How is the US going to reach net zero by 2050? That’s the question Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, director of the Office of Science for the US Department of Energy, is urgently trying to answer. She shares the thinking behind what her team is calling “Energy Earthshots” — projects designed to accelerate innovation in the fight against climate change, from nature-based solutions in the soil to the creation of brand-new technologies – and calls for innovative, equitable policies backed by science.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

The beauty of politically fabricated crisis like global warming is that you can justify all sorts of actions knowing that you can claim victory later when none of your scaremongering claims comes true … since they were never going to happen anyway. If we do nothing, the global climate will be just fine in 50 years just as it will be just fine if we waste trillions on “green” technologies and enrich the Al Gore’s of the world.

If 80% of energy is from fossil fuels, shouldn’t the aim be to replace all of that with green energy. Once that is achieved, then the extra energy can be used for carbon capture.. else it will be just green washing

Couldn’t you have done this talk without mentioning politicians? Once a politician is named, a segment of the population goes crazy and can no longer process logic for 15 minutes.

maybe it goes beyond that, these people are global slavers, 3:06 Are they asking for 100$ per ton/// which equates to nearly 15k in the us per person depending on wind. Is this right? also they do this with absolutely zero ground to stand on, infact every nut case who has come out to make some exaggerated claim has also been debunked over time.

@TheMercilessEye Sure, messing with the chemicals of Earth’s atmosphere might change the climate overtime in a way but at the time that Earth is completely unhabitable we and our childrens children will be long gone.

@TheSecretCouncil Life will adapt. As it always has, through multiple mass-extinction events. Whether or not humanity will remain at the apex of the food chain…let alone exist anymore…is a more open question.

No, we don’t. By the end of this millennium, there won’t be any human on earth. Climate change is inevitable. The earth will burn like the sun by the end of this millennium, and we can’t do anything about it. Just tell the truth, but you don’t know it.

Was hopeful for presentation of at least a sliver of real solutions and discussion on real action taking place only to find another six minutes of a washed federal official saying pretty much nothing except “we’re innovating with cutting edge innovations” while the EPA allows these increasingly monstrous trucks and SUVs to be produced and look the other way while fossil fuel extractors and ag conglomerates decimate our atmosphere and planet.

The scientific consensus on anthropogenic (human-caused) climate change is based on extensive research and evidence. Here are some key points that support this conclusion:

Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) and deforestation, have significantly increased the concentration of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2).

Rising Temperatures: Global average temperatures have been consistently rising over the past century. This is confirmed by temperature records, satellite data, and extensive climate modeling. This warming is consistent with the expected effects of increased greenhouse gas concentrations.

Sea Level Rise: The melting of glaciers and the thermal expansion of seawater due to higher temperatures have led to rising sea levels. This is a direct consequence of global warming.

Ocean Acidification: Increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere lead to the absorption of more CO2 by the oceans, causing ocean acidification. This has a detrimental impact on marine ecosystems.

Extreme Weather Events: There is a growing body of evidence linking the increase in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events (such as hurricanes, droughts, and heatwaves) to anthropogenic climate change.

Consensus Among Scientists: The overwhelming majority of climate scientists agree that human activities are a primary driver of climate change. This consensus is supported by organizations such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Attribution Studies: Climate scientists use sophisticated methods to attribute observed climate changes to specific causes. These studies consistently show that human activities are the primary driver of recent global warming.

In summary, the scientific evidence for anthropogenic climate change is based on a combination of observational data, physical principles, and climate models. It’s important to note that the scientific consensus on this issue is robust and supported by research from around the world.

A lot of words, but no scientific evidence. CCS is still much more expensive and than avoiding emissions. And far from being used at industrial scale. We only have less than ten years left to not reach the tipping points, CCS will come too late.

Climate “crisis” is the greatest hoax of all time. There is warming, but there is no crisis! All that this is doing is making the current generation incredibly anxious.

    • Erwin Ullrich

    • Tedrick Rumohr

      October 18, 2023 at 10:01 am

Climate change occurs naturally, that is true. But the rate at which it is changing has been expedited exponentially and is caused by human caused greenhouse gas emissions. This can lead to the extinction of humans.

  25. Alan Powell

    October 16, 2023 at 9:45 pm

The sun and it’s magnetic fields control climate.
More likely we are heading in to a cold phase.
Earthquake and volcanic activities are caused by the electric fields of the earth and sun … actually all our planets.
I hope you can understand this and just research it 🙃🐉💖🙏

Yes reducing climate change is possible but only if the intellectually inept Facebook conspiracy scientists from the US are dealt with first. Stupidity has consequences so get rid of the idiots first then then we can have a logical scientific discourse about the solutions

  31. Larry Mench

    October 17, 2023 at 1:47 pm

Well according the the CO2 Coalition and many other scientific communities, world temperatures have fluctuated/changed consistently over the last 10,000 years and guess what, they always will.
In the last 100 years, world tmps have increased only 0.8-1 degree depending upon which study you review AND at our current world temps, we are LOWER than 2000, 4000, 6000, 8000, &10,000 years ago. It’s not until approximately 10,200 years ago that our world’s temps were CONSISTENTLY lower than they are now.
If you are looking at a close proximity of time to create your “crisis”, you are flawed in your perspective without looking at the big picture.

    October 18, 2023 at 1:30 am

Can we get a TED Talk that details an actionable plan for going after greedy fossil fuel corporations that are almost entirely responsible for ruining the planet? That would be a good start. The cool future tech can happen at the same time as a failsafe measure, but we’re missing the forest for the trees here in the meantime by letting those companies run roughshod instead of nationalizing fossil fuels to ramp down usage quickly and imposing severe criminal penalties for any company that violates universally agreed upon green standards determined by an independent scientific oversight body

  33. David Sanchez

    October 18, 2023 at 1:39 am

Come on guys… do you really, really want to avoid climate crisis? Simple, reduce militar budget by 95% and apply all that money to reasearch, development and implementation on new renewables energy… or deeper: change this system from pathetic consumerism to more nature and sustainable way of live…
Anything else anr just empty chatting…🙄

Pay attention to the words people use. They tell you a lot from which perspective they are pushing on these high level vids. The goal is admirable, but I have serious doubts when the word “climate justice” is brought in. This is from. the same set of people who brought us carbon offsets, which turned out to be snakeoil of selling off responsibility for carbon produced to another group, who in turn would package and sell it off to another and another until it was just ignored and nothing was done other than the original company was absolved of responsibility.

  35. Vasilis Prantzos

    October 18, 2023 at 6:50 am

Nice PowerPoint slides, nice talk about getting together and having faith to achieve EarthShots, but where is the mention in what has already been done, past and future actions and also data to back the notion of “we actually have a shot” ?
This whole video felt like a presentation to cheer up people (much like the ones I was watching 5 years ago), and not a science/data backed presentation of initiatives to solve the climate problem 🤷‍♂
