One of the first things you’ll want to do with a Steam Deck handheld gaming PC is figure out how to install non-Steam games on it. I’ve already gotten some games from GOG.com running on the Steam Deck, but following this tutorial from Gaming On Linux (an excellent website and YouTube channel) got me playing games from my Epic Games Store library too. Our colleagues at GameSpot also have an excellent tutorial.

It would be great if you guys could credit who made this guide to begin with, hard to digest that something like CNET would suddenly become experts at Linux right after Gaming on Linux uploads their guides and content…

I just want to play the Shenmue Trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and God Of War (2018) on the go. I think my phone covers most retro games up to GameCube/Wii. Has all my top 25 favorites from 3rd to 6th gen. Deck will handle 7th and 8th gens.

“One of the first things you’ll want to do with a Steam Deck handheld gaming PC is figure out how to install non-Steam games on it.”

Oh really? That’s quite the assumption. I play my Windows games through Steam so I don’t need Epic freebies on my Deck. Emulators, yes. (Really not hard to add emulators to the library though.) Just not sure why you think everyone wants to know how to put Epic on a Deck. Tim lost his battle against Steam for a reason. A lot of people really do not like Epic, and most of those who do use the launcher run off as soon as they’ve got their easy pickings.

Epic has somehow convinced games media that the amount of people mooching on them for free games is larger than it is. There’s a reason games still make sure to release on Steam as soon as their exclusivity contracts are up though. There’s just a lot more users on Steam actually willing to pay for their games for a good experience on a superior platform.

There will be plenty of people who will want to run the different launchers on this. I’m not a huge fan of the epic store as its feature set is lacking, and it is very slow to load between different areas. But getting my gog library on the deck when I get one will be huge for me.

I just order a 512gb model on Friday lol finally pre-order, but obviously it’s going to be a loooooong time before my order is even available, but gives me time to decide if I want to keep it or not. Especially since there might be more competition in this space + a steam deck 2 maybe next year. Thanks for showing us how to install Epic games store.

Actually a much better way of getting Epic games running on Linux is to install the Heroic launcher. Because this launcher is built for Linux, it has scripts that’ll help you set up these Windows games properly to work.

    • Ronin van der Werke

      March 8, 2022 at 3:53 pm

Isn’t that not available due to steam os being write only?

    • prof ty

      March 8, 2022 at 4:23 pm

tried this, you cannot get games to actually launch from the steam UI for epic or GOG (it just fails) and for me cloud saves did not work at all.

    • BlackWorm

      March 8, 2022 at 4:27 pm

@prof ty Works fine for me. Install ProtonUP-QT so that you can add Proton-GE support to Heroic. Then install the games using the Heroic launcher. You can then if you want to, add the games as non-steam games to the Steam UI.

      @Ronin van der Werke what?

      March 9, 2022 at 12:27 am

Will that launcher (HEROIC) you mentioned work with 2k games? Looking to grab one to play GTAV and WWE2K22 just to highlight some games I’ll be playing full time.

  25. Vincent Kang

    March 8, 2022 at 5:59 am

My question is how is Linux performance versus windows performance.

    • Manny B.

      March 8, 2022 at 10:39 am

Is good and improving daily. Some games Linux is more performant , on a few others windows is a bit more but not really worth the hassle unless is a game not compatible with the Linux Proton layer.

So unless you want to run games that don’t run at all (like some kind of anti cheat) then not worth the time installing windows.

  26. gilkesisking

    March 8, 2022 at 11:09 am

Use the Heroic launcher but NEVER pay for games from EPIC to run on Linux, they don’t support the system and will NOT help you or refund you if it doesn’t work or an update breaks it. Free games only, thank me later.
