Who cares? If there’s a gunshot in a densely populated area, then police need to check the location. This is common sense! This has absolutely nothing to do with racism or socioeconomic status.

  8. @SIMONK479

    December 19, 2024 at 6:19 pm

Communities of colour. Colour doesn’t matter at alll. If an area has lots of crime police need to stop it. If there was a neighbourhood where everyone was orange but crime was high then it’s not racial it’s just a fact

Maybe areas with people of color have more gun incidents?? Now they want you to shut it down because they don’t want to get caught.

  15. @unitedhybrid187

    December 19, 2024 at 7:08 pm

Not all of them are shown. They have them in Columbus, GA too. I’ve seen them around the “bad” neighborhoods.

Dear YouTube, can we have a feature to block commenting until the video was watched in full ?
    Would be really useful sometime.
(This applies to everybody, not just the other mean and dumb side.)

  18. @deadwright534

    December 19, 2024 at 7:16 pm

This is just more evidence that darker neighborhoods have more crime, we don’t need a AI computer to tell us that, look into the prison system tells you all you need to know

  19. @Luzgar

    December 19, 2024 at 7:19 pm

All the installation, processing and decision-making is done by a private company?

Just selling hardware is no longer profitable enough.

  20. @RikodiusRex

    December 19, 2024 at 7:20 pm

Would it be funny if you went up with like a speaker and played gunshots and then started recording like “are you alone alone in the house?”
“I want to know who I’m looking at ”
    “What’s your favorite scary movie?”

  21. @deadwright534

    December 19, 2024 at 7:24 pm

One more reason to keep gun suppressors out of the people’s hands, if it works i don’t see a problem, if it doesn’t well waist of money

  22. @Luzgar

    December 19, 2024 at 7:30 pm

So this is both outstanding journalism and a misleading waste of time. That does not add up.

  26. @mattiasthorslund6467

    December 20, 2024 at 3:48 am

Seems to me the actual problem is police. Detecting gun shots seems like a good thing when it helps police respond quicker to an ongoing situation. But when there’s no ongoing incident, the police should not be allowed to use the report as an excuse to go fishing.

  27. @kingnateoh

    December 20, 2024 at 4:08 am

You guys keep talking about crypto, but is it worth the risk? I decided to put $100 into Elizzarda, a legit company, and now I’m pulling 0.5% every day. Way more stable and predictable

As Don Beck, author of Spiral Dynamics Integral, put it eloquently, it is not about color of skin, but about color of value system. Developmental psychology provides great insights into this.

A system that is helping save minority lives is bad cos some of the sensors are broken? What kind of logic is that?

  35. @shaneintegra

    December 20, 2024 at 7:33 am

you should go to those areas and spend the night in tents and hang out with the local night life there. would be cool to see you guys out there showing everyone why they dont need those sensors

This piece would have been more interesting if they could have obtained and shared data on successful arrests/prosecutions….. not on the poor Quality assurance processes. Did the tech provider tell the various municipalities they have OOS equipment that needed a tech to repair? Or was it the providers fault somehow? Lots more questions than answers.

  41. @daledevernon56

    December 20, 2024 at 11:57 am

Seems like a pretty good idea and the reality is that poorer Communities have more crime, so what’s the issue..

  42. @scottieapplseed

    December 20, 2024 at 1:22 pm

Great idea if it was evenly distributed, and then the data collected was fed back into itself to constantly refine and take the noise out so instead of solving one specific problem, it helps with all problems related to this issue by providing actual data to combat biases.

The reason why these sensors are located in communities of color is because that’s where a lot of crime gets committed.

  54. @RIGeek.

    December 21, 2024 at 11:09 am

This is one of those ‘chicken or egg’ paradoxes. What came first, the over-policing and microphones or the statistics of crime and shootings showed the need? With the implementation of these systems you do have to accept that the statistics post-implementation would show an increase in those crimes due to the automatic reporting of the incidents. No longer relying on nearby people and/or a patrolling officer to put in a report. I think these systems should be in all cities, no matter the color or creed.

