@penelopelopezz Yep, that’s my personal taste: I couldn’t do that complicated stuff even a second in life, and I don’t need to do that, simply because I don’t like it; the original version is still much better to me, btw ❤️ (the original version is already complicated, but I like it much much much more than this one 😌)

Choir sounded really good but the soloists have been given the impression those STUPID vocal runs at the end of almost every phrase is impressive. It’s not. Not only that, there were WAY too many and got old about 30seconds in.

I’m glad I’m not the only one. Exactly what I wanted to say. Good choir, interesting arrangement, but the “vocal masturbation” of the soloists made it impossible for me to listen to, had to skip forwards through most of it. I guess there is some skill to that kind of singing, but not art. Taken to this kind of extreme it doesn’t add anything to the music, it takes away from it. It’s the same problem that certain guitar soloists have.

The era when vocal runs, became a testament that singers could sing was ruining the music. It’s annoying to listen to. You see musicians have this preference too becouse they want to make things incredibly complicated, so they build out a cord into massive amount of notes in between. It’s making music overly complicated and mostly other musicians love to listen to this, but just a normal music enjoyer, cannot enjoy the music. I love Jacob Collier in much of his music, but if this was his arrangement and he let her do theese constant vocal runs, then he didn’t make an arrangement for a listening audience. The conductor needs to rethink this too.

@Patricia_H I’m not sure musicians in general tend to like this kind of singing. It seems to be particularly in R&B and related genres, and I think it got gradually worse since the 90s. Seems that to these singers, your worth is measured by how fast you can yodel up and down randomly within an otherwise beautiful melody.

@tvu@tvuser9529sicians that are highly into the science behind music and into showing off technically, tend to overcomplicate when playing a song, they add to the cords and embellish them. Instead of playing the basic cords and notes, they play way more notes and at high speed. Saying look I am so technically apt and can play fast. Jacob is also into the technicallity of music, and when you get into the deep knowledge, It is easy to loose track of what sounds good to a listener that is not listening with technical ears.
At first adding to cords will make it sound interesting, then with to much notes added it becomes overworked overcomplicated. For me singers do the same, they are so focused on what they can show off technically they forgot what makes a good dynamic song. Doing a little vocal run here and there is nice and can make a song more interesting, doing it constantly is not.
I understand some things are inspired by music styles, i am not knocking the style itself it comes from. Since the online world exploded for me this showing of thing has been going strong since the 90ties and getting worse and worse. And it just doesn’t make the music enjoyable or better.

Thoose vocal runs are really annoying. This is music for musicians. I hope one day we go beyond the constant vocal runs and embellishments while singing. It is not impressive, it doesn’t show me you can sing well, and it is exhausting to listen to.

Less random yodeling, more singing please. The choir is good, but the soloists? Even if you’re able to cram in 100 notes where the original melody has 1, doesn’t mean you should. Personal interpretation is all well and good, but it has to retain musical value, not just be a speedrunning competition.

Sometimes less is more. The choir is incredibly talented but the marathon of vocal runs is exhausting and needlessly noisy. This arrangement doesn’t honor the spirit or sentiment of the song.

The sound of this choir is fantastic. The voices are all beautiful. And nothing against the solo singers, but all those embellishments are terribly awful and so unnecessary. They are incredibly irritating and detract from a beautiful whole.

I wish that had been done without the soloist. She has a beautiful voice but she over ornamented a song that needs no ornamentation. What I really wanted to hear was the beautiful choir and innovative chords in the arrangement. But sadly they were relegated to backup for the soloist.
