Hindi + indie, as in indie cinema. Hindi is properly pronounced like “hin-thee,” but with the pun, she’s saying “hin-dee,” combining Hindi and indie.

The origin of songs in Bollywood due to local theaters happening across India covering epics like Ramayana or Mahabharata. Ram leela plays happening all over India created the inspiration for first movie Ayodhyecha Raja by Dadasaheb Phalke who brought movie magic to India

A reverse question- Why are Non Resident Indians so outdated with Bollywood, often seeming ’stuck in the 90s’ 🙂 The only new ones you’re talking about are the ones heavily marketed in the West.

  19. @its_vkj

    October 13, 2026 at 6:09 pm

Stop calling Bollywood the mainstream industry – she said it 5 times. Hindi films over the last few years have been garbage compared to Telugu and Tamil productions. “Dhurandhar” was an exception and even that had a nationalist agenda.

Hello! Thanks for watching the video. This was a lot of fun to make with the wonderful team at Wired. The Indian film industry is huge and varied. It has a long history and legacy, and continues to make films that are worth discussing for all sorts of reasons. It’s hard to encapsulate everything in under 30 mins, and the WIRED team did a commendable job.

Of course, there are things that I missed. Malayalam cinema, for one. I am a huge fan. Two fun (and superhero related) films I recently enjoyed watching are Minnal Murali and Lokah: Chapter 1 (Chandra). There are too many others to list here, but happy to have a conversation about the range and depth of Malayalam cinema.

Satyajit Ray deserves a separate video, IMHO; not a passing mention.

I am curious to watch Ramayana, slated to release Nov 5, 2026, and see how far the VFX have come in Hindi cinema/Bollywood — especially after the spectacles created by S. S. Rajamouli.

For those interested, I am wearing a handloom kalamkari cotton sari. These saris are handpainted by master artisans, using a bamboo pen and natural dyes.

Maharashtra was not province during British rule. The province was called Mumbai only.

Maharashtra was created few years after independence.

She looks Indian but she’s getting many answers wrong.

Actually after this, I’m questioning credibility of Wired itself. How could you hire someone so mediocre?

Many of these answers beat around the right bush but don’t hit the spot. Like the first question on the term Bollywood harks back to adopting the industrial model of big studios – only for Hindi films – starting in 1920s in Bombay – rather than inspired by the Hollywood movies. Then, a key characteristic of Bollywood movie songs is that they are often depictions of psychological states – like exploring one’s sorrow or joy – so imaginary elements may be included – and the Indian audience never mistakes it for actual reality or a continuation of the film’s narration as in a Western musical. Such subtle points were overlooked in the answers.

What is the film where the kid builds a statue of the guy that refuses to train him. He then trains (in archery i think) with the statue but then the guy finds he trained with the statue and demands he cuts off his thumb as a cost for training.
There was a bit when he was going to shoot an arrow at a straw bird target on top of a castle, and someone asks him to describe the bird and the kid says he can only see the eye and shoots the arrow through the target birds eye

Hmm, many of the answers start off well but seem to run out of steam. The whole framing is problematic as well. If this is Bollywood Support, perhaps a poor choice to pick questions about Tollywood or Kollywood because you are not gonna be able to answer those with any depth. And when she repeatedly uses Indian Cinema and Bollywood interchangeably, it really starts to irk…

I am Indian and grew up with Indian movies. To this date, the songs in between the movies take me out of the immersion and ruin everything for me. I don’t like it when people go to excessive lengths to defend this style. Everyone has different tastes, but you can’t blame people who don’t like this as just ignorant

  94. @rajarshichakraborty8862

    October 16, 2026 at 10:29 am

She got the first answer wrong or atleast didn’t provide the necessary details. The first film industry in south asia or outside of the US in general to use the portmanteau -ollywood was the one based out of Tollygunge, where the bengali film industry is located. Tollywood (Bengali) is what popularised the term in the 1930s, it wasn’t until the 1970s that the one based out of Bombay started using the term as well, other industries in india started following suit thereafter.

PrettyBoi Hrithik is the Brat Pitt of Bollywood. Amitabh is the tall Al Pacino. SRK is certainly not pretty, he’s a salesman. She needs to get her glasses checked.

I have many Indian friends here in the USA, and they are incredible people, truly hospitable toward me. They have helped me and my wife multiple times when we completely ran out of money, without ever asking for anything in return.

I don’t think Bollywood cinema is mainstream anymore. South Indian cinema is in another league altogether! Many Bollywood movies are remakes of South Indian movies or foreign movies.

for every question that asks and ‘why’, you never answered it. just stated a fact without explaining the why it self. why Bollywood wood have songs? “bollywood had them in 50s, 60@ and upto 90s but less in contemporary.” but whhhhyy?

    • @fark69

      October 19, 2026 at 3:25 pm

  135. @paperspeaksco

Just admit that we don’t pay (or respect) our CGI artists. Bollywood is an elitist system where if you’re not a lead actor, you’re basically expendable.

  136. @rimibchatterjee