  60. @MikeRLloyd73

    December 21, 2024 at 2:11 pm

You’d think rich people would want it in their neighborhood

  61. @jacobKC3MRA

    December 21, 2024 at 2:18 pm

Yeah that’s not a secret at all. Everyone here knows about them. Maybe it’s different other places.

  62. @shazzb1170

    December 21, 2024 at 2:20 pm

It’s a chicken and an egg. What came first, the sensors or the communities? They said in the article, Police provide statistics for the crime, which is false. Any crime statistic is based on what is reported. Not the actual number of crimes that occur. They use data to determine the location or if they are in high-risk areas such as hospitals and government departments. Call me crazy, but if I was there and was shot, I’d be more than happy to be laying on the ground bleeding, knowing that EMS was on its way because the sensor detected the shots. Time is critical for saving lives. I hope someone heard the gunshot and called 911 to have a sensor that is audited and working and calls 911 every time. I know which one I prefer if I or my loved ones are injured and waiting for help. Sorry but this is actually about saving lives and not about privacy. If a person is that worried about their privacy then don’t use any technology.

  63. @KeithCooper-Albuquerque

    Outstanding reporting!

  64. @am74343

    December 21, 2024 at 3:16 pm

Statistically, more guns are shot in… low-income areas. Statistically, more guns are shot in… areas where there are more crimes, more drugs, and violence. None of this should be a surprise. So why would it be surprising, then, to place these microphones directly in those areas?

  65. @207522

    December 21, 2024 at 3:45 pm

    5:26 That’s not “20/22” that’s 2022. Wtf?

    • @Grassgrassgras

      December 21, 2024 at 6:31 pm

      yeah ?

  66. @ardentvibe6917

    December 21, 2024 at 3:48 pm

Critics of this program want one simple thing; as slow as possible EMS/Police response times in black communities. The placement of these devices is indifferent to the color of the skin of the population, and solely based on where the most violent crime happens. To raise a racial stance on this topic is a form of racism, – as in doing so you are clearly inadvertently admitting that black people are more violent than white people, and that they don’t deserve to have the police stop active shooters in their communities.

That, or maybe the people raising the racial issue are the ones committing these violent crimes.

  67. @jaxamilius5237

    December 21, 2024 at 3:54 pm

i do not understand why this is an issue? you said in the beginning that police would hand all the data where shots were fired and the company goes and put up the devices. what is the problem? if these areas happen to be with a lot of minorities then is that not a good thing? i am also a person of colour and i would welcome this in my neighborhood! as long as all the devices are functioning properly ofcourse

    • @Grassgrassgras

      December 21, 2024 at 6:31 pm

fr i’m not black but i’ve had a lot of people i was mates with get stabbed to death (in england) and i don’t understand why anyone would be against monitoring… we ain’t trynna let anyone get away with murdering people

I understand things like shot spotter being put on buildings like the FBI buildings, and capital buildings.

  71. @heyman23233

    December 21, 2024 at 6:59 pm

Shot spotter needed to be implemented before the pre-COVID madness! It does its job very well. If you don’t like this sensors in these locations, move to a third world country where you will live a reckless & lawless life.

  72. @primate3609

    December 21, 2024 at 7:01 pm

Oooohh cartel politicians don’t want shot sensors on their crib, and they are using the legit privacy concerns of misinformed community members to rally againts them, what a surprise!! Then you got greedy contractors paywalling maintenance and inflating cheap equipment, incompetent bureaucrats who know sh*t about anything taking advantage of the racism wave…. if anything they can help low income people to stop killing each other

  73. @chikendeepfry666

    December 21, 2024 at 7:25 pm

If this dude is saying that they install them based off data, then he just proved low income areas ate the places that need it most 🤷🏿‍♂️

  74. @vinchetti_spaghetti

  75. @Chopwoodcarrywater

    December 21, 2024 at 8:01 pm

That was good reporting up until y’all played the race card. It’s widely understood blacks are more violent that others. Therefore, it only makes sense to target black areas for gunshot detectors. Hey, a few innocent folks might caught up in the mix but that’s the price for a free society. That’s right. The rule of law is the most important ingredient of the prosperous world in which we live.

