pretty much its just a gemini LLM that apple has paid google for and integrated it into their own services so it is in fact just Gemini and the private compute stuff is your data going to a google server thats restricted and encrypted in some form to prevent access to the data
@Digital-_-Spirit
June 11, 2026 at 6:55 pm
So in software engineering terms, Apple used the Google Gemini “framework” to build the new Siri?
If this analogy is accurate, then Google Gemini is functioning similarly to how the .net framework functions in Windows apps 🤔

I’ve been using Gemini some because I can tell it to read the page without taking a screenshot and then running it through another app so they can read it to me so it has been more convenient for my dyslexia but I had another way it just took more steps and lots and lots of screenshots but yesterday my Gemini wasn’t working for some reason and I had to Google it and apparently the error code was common so back to the old way I’m annoyed

So, what exactly is Google Gemini contributing to Apple’s AI ecosystem and Siri experience? If you’re wondering why the partnership matters, try comparing today’s AI-enhanced Siri with the older version. The difference becomes much clearer. Google Gemini brings more advanced language understanding, better reasoning, and the ability to handle complex requests more naturally than traditional voice assistants. These improvements help Siri provide more useful, conversational, and context-aware responses. Whether directly or indirectly, the integration of advanced AI models raises the overall quality of the user experience. If you don’t appreciate the value Gemini brings, go back and use the old Siri for a while—you’ll quickly notice the limitations that users had to deal with before the recent advancements in AI.

✔ Google supports Apple developers by integrating Gemini into Xcode and Apple’s Foundation Models framework
@devConstructor
June 12, 2026 at 2:48 pm
Bridget is like 👿👿 “got ya you android users”.
Reality is Apple is probably licensing a customized version of Gemini. They are probably licensing their cloud services too. And no Apple doesn’t have data centers and labs to maintain their own model because it doesn’t EXIST you sheeples@ 🤭
Gemini:
“Apple completely shook things up at WWDC last week, officially rebuilding their assistant from the ground up and renaming it **Siri AI**.
The short answer is that it runs on a heavily customized hybrid system. While it isn’t just a basic copy-paste of Google’s consumer app, it is fundamentally powered by **Google’s Gemini family of models** through a massive multi-year partnership between Apple and Google (reported to be worth around $1 billion a year).
Here is exactly how the underlying AI architecture breaks down:
### The Core Engine: Apple Foundation Models (AFM)
Apple introduced a brand-new internal family of models called **Apple Foundation Models (AFM)**, which were co-developed with Google. A system orchestrator dynamically decides which model to use depending on what you ask:
* **AFM Core & Core Advanced (On-Device):** These handle smaller, faster requests right on your phone or Mac. They take care of local context parsing, onscreen awareness, fast dictation, and the new expressive voice pacing.
* **AFM Cloud & Cloud Pro (Server-Side):** For complex agentic tasks, advanced reasoning, and deep workflows, Siri routes requests to these heavyweight cloud models.
### Where Google Gemini Comes In
Siri AI is not just bouncing your text to standard Google servers; it uses Apple’s own deployment frameworks. However, Google’s DNA is all over it:
* **Co-Development & Training:** The AFM models were built alongside Google DeepMind, drawing heavily from the Gemini model ecosystem. Apple’s VP of AI Engineering (who happens to be a former Google Gemini lead) noted that Siri AI was trained using reinforcement learning refined by Gemini’s most advanced outputs.
* **Infrastructure:** To run the top-tier *AFM Cloud Pro* model, Apple is actually utilizing Nvidia GPUs housed inside Google’s cloud servers.
> **The Privacy Catch:** Because privacy is Apple’s whole brand, they built a strict scaffolding around this Google partnership. Before a complex query ever leaves your device to hit those Gemini-backed cloud servers, Apple’s **Private Cloud Compute (PCC)** infrastructure strips away all personally identifiable information. Google is contractually barred from retaining any of your query data or using it to train future models.
>
Essentially, Apple built the car and controls the steering wheel, but Google Gemini is providing the engine under the hood for the heavy lifting.”
@alexalexander1984
June 12, 2026 at 3:02 pm
In short, it is a multi-billion-dollar partnership where Google provides the foundational AI science, search knowledge, and cloud muscle, while Apple maintains total control over the user interface, app integration, and strict data privacy.

It’s like purchasing an Aston Martin sports car. It’s luxurious, refined, beautiful and sporty. But the real powerhouse of it, lies in the Mercedes AMG engine. That’s what makes the entire Aston Martin work so beautifully. Aston Martin didn’t want to reinvent a V8 engine. They just used an already legendary engine instead. It saved them time, money and engineering resources to make the whole of the car, a feat of engineering. There’s no shame in what Apple is doing. Just be honest and truthful. We’re not stupid.

From Apple’s website: “we are collaborating with Google and NVIDIA to run new Apple Intelligence workloads on Google Cloud.” So more demanding cloud -based AI queries now run on Google Cloud servers, while less demanding ones use on device processing. It’s not using Gemini but some Siri queries will use Google servers.

Foundation models don’t cost a lot or independent or university based models wouldn’t be possible, eg.
Broad world knowledge also isn’t that expensive to get especially given Apple’s resources.
Gemini is only used to compare the competency of Siri-AI. It’s like 2 athletes compete with each other in mock competitions after training to improve better.
No wonder Google only charges Apple a small amount to use Datacentre infrastructure (building and hardware) for Apple to use.
Because Gemini Cloud based approach is very costly. Apple Siri is less expensive and Google has not much leverage when Apple has the model and the Broadworld knowledge database to use itself.
On- device first makes sense. The entire processing power of devices must be larger than that of Datacentre world. So waste it?
This is on top of the privacy issue.
Over time the compute power of devices will only get much larger at not much higher cost. Privacy hence will be why not on device as well when it’s obvious.
Let the datacentre players burn their cash and worsens their balance sheet. Recent capital raising via share issue by Datacentre players likely because their bankers are forcing them or OTHERWISE. Minimum income never covers mega spend.

My understanding is GEMINI is developed by the same model Apple created Siri AI from. It’s a fork from the original model. Gemini isn’t a parent, it’s more of a sibling. Apple and Gemini used the same Google foundational model. Very similar to what Apple did with ARM and the M series divergence.
