no air circulation.
Additionally, Bitcoin is proven to be inefficient. Proof of Work might be relatively secure, but its energy cost overpoweres all benefits in my opinion. Other cryptocurrencies, like Ethereum, are currently transitioning to Proof of Stake, a much more efficient method. You can find bunch of articles about that online.
Tl;Dr: Farms don’t provide air circulation. Whilst some designs might make that possible, it would take a lot of adaptation. And the power has to come from somewhere, so mining Bitcoin there wouldn’t make sense (as of right now).

  18. Ahmed

    March 6, 2022 at 11:11 pm

You can keep throwing fancy methods of carbon capture at me all day, but in the end, where’s the basic anlysis of their efficiency?
The 1 MILLION tons of capture is still basically nothing compared to the 43 BILLION tons of CO2 being emitted every year, for reference, that factory removes about 0.002% of the CO2.
Wouldn’t it have been better to spend a higher portion of the money towards making a larger scale project that would stop a bigger amount of CO2?
So far, all of this is a fantasty that only makes us feel better, yes, in order to get out of the hole we need to climb, but first, we need to stop digging.

    March 6, 2022 at 11:51 pm

With so many carbon removal methods out there, putting a price on carbon will let them compete. With the price of oil rising due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there is new momentum for solar, wind, batteries and electric powered transportation and building heat.

    Yang mulia, Bpk. President..
Aku seorang Gadis yang cantik dan Manis.

Aku juga admin. Kayak layaknya mereka Gadis Indonesia umumnya.

    Bpk. President..
    Setelah aku baca Sejarah,
Mengapa Peristiwa-Berdarah selalu dimulai dari Europe?

    – World War I
    – World War II
tambah lagi Europe: Mereka menyalakan Perang dalam Cold-War/ Perang dinging, antara Soviets dan USA.
Kita pun secara tidak langsung, ikut terpengaruh dalam tragedy itu. Mengapa?

    Tuan Presiden..

    Bisnis mereka adalah Peperangan.

    Ya, dan Bagaimana tidak!
    Perdagangan mereka adalah; SENJATA, BOM,
    AMUNISI, dan PELEDAK.

Sejatinya, merekalah: Perusak Bumi yang SEBENARNYA.

Kemungkinan ya, Mereka akan meraup banyak UNTUNG
dalam tiap – tiap peperarang itu.

    Namun, mengapa??

    – mereka menuding secara luas,

    bahwa:
” AGAMA adalah BIANG dari misi Perang-Dunia. ”

    ” AGAMA adalah Sumber penyebab
    dalam Conflicts berdarah berikutnya. ”

    Sungguh,
Anggapan yang demikian, tidaklah selamanya benar!.

    Argument mereka, nampaknya Keliru.
serta Ucapan mereka, ‘ hanyalah Omong Kosong.’

    Ketahuilah, setiap # Agama mengajarkan
    Kedamaian, mengatakan kebenaran bahwa:
    Membunuh satu orang tak bersalah,
Sama halnya, merusak bumi dan membunuh umat Keseluruhan.

    Justru, # Agama sebagai soluti

Tuhan menurun kan # KITAB SUCI.
    dan # PeranAgama di # Bumi🌎🌏🌍,
    itulah # Solusi.

    Thank you | Terimakasih.
    dan Salam Sehat!.

    We love you.
    🙂

A lot of talking, no science or numbers. As far as my research goes, carbon capture with any tech is a fantasy. Carbon capture using plants is more adequate for the scale, but we are not growing forests, quite the opposite. This video shares no interesting facts and bathes in its own wishful thinking about “cleaning the Earth”.

All these solutions sound promising but it doesn’t adress the main source of Carbon, us humans. Thanos was right when there are too many mouths to feed depleting resources and damaging the environment, half of the population should not exist in the first place.

I take it you don’t include yourself in that half?

    • Samuel Zev

      March 8, 2022 at 9:58 am

@hootsmin no because I’m a responsible and conscious person with the environment. The half that should die are the irresponsible people like Donald Trump. CoVID should have taken Trump out but didn’t, i was disappointed.