  76. @ash-yr5xt

It’s not so secret. The cops in my town aren’t screwing around with BS that doesn’t matter. There’s too much going on for them to pick up people at random.

  78. @Hiboyboy123

    December 22, 2024 at 9:51 am

  91. @Juicefpv

    December 22, 2024 at 5:21 pm

Maybe the communities complaining about this tech clean up their own areas. They are only putting up systems like this because of gun crime, is is not causing the gun crime.

  92. @murdockscott

    December 22, 2024 at 6:41 pm

I wish there was a fair solution. I can see how this tech can be misused but I am so very tired of random gunfire in my neighborhood. Every time it happens, my family freezes in place hoping a stray bullet won’t hit one of us. We call the police fully understanding that it’s likely to do nothing. Reasonable gun regulation should be the starting point, but gun lobbies in America have convinced so many people that even the slightest change is unacceptable. It feels like tech COULD help if it was used fairly and with serious limitations… but again, people will always find a way to use it in a corrupt way to bolster their own agendas. It is seriously disappointing.

  93. @RancheroFiveO

    December 22, 2024 at 7:04 pm

Terribly one sided article. I would suggest that a better version would include the examples of when the system worked and the actual success to failure ratio. You didn’t even expand on your vague mention of where the system is used in Africa. Very disappointing.

  94. @lloydlego6088

    December 22, 2024 at 7:11 pm

This is like arguing against beating children. We have mics that pick up the distressed cries of children. And people are arguing that a racial group that historically abuses children is being targeted, when they are just putting the mics where children are more likely to be harmed. Yeah we don’t want you to know when our criminals are shooting each other.

These devices detect gun shots. Even if you distributed them equally, the detections only occur where gun shots occur.
Who would complain about this? Do you want us to take them out and replace them with officers instead?

So poor areas are mad that police show up for shootings?? I mean the FBI stats show that a certain demographic has 1/6 the gun ownership, but many times higher gun deaths than the group that has the most guns. I say the police should go on strike for a month and let things fall apart.

  104. @Oligophreniac

    December 23, 2024 at 1:43 am

If they can get the tech to accurately discriminate between gunshots and other sounds, being able to locate gunshots quickly would obviously be good.

  107. @STARSIXTYNINE

    December 23, 2024 at 9:15 am

Theyre probably picking up these wanna be race car drivers, smashing in the busy cities on slow speed streets. Dodge chargers and challangers stock annoyingly loud cars for no reason.

  108. @phipsy6941

    December 23, 2024 at 9:36 am

This is a good thing. All these people protesting it are black and its just statistics that there is more violence among blacks and hispanics.

  109. @RespectfullyCurious

    December 23, 2024 at 11:56 am

The video makes a number of statements that convolute the argument. Each point on its own has merits and resolutions that most people can agree on. Throwing them all together to distort the objective reality just leads to more pointing of fingers than valuable and positive discourse.

  110. @teeconsigliano7631

    December 23, 2024 at 12:27 pm

Enough race baiting and phony class consciousness. In Oakland, we’re not worried about shotspotters, we’re worried about getting shot. It would be a lot more helpful to research the political connections that support criminals in US cities than this woke BS.

  111. @ZacchaeusNifong

    December 23, 2024 at 12:48 pm

So more crime occurs in POC neighborhoods. Yet they made this into a racial thing. I don’t get it.

  112. @JakeSDN

    December 23, 2024 at 1:23 pm

Your map is missing a lot of sensors, and I have seen Shot Spotter save lives, when someone was shot and no one reported it. Gun violence does not tend to happen in rich areas, the areas Shot Spotter is in are usually not considered the best areas of those cities. Shot Spotter did not make them that way.

