The conspiracy between Pippin, Merry, Sam, and Fredegar is that they spied on Frodo and thus discovered that he had a magic ring and was planning to leave the Shire. When it was time for Frodo to say goodbye three of them said, “We’re coming with you.” The fourth stayed behind to fool people into thinking Frodo hadn’t left, which nearly proved fatal when the black riders arrived.

OK, so the conspiracy thing. I think that’s in reference to a chapter in the book called “A Conspiracy Unmasked”, which the movies cut out. What happened is that, at the start of the journey, only Frodo and Sam were supposed to know about the Ring. But Sam told Merry and Pippin about it (and also their friend Fatty Bolger, who stayed behind in the Shire), and they made plans to go with Frodo without telling him. The word “conspiracy” is used kind of ironically, since conspiracies are generally malicious but this one was entirely for Frodo’s benefit.

The conspiracy is to figure out what Frodo’s really up to when he’s moving out of Bag-End, because he’s acting pretty sketchy and his friends notice. Fatty Bolger was also part of the conspiracy, but he wasn’t the adventuring type, so when it comes out that Frodo’s leaving the Shire, Fatty stays behind and keeps up the facade that Frodo is still there as long as he can so that Frodo and co. can get further ahead of the Ring-Wraiths. It doesn’t last very long, though. He’s eventually arrested by the ruffians who invade the Shire and abused in their little prison, so when he comes out he’s lost a ton of weight and needs a new nick-name.
I literally hear no difference between how Dominic pronounces “Mary” and “Merry.” Sorry, we Americans just don’t have the ear for that particular distinction, I guess…
That was fun 🙂 Those two still have such good chemistry after all these years.

I met Billy Boyd two or three years ago at a con, and after we took a selfie and talked a bit, he goofed around with my glasses, taking pictures with them as if they were the most hilarious thing, and just generally being an adorable human being. It was really a fun encounter and he’s really really nice to fans. Still grateful for the laughs, Billy!

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say they are the real heroes. Pippin a little more so. Certainly Frodo and Sam suffered the greatest personal toll but they just showed bravery and kept moving, the only hard decision they ever had to make was what to do with Gollum and they handled it well but not perfectly. Pippin however makes incredibly impactful and incredibly brave decisions that are completely necessary to win the war. He’s probably the character who’s agency determined the most any other character in his shoes likely would have failed. He also got lucky a bunch of times in ways that helped them in the end (even getting Gandalf killed so he could be resurrected). But I’d also say he came the farthest in growing as a character out of all the fellowship. Merry also acting with the witch king is similar but it’s more of a similar moment while Pippin really makes a ton of important decisions and observations.

I met Billy Boyd at Trent University in Ontario Canada roundabouts 2012 – the crowd was a little small because there was a massive snowstorm. He did a wonderful talk with the crowd for hours, and then afterwards stayed and talked to every single person one on one after and I remember being just so enchanted by how lovely and down to earth he was.

GH used to be pronounced like F, as in touGH, rouGH, or enouGH. So Monighan should be pronounced like MoniFan.

Dominic sounds like the dude you will find drunk at a pub, smoking a pipe, and crying over football. Billy sounds like his designated driver who might also be drunk, so the bartender just calls them a taxi.

I was lucky enough to hear Billy Boyd sing with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
I’ve “met” several celebrities before, but this was the moment that really struck with me as a blur between fiction and reality.
I didn’t hear Billy Boyd sing. I heard Pippin sing. Billy Boyd just helped make that fantasy a reality.
P.S.: What’s up with Merry starting to sound like Corpse Husband? I don’t get it, and I’m not complaining, but I’d love some context.
