Perhaps the simulation is the way the super-intelligence replicates / procreates. When we’ve achieved what we think is true machine intelligence here in the simulation … that’s just the birth of a new super-intelligence. The Terminator-style obliteration of reality is just birthing pains.

They don’t use our literal electricity they use our consciousness. We have imagination and all that to push the world forward. Creating, building, all of that.

I always find it interesting that the newest prevailing idea of what reality is for humans is based on the latest technology. The first humans worshiped animals for their strength and power. After we developed farming, humans valued a higher intelligence known as God, because we lacked the technology to explain our natural world. Now that we live in the technological age, we see that A.I. has the potential to be God, in a sense that it has the power to can create realities. It makes me wonder what the next form of evolution will be, after computers and A.I. If A.I. is just a machine that can solve small problems at an infinite scale, I would guess that the next step is a technology that doesn’t just solve problems but is able to ask the right questions.

  14. GCM

    December 15, 2021 at 10:39 pm

4:13 yeahhhhh…. that’s a BIG leap in faith. We don’t even understand what consciousness is, let alone have any idea of what kind of technology could replicate it. Consciousness could be very much an artifact of quantum effects that are diametrically opposed to our current – binary and deterministic – framework of computing.

The #1 reason why we are NOT LIVING IN A SIMULATION is because we can conjure that we are living in a simulation. The REALITY behind our existence is simply unknowable.

  17. David McCarthy

    December 15, 2021 at 11:51 pm

So if we are in a simulation now, then what happens when we advance enough to create our own simulation. Just nesting simulations forever or does the hypnosis break down at that point.

  21. Chris Trajectory

    December 16, 2021 at 12:42 am

I doubt his hypothesis. Consider using a computer to simulate a single hydrogen atom. Solving for the wavefunction is not trivial. Then, consider solving for that of a single molecule or neuron- this would be a gargantuan task necessitating huge amounts of computing time and electricity. Multiply this by around infinity to account for all of the other fields and properties of all other matter in the universe, and then multiply it by about infinity again to account for their infinite interactions–The sheer, stupendously enormous computing task, even with something like quantum computing doing it in parallel, makes me wonder why an advanced civilization would bother conducting such an experiment.

look at unreal engine 4 and then look at the tech leap to unreal engine 5 and then imagine the possibilities

    • Chris Trajectory

      December 16, 2021 at 1:07 am

@burgercat The UE4 trailer is nice, of course. But all it is is polygons. For an *actual* simulation, it would need to individually simulate every single particle, in terms of gravity, electromagnetism, fluid dynamics etc. You would need the computing power of the entire earth just to simulate a tree or something

    • burgercat

      December 16, 2021 at 1:24 am

@Chris Trajectory i think you should have a look at what ue5 can do. they are not using the same polygons anymore. and the problem you are mentioning is basically being handled on some level. you can see the massive leap in tech while requiring almost the same amount of power.

Resolving ethical questions around suffering should be dealt with first. It’s time to stop blaming God of Satan for all the suffering humans experience, particularly to admit that humanity, or the so-called human-condition, is the cause of suffering (including that Buddhist problem of desire). This is not a simple problem. If we are going to create a virtual world, then we are going to become The Creators; and if there will be no way to escape that world, then those suffering there will blame its creators the way so many today blame God or Satan.

  28. TesserId

    December 16, 2021 at 1:00 pm

No, a _clear_ pill. We need a capacity for reflection that brings clarity to our capacity to reflect on and distinguish all layers of the human experience, and do so with clarity. We already have too many socially constructed filters, and true reality can not perceived if these gauzy curtains cannot be swept aside

The last thing I would do is design AI to be on the side of humans with human intentions. I don’t know that Nick meant that statement to be complete. Maybe it should be, “To design AI to be pro-human life above all other functions”. Maybe this too is problematic, would AI robots then go to bat for pro-life organizations? But if so, they might also be unable to carry out violence against pro-choice advocates? Better put a big heat sink on the CPU brain of that AI robot!

The simple fact that we exist reveals that we are living in a simulation, Gods simulation. God is infinite and everything that has been done and yet to be done, God has already seen it all in an instant. We are playing on a loop for all infinite time. We have lived an infinite lives as God experiences infinity through us. All these lives are yours, you just dont know it, because God doesnt want to know it. Just as the trillions of cells in your body live out each second of the day unware they’re trapped inside a body, like the millions of humans in a city scattering about. God is whatever you want it to be, because anything you can think of is God. Dont mistake me for saying God is Allah or Jesus or Satan.

As a cognitive researcher, I can with 100% certainty state that most humans are living in artificial simulations of mental simulacra, created by social and corporate constructs, fed by information ecosystems, designed to sustain a symbiotic supersystem within which the species and with it the system itself can evolve ever higher forms of consciousness and collective consciousness.

Buddhism indicated simulation waaaaay back a lot of modern vernacular can be perceived to have parallels.. Escape the wheel of life via following of the 4 noble truths and 8 fold path in order to imbue correct karma and not have to reincarnate and thus ascend beyond the cycle of life death and rebirth.

Modern version = Transcend this polarity instilled matter based reality via increasing ones energy via positive action which allows one to pass certain dimensional (or frequency) barriers and enter other forms of existence.

Of course one could go all cheat mode for a quick peek behind the scenes and just take a breakthrough dose of DMT lol.

    Simulation = Creation

Just got up to point you mention Buddhism and Plato..

“Demon” = Demiurge and some would say “Archons” = Agents

How do we know we are trapped in a simulation?

and not just a program ourselves, who are part a system.

Humanity lends way to much self importance to “Existence”.

  50. Alec Leigh

believing or speculating that we are in a simulation is the equivalent to when we thought the universe/sun/stars revolved around earth. cause once you go out of this simulation, you”ll ask yourself the same question if that new reality is a simulation too, and the question eventually becomes endless. It’s once we come in to contact with more advanced civilizations (both technically/scientifically and spiritually more advanced than us) that the question either becomes more relevant or irrelevant.

With the right gear and dull enough senses or spot check as we would say in D&D. If your spot check is really terrible then why wouldn’t it seem and feel like real life?

We are cells in the universe, which is the inside of a brain of a bigger head. And that giant head is talking to other giant heads about the possibility of living in a matrix. Same as our brain cells that must be having the same discussion inside our dark skull.

So they are now creationist as its not evolution but simulation ? They dont want energy…..but cognitive and creative abilities of the brain of the people

    So it’s a loop🔄 now:
Human start with the belief in GOD creating human and all creations (which is the rightful religions came with through human history) to disbelief in all religions (Western abolition of church for misleading reasons) adobting natural selection and accidental universe..
then with the quantum physics and computer age we back to square one with this silly idea of “we are living in a simulation created by super intelligence architect” which is some fancy description of these genuis people returning to sense and believe in God again 🤦

But it’s really beautiful to know bostrom’s theory. Will recommend to watch his conversation with JRE or Lex.

One of the indicators that we are living in a computer simulation is that as soon as there is peace on earth someone attacks. All throughout history. For example as soon as the cold war ended Iraq invaded Kuwait and Serbia attacked Kosovo/Croatia etc. Read up on the history of Europe. As soon as one war ended another country attacked a neighbor. It’s almost like they had to. The history of the Peloponnesian War is the same — city-states attacking each other for little gain.