  116. @amber7591

    December 23, 2024 at 4:13 pm

What about all the license plate cameras they put everywhere now

  117. @OpenRoader

    December 23, 2024 at 4:38 pm

These microphones triangulate the location where gun shots happen in real time allowing for a faster police deployment with the goal of catching the people discharging these weapons. Naturally they will be deployed to locations where gun shots happen more frequently. How the police use that information could be suspect depending on who is running the department and what their motives are. But, if the neighborhoods that are experiencing high levels of gun discharging are being monitored more than other neighborhoods, that’s not a failure of the monitoring system, that’s a failure of the people living in those neighborhoods.

  118. @rzvrzv9894

    December 23, 2024 at 6:22 pm

Why are all of these devices in black neighborhoods? Probably because blacks represent 13% of the US population but are responsible for 60% of the crime. It’s amazing how many things make sense if you start using your brain. You guys should try it.

  119. @danndank

      December 26, 2024 at 12:12 am

If it can pick up sounds, sure it will be used for surveillance. All countries spy on their citizens especially large ones. China does it publicly that’s why there’s so much noise about it. While other countries do it covertly. But everyone does.

in germany theres similar new boxes ontop of lamps etc as well and they werent there anytime before, people will instantly say yahh conspiracyidiot like always, but if its a microphone its a microphone, not just for gunshots, something like that doesnt exist xD why people believe they cant be listened too whenever they want is top tier copium addiction xd and i bet theres alot more hidden all across haha once they start feeling comftable doing it they go all in , observable since ever and everywhere anywhere

  125. @stevecagle2317

    December 24, 2024 at 2:01 pm

Your correlation of mics to race is likely flawed. I believe data will show that Shotspotter places their mics using data on actual gun crime locations and not because they’re targeting minorities. It is likely as it is in my city, that a very large percentage of gun crimes occur in places with concentrations of minorities.
You call out “over policing” yet in my city of Indianapolis, when gun crimes occur and media interview locals, community activists, concerned clergy, among the things they plead for is that people put the guns down and settle their differences without violence and another is MORE police presence not less as you suggest.
The bias of this report is pretty transparent. Shotspotter’s service may not be worth it because of inop sensors, errors in IDing suspected gunshots locations, or slow notifications to police, but I’m skeptical the service is targeting minorities directly.

  126. @evanelledev7237

    December 24, 2024 at 2:25 pm

I see no issue with this system. They are placed in areas known to have gun violence. Its not like it selectively listens to who fires the guns. It’s based on statistics.

  127. @IanNachtigall

    December 24, 2024 at 6:55 pm

Wanna drive those mics wild? Get a metal sports whistle with a cork ball and go to town. It is what they use to calibrate those mics.

  128. @hgfhfghfghfg755

Please don’t cut out the part of the article because you don’t like it. These reports should be compared to other areas. If they hear it in black communities are you suggesting they should forget it? I don’t care for state surveillance…this is the minimum of what Edward Snowden reported.

It’s another Grift, just like those security devices at the air-ports and the bomb “detectors” that were sold to the Army.

  151. @Muench13

    December 27, 2024 at 10:28 am

Your headline makes it sound like we are living in 1984, with secret police listening in to private conversations through hidden microphones.

In reality these microphones are used to triangulate gunshots, enabling first responders to react more quickly, instead of having to wait for some to MAYBE call 911.

I subscribed because I liked your interviews, but I’m unsubscribing because of stuff like this. Hopefully others follow. Let’s see what that does to your engagement numbers.

  157. @jerseyjoyride1316

    December 27, 2024 at 7:26 pm

My breakdown of this is that these are mostly found in neighborhoods with a high concentration of African-American and Hispanic citizens.
But that is because that’s where most of the gun violence is happening which makes sense for product placement.
However it does not sound like these are a reliable source for sending officers out, as they are too unreliable in both detecting the gunshots and actually discerning which ones are gunshots.
Seems like this is a multi-million dollar contract that’s wasting our taxpayer dollars.
Maybe a good concept but not something that we can actually rely on now.

Did you ever think about the fact that POC commit more gun crimes than whites? Meaning, a higher need for these devices. Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for cutting Government spending. So, if citizens of a place don’t want a device that assists police in protecting them, in their neighborhood, then don’t spend the money. Let them police themselves.
