NGL I think this shows why you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. I’m sure there are tons of people who might take a look at a black guy with dyed spiky hair who says he’s a musician and immediately assume that he’s just a rapper and not realize that he’s actually a highly skilled keyboardist with perfect pitch.

This dude’s kinda annoying. Plus he has perfect pitch. That makes me jealous.

If the stylophone used a cheap microcontroller instead it would probably be spot on! I don’t quite get the 555 thing. Or is it supposed to be a little out of tune?

  11. The Stitch Guy

    November 17, 2021 at 11:18 pm

A stylophone is not a mini xylophone 😂

  12. The Stitch Guy

Though this a video on the silly side, it’s still refreshing to have an artist with such talent reviewing instruments. He brings a level of credibility to the table that isn’t seen all the time.

It takes a special kind of heart to be able to see something redeeming in garbage instruments and then love them for it. That’s what I love about Jon Batiste! Also, his mad genius vibe with anything music.

  29. Jed Reston

    November 18, 2021 at 6:07 pm

This is more of a universal acid test to Jon Batiste’s character and spirit as opposed to a review of gadgets. Jon’s a humanity gem.

  36. eltedioso

    November 18, 2021 at 10:24 pm

The Stylophone has an adjustable pitch dial on the back (at least mine does), so it’s not out of tune, it just wasn’t calibrated

    My snobby musician remark:

Not a miniature xylophone, stylophones sound nothing like the xylophone and they aren’t played at all the same way

And hold up you know what, as a percussionist this is something that gets on my last nerve, Marimbas and Xylophones are NOT the same instrument and those words cannot be used interchangeably; the same for vibraphones and glockenspiels. But it’s particularly bad with Marimbas and Xylophones, Xylophone is a high pitched wooden percussion instrument that’s played with hard mallets and sounds super loud and staccato, personally I don’t like the sound too much. Now marimbas are a much lower register played with softer mallets and they have a much longer stain and rich tone which I prefer a lot more than xylophone. Now to those people that make the synth engines, whatever marimba sound you decided to put on your nice $200 Arturia pigments software, or Logic Pro synths and what not, THAT IS NOT A MARIMBA SOUND, you have created a lower pitch xylophone sound. Please watch a video of a real marimba and make adjustments. It was acceptable with the limitations of a 1980s Casio, please stop rehashing the same ridiculous inaccurate marimba sound on every dad gum synth engine. Please and thank you

Gadget 2 uses Bluetooth connection. There is no way that is meant for rhythmic playing
Now Gadget 4 is what some real musicians have actually used and an innovative concept.

I’ve been learning chromatic harmonica for the past year. As someone coming back to music, learning this instrument has been really exciting for me. However, the more I practice and my ear improved, the more I realized how niche the instrument is. Out of any instrument, it was it’s flaws that encouraged me to learn more about music theory. My brother who is a long time trumpet player makes fun of me for not playing a real instrument, but when I ask him about topics like 12 tone equal temperament, perfect 5ths, etc. he has no idea what I’m talking about. Seeing how this man gets excited over flawed instruments really inspires me in a time when I had been feeling really down about my interests.
