Given the scale of the challenge, the conversation around climate change is often tinged with doom and gloom. But climate tech investor Gabriel Kra thinks we need to reframe the crisis as a source of tremendous opportunity. He offers five big reasons to be optimistic about climate — starting with the fact that many of the world’s best minds are focused and working on building a clean future for all.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

Have you noticed the continental fires in Australia, and the US, and even in Asia and Europe. Have you seen the news on melting ice sheets and the scarsity of water for the majority of the world. We believe in Climate Change. I believe. How do I help? Here we have too much water at times. How could I share?

Switching technologies is exactly what we have been doing for hundreds of years and it has never resulted in a healthier environment. Wake up!
“Profit = income – expenses” is a recipe for misconduct and the suicide of all mankind because everything, the entire environment, is to the right of
the minus sign; thus, on the wrong side of the equation. Technology is the indirect cause of climate change.
We need a new Global Economic Model GEM that supports a new definition of profit, and this ‘profit’ definition must map well with nature’s economy.
In nature, we have been paid in full, in advance, and our job is to gain sustenance without going into Overshoot.

I recommend this definition: Profit = our gratefulness and loving care for our Environment, and for the sustenance that it provides to all of us.
Clearly, this definition of profit does require a new GEM.

The central part of the new Global Economic Model should be the EPA. EPA members will vote on the best ‘Profit’ definition that states sustenance
is our only actual ‘gain’ without which we can’t live, and states that the environment is our only source of sustenance.

As the central hub of the new GEM, EPA members will establish, by vote, all directives related to both, the GEM and climate rescue strategies.
Here are just some rough ideas of what the EPA directives might be:
1.) Population: Initially we need a one child per family directive.
2.) In place of income, jobs would have an ‘equivalency rating’. Some jobs are still more important and more difficult than others.
3.) All equivalency ratings will increase at the same time if and when the environment becomes healthier. The lowest EquivRate must still be livable.
4.) Everyone who can work will be able, and required, to get jobs. No more expenses, so no more cutting jobs to reduce expenses; thus, virtually no more homelessness.
5.) No manufacturing of useless and unnecessary products. All products will be scrutinized by various rating methods.
6.) Whenever possible products should last a lifetime and or be easily upgradable, so we don’t buy the same products repeatedly.
7.) EPA will direct “Work Force Flow”. Example: Shoe manufacturer will produce 100yearLife shoes for 3 years, then reduce output to about 1/10 of full capacity, and
the majority of shoe employees will be shifted to other work assignments by the EPA. Employees still keep their EquivRate in-between jobs.
I know that this is just a rough outline of what we must do, but it’s a good starting point.

This is our Ark. Please help build it! Questions, suggestions and any comments for or against this idea will be very deeply appreciated. Thank you!

The glory of humans has been the devastation of the Earth. The only narrative that matters at this late stage if the game is “We belong to the Earth, the Earth does NOT belong to us”… the antithesis of capitalism ❤️‍????????????

I wouldn’t agree less but a times we are influenced based on result of what will see and experience, failure at first try doesn’t mean it is over but unfortunately people seems to back off when they have experiences some obstacle or failure along the way

Yes, ecological modernization might lessen the problem, but the problem is embedded in capitalism, without which we can not produce new (eco) technologies. A lot more needs to change. We can not produce ecology; we need to preserve it. Degrowth is unimaginable but also inevitable.

Lithium ion batteries are already 96 percent recycleable. Solar panels can also be recycled.

  23. Charlotte Scott

    May 18, 2022 at 7:30 pm

Some very good points but what about the shortage of minerals to make batteries etc. We need a solution to that before batteries can become a bigger part of the solution. We cannot strip everything out of the earth. We also need to get rich people and politicians out of this. We have known since the early 80’s (if not before) that wave, wind and solar power could be cheaper that fossil fuel driven power. But politicians blocked the research and poured money into fossil fuels to increase their personal wealth and help out their rich mates!

If I could like this twice I would. Very refreshing to see people in power actually taking this seriously for a change. With the previous administration at the helm it seemed like a wise investment might be a doomsday bunker but now I am investing in 30 solar panels for my house. I loved how they mentioned carbon capture, and I personally would throw in nuclear as I think both of those will play a part if implemented correctly.

I feel like I’ve heard this optimism before. I didn’t hear anything about how we are going to feed everyone without wiping out land based ecosystems. Burning down the Amazon is still more profitable than vertical farming. Technology that increases humans’ negative influence like automation also gets developed. This doesn’t really help people who know you can’t buy your way out of environmental destruction and that one person can counter multiple people’s efforts to reduce their consumption. Does anyone have any projections of decreases in land use? The best news is the development of milk that was made by microorganisms fermentation and lab grown meat which I think has potential. Other than that, it looks like not buying things is the only solution that barely anyone wants to admit and doesn’t seem likely.

This week’s guest is Ayal Yogev, co-founder and CEO of Anjuna Security, who has experienced both sides of the startup journey: scaling quickly during the boom years and then making the incredibly difficult decision to lay off a significant portion of his team when the market shifted.

From growing to 75 employees to scaling back and rebuilding, Yogev learned firsthand that the hardest part of leadership isn’t hiring fast, it’s making tough decisions with care, transparency, and integrity.

In this episode, Isabelle Johannessen and Yogev unpack what it really means to lead through layoffs with compassion and how founders can support their teams even in the most challenging moments. They also explore the lessons learned from scaling too quickly and how to build a more resilient company the second time around.
