As a dentist, I appreciate this. However, I think insurance companies will eventually only pay for services done by a robot. Insurance companies already dictate treatment, so I don’t see that changing 😕

I’m a dentist and I’ve expected something like this for a long time. The truth is, something like this has the potential to do a crown in less time and with greater precision than a person, but would need to be overseen by a dentist. Obviously, there would need to be A LOT of safety data behind it before it could ever go mainstream, and there would need to be a kill switch under the patient’s control.
I have essential tremor, and I am not able to do crowns on molars anymore. I refer those to another dentist I practice with. This machine might allow me to offer those crowns to patients again.

That’s so nice that you want to do that for your patients again 🙂 honest question though, wouldn’t using a machine to do it be kind of like allowing another dentist to do it? Or is it about retaining the business? Just curious.

Yeah i am a dentist too and i would prefer the machine is doing this work for me ,,, so patient can discuss with the machine if he does not want to cooperate …. Hahaha

There is still a lot more involved than just the part the machine does. I would provide anesthesia, remove any decay (at this point, a robot wouldn’t be able to do that reliably) place a filling to build up the part where there was decay, design the crown, monitor the machine, and then make a temporary crown for the patient. So no, the machine doesn’t do it all, it’s just a tool a dentist can use.

If the patient is asleep, this can work. There’s a lot of heightened emotion going to the dentist already so this is a hard sell for patients.