What the fruitcakes need to know is that with no CO2 there can and will be no life in earth as we know it. 5th grade biology told me that plants feed off CO2 and therefore create oxygen. So, to keep it as simple as possible for you: No CO2 = No Plants = No Life! Dinosaurs were big because the world was rich of CO2 and therefore the plants were big creating more oxygen

….CO2 is food for plants.. .not our enemy… please educate yourself….you claim to be scientist…this is madness… sulfur and other side products of fossil fuel is poisonous, not CO2….plants consume CO2 and give as O2 (oxygen).. basic photosynthesis process….please do science, not politics…who pays you?

Lovely idea… So how many tons of rock, or how many years of tree growth per hectare compensates for the Australian wild fires from a year or 2 ago?

To get an idea of scale…?

Frankly, I think the idea of growing trees, burning them and capturing carbon is the most efficient. Largely because you can put financial pressures and regulations on this. And we all want power anyway, and more and more of it.
The other public works dont sound applicable in our economic system.

One of the major projects humanity needs to do is convert deserts into forests, etc. It has been proven many times that deserts can be converted into sustainable forests which regenerates the rain cycle, traps water, etc. Many deserts receive a lot of water but it turns into flash floods and causes erosion, etc.

This is the first time I’ve heard about this! Sounds very interesting but also quite challenging (also when considering local ecosystems would probably be altered). Would you mind pointing me to some resources on this please?

Regenerative Agriculture is the key process. It needs animals to recycle the growth. Nature’s plan.

The main solution is to regenerate ecosystems.

There are jungles that have so much oxygen that it changes the composition of the air. That’s because of plants. Plants are the most sustainable and effective method.

My only question about fighting / reversing climate change is this: isn’t the Earth naturally heating up anyway? Like leaving an ice cube in a glass of water? Sure, man kind if accelerating the process, but either way the end result is the same, save an extraordinary event such as a super volcano or asteroid impact setting into motion another ice age. Of course, people think their homes and driving are the issue, but it’s not. It’s primarily from the use of concrete and secondarily from over breeding livestock (methane), but by and large concrete, which sad to say is never going away since many countries are just starting to industrialize and modernize.

    • Max M

      March 8, 2022 at 6:12 pm

Actually, the Earth would naturally be staying at a constant temperature or even be cooling slightly! As you mentioned, a lot of factors can play a role in our planet’s temperature and if we only take natural conditions into account, climate models would actually predict a slight cooling of the Earth

    • Peter Clark

      March 8, 2022 at 11:01 pm

Our internal core is molten rock. We get insolation from the sun. Yet the surface has supported life for billions of years. Ergo: there is a regulation of the surface temperature that works.
FYI, the deserts of this planet are man-made; we killed off the grazers who recycled the energy in plants and grazers burp methane but they were still there when mankind showed up.
Regenerative Agriculture is the key and it needs lots of CO² (airborne fertiliser) to do what it does best, support the key element in the constant recycling chain, the soil.

  56. Peter Clark

    March 8, 2022 at 10:50 pm

The best way is to go back over the Science and find out where it screwed up. This planet self-regulates (e.g., more heat = more clouds = more albedo effect). The Carboniferous had CO² levels in the 7,000ppm and it flourished, laying down the oil and coal we use today. Basically any successful attempts to remove CO² will just lead to more desertification (and less food). The GHGs effect on the spectral analysis are small, are overlapped by water vapour and can be ignored. The real problem is non-biodegradable pollution and we’re all guilty of that, therefore AGW is a red-herring, designed to transfer the blame from the people to governments. Regenerative Agriculture is the most positive tool we have as it can be used to restore the man-made deserts (which is all of them): Nature does diversity and recycling – through the soil. SO buy from these farmers, enrich them to buy more land, and get our waterways cleaner, no more bare earth and work on solutions, not self-perpetuating stupidity.
