It’s a tool. You still have to learn how to use the tool correctly. I’m in college taking computer science. It’s certainly helped. But at the same time, it can also hinder learning if you just want to turn the assignments in without learning the material. You have to want to learn to actually learn it now.

The point is you may not have to u learn anything anymore. You just have to think. AI takes care of the rest. From Syntax, to documentation, you cannot compete with AI. With it as your tool, there is no need to learn it or to even understand. Your end goal is not to learn about the tools you are using, but rather, it’s to solve a problem. The tools you know may be the wrong tools. AI is like a new set of applicale tools for every new task you want to accomplish. The tools change to your needs without you asking for it.

Therefore, we still need to know how to use these tools. It doesn’t just make you capable of making any app/game: and if you think so, then why don’t you just try to do it! There are lots of delusional people who think that a blind code generator will make you a software engineer. Having a stetoscope does not make you a doctor, but people believing that a stetoscope makes you a doctor can destroy the trust in the whole health industry. Believing that code generator toy program can write actual code can destroy the whole economy.
Being a doctor or being an engineer is a whole life project, a generator algorithm won’t be able to replace it.

As a creative nerd without the logical brain of a coder, this kind of thing really makes me happy. I definitely plan to start creating software if it becomes this easy.
That said, flip this to the other side of the brain—I would assume coders love that they can generate art and images using prompting without an artistic side.

I want to create a Garmin “Widget”. A Garmin widget is a 3rd party app available in their Garmin Connect IQ store, but I don’t know how to code. Anyone has always been able to code if they learn to do it.
Code generation still needs monitoring of humans who knows how to code since you have to make sure that AI-generated code does exactly its job according to its context also because there’s always some probability of error from the generated code.

natural language is not a good programming language. 93% of problems would be a terrible professional colleague. calling this programming is like calling making a Wix site, or editing a configuration programming. instead of learning clear logic, non-programmes are going to manage a bunch of NLMs that don’t understand logic… not a promotion

why this is not true, that human language is mapped to the language of the machine is that the machine only understands logic about numerical data and the LLM doesn’t understand logic in any sense, it only generates likely strings of tokens, many of which are not logical, and when they are logical, only because the logical string of tokens happened to be the likely one in that case.

Highly doubt it that the “nerds” are on github.
They changed to gitlab since github is now owned by Microsoft and it is not certain who owns the code.
AI needs to learn. Pretty sure that the AI/Copilot learns from the code from github users.
So there are those who can code and those that need ChatGPT.

AI + non engineers will be a huge problem now. When you think that you are killing it, you will put yourself on a larger hole, and probably will be to late to revert what did.

Nowadays, TED only sells anxiety to people with low self-esteem and intelligence. Then the rest of the guys can sell classes according to these anxieties. Bunch of bullshit. He starts by writing a comment. How are you supposed to know how to do that without coding knowledge?
The comment somehow already gets completed with a suggestion to draw lego bricks. Either copilot can read its CEO’s mind, or they have set up a very specific demo. Fair enough if they did, but don’t sell that as more than it is.
The first piece of code it generates does not draw a lego brick. It draws a simple rectangle. Which you can see if you can read and understand code. (Or spot the comment it generated which also tells you “create a rectangle”!) So again, relying on copilot to create code without understanding code, it’s already disproven here.
Similarly, the code generated while “chatting” with copilot does not render a lego brick either. It renders a box. I guess that’s close enough to a lego brick. But it certainly looks nothing like the actually rendered lego brick he shows at the end of his demo, which somehow has studs and anti-studs. I would love to see “all the steps he did *as a developer*” to get there.
Finally, he asks copilot what the code on the left does, and to explain it to him in German. It then tells him in a lot of detail that it draws a rectangle. No mention of a lego brick here either.
Well, this all feels very deceitful to me.

We had years to develop an interface between machine language and the human. But there are gate keepers, special interests, sticks in the mud and job security concerns. Now we have a statistical guessing system being pushed on us as a massive kludge instead of starting over with a refined Assembly Language to Human programing system. Code is cryptic because in the begining memory was very scarce. So was computation. We need tools for logical flow charting, not statistical guessing and halucination.

The speaker is wrong at 2:30 about in 80 years “we got nowhere near the intuitiveness of human language”. He’s wrong likely due to his limted knowledge of programming languages such as LiveCode (base on Hypercard’s Hyperscript), and Applescript, which have been around for many years. LiveCode runs on Mac, PC, Linux. Sadly, he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know when it comes to programming languages. Very likely the same applies to you.

I disabled the copilot ghost text the other week. It gets in my way more often than it helps me. It makes you feel like the cleanup crew and as with many ai things, it takes away the sense of accomplishment. It makes work less enjoyable

Most of the comments are doubting that anyone can be a coder with AI. I’m doubting however that we will need software developers in the future, it’s just a matter of training these AI models on larger scales. It won’t be a co-pilot, it will be the pilot.

I have tried coding with LLM’s. Nearly every time there were several bugs, and sometimes the “fixed” programs would run but with subtle bugs that you would not notice immediately but came back to bite you much later.

So Copilot writes the code, but if the person doesn’t actually understand how to program, then they will not know if the code written will actually work as intended. It may work 90% of the time, but when it fails in that 10%, let’s just hope it isn’t the software being used in your hospital’s ICU systems.

Oh please! When I first tried copilot, it was SO much worse than Chat GPT!
When he said that he’s a CEO, I was ready for a lot of nonsense and it took him just about 3 minutes to get there.
Guys like him are the reason software is as buggy as it is today. And why I’m currently taking off a year from software engineering because I was so fed up with the growing incompetence in the industry.

For me it’s very true. I only learned programming as a curiosity but got a psychology degree and now work in archiving and digitalization. But copilot already helped me write 3 very useful apps for my company which saved a lot of money and got me a raise.

“coded” a python script with gpt4o yesterday to sift through 286pages of text and extract all the names from the document. it did it flawlessly. if you can just tell the machine what to do and circumvent the code, it’s actually pretty magical. not saying that it’s perfect but it works. 2 years down the line…

AI definitely lowers the barrier of entry for coding,
It highly augments people who think systematically and who have a great intuition for how to build software and who don’t know the syntax or language by heart.
But we’re fundamentally far off from leaving a full on project to LLMs with no human input for supervision, direction and conceptual planning.
The level of abstraction will get ever higher as systems get more complex.
So anyone can dictate an idea for an small or medium size app, but not anyone will have sufficient background coding knowledge and understanding to adjust it when it doesn’t work in one shot and to know how to improve it when the AI system can’t predict a different more creative approach.

Human language isn’t precise enough of a language for specifying computer systems and programs. If you don’t understand why and you trust these AI systems to write code for you then you’re going to have a fun time in a few years when you don’t understand why your software systems isn’t doing what you think it ought to be doing. And the AI assistant can’t tell you either.

Pretty much anyone can learn to code anyway… writing the code is really the easy part. Solving problems with technology is the real problem that people struggle with, and no, AI cannot solve that.

Programming is a powerful skill that is capable of changing how things work at a fundamental level.
The problem with anyone being able to code, is that this skill is adopted without the years of ethics awareness that comes with a classic route through becoming a programmer.
The only difference between a programmer and a hacker, are those ethics.

Developers are the largest group with normalcy bias.
This topic is highly triggering to them.
But they will be replaced over the next 5 years.
AGI level autonomous software will see to that.

While it’s true LLMs can’t code at a level of a proficient software engineer with extensive experience in low level programming for example, just wait a year or two and I can guarantee you it would be better than them.
