For a ‘desktop replacement’, it’s vastly less expensive to buy yourself an external 32″ monitor, than to cough up an extra $1300 for a mere 16″ screen. I’m using a 2012 MBP with a Dell 32″ and it works flawlessly – the only thing I can’t do is adjust the screen controls via the Mac.

That’s what I thought but I plug in a couple of 27″ displays when I’m working at my desktop. On that basis I’m tossing up between the 13″ and the 16″. There are pluses and minuses for both.

You mentioned that the MacBook Air and 13” Pro have many similarities, and I have a question about that: how much of a difference does the larger battery of the Pro make to battery life when compared to the smaller capacity Air that runs a more efficient processor?

Mac book air are the worst purchase. they all have low powered variant of processors. don’t buy that. spend a little more and get the pro models they are much better in every aspect, and would last everyone much much longer.
“processor intensive” is not just for photoshop or video editing, you need good horsepower if you occasionally have 10-15 tabs open with mail app, music app and couple of utilities running in the background, you need a good quad core i5 that pro models have. and I highly recommend 16 gigs ram if you want to use that thing for over 4/5 years.

Macbook air is great. Not everyone edits video and photos all the time. Its perfect for daily task and thats what people buy it for. I’d rather get the air for these small tasks instead of an outdated macbook pro (base) with 8th gen chip and ddr3 ram?? ????

Derik Schell it has bad thermal design, low powered cpu chips with 1.1 ghz base clock. And i think I clearly explained that video editing is not the only thing that is processor intensive. And btw macbook pro 13 i5 from last year with its old ddr3 ram benchmarks higher than 2020 i5 air. But sure buy it.

Still not a fan of the TouchBar, it’s just not worth the money – especially since Apple has never put out a complementary keyboard. So when one works with their laptop closed in a “desktop mode” and connected to a desktop display (which I do most of the time), then the TouchBar is completely useless and it’s an expensive feature that’s rarely needed. I wish Apple would offer their laptops in a non-TouchBar version as they did a few years ago.

My eyes are set on the 16 inch when I decide the upgrade, primarily for screen. I don’t necessarily need all its power, but I do run a number virtual machines since I write tutorials and need to test different versions of Windows and apps. Right now, I am doing that on my 13 inch Early 2015 MBP, handles it surprisingly well, but its testing the limit and the screen is a bit cramped.

You’ll be very happy. I got the i7 with 32 gb. VM’s run smooth like buttah. I do a lot of virtual machines also. The i7 handled it well. Unless you are doing lots of video editing, this is where the i9 shines. I’m sure the VM’s would benefit with an 8-core i9, but the i7 should be fine and save you $500 or so.

I love my 2018 13 inch MacBook Pro! My sister has a 2018 MacBook Air and it is a really nice machine. However, for what I do I Cantel a bit of a difference between the machines. Mine just seems to run certain processes and applications better and faster.

I bought the new macbook air (2018) when it came out. I’m a student but after awhile it has started to slow down and become sluggish at times even when browsing the web. I have to close most of my tabs sometimes to fix the problem. I have the 1100 dollar one and it tends to heat up pretty quick. I wish i had bought the macbook pro 13 inch but this is a great laptop alltogether.

I want the best speaker on the MacBook even I’m not a content creator. Ugh, so likely I have to go with a 16-inch MacBook Pro then but it super expensive. Sometimes I found 16-inch MBP look sexy and oh my God it so big????. But I think I will be fine that size and weight because I use a Compaq laptop (I don’t know if people still remember Compaq) that much bigger, heavier(around 3kg I guess????), and thicker than 16” MBP.

air does not have good cooling. it will throttle when heats up to limit. It has poor thermal dissipation stay with the i3 for the 2020 no need for i5. if you need to do more intensive work stick to the pro.

i can only recommend the base model air, if you are thinking of getting the i5 upgrade, it means that you care enoough about performance to want that quad core. If so, then id recommend the base model pro easily. The 2020 air i5 model that I had heats up so quickly at the most menial tasks. Its loud and hot with just 5 – 7 tabs safari, mac photos app, discord, mail and itunes open. The killer is video conferencing and screensharing. The macbook air is abysmal at those tasks. Thats unacceptable to me. The laptop was easily at 80 – 100 degrees with the fans blaring (also i live in 33 degree ambient temperatures that would contribute to the temperatures). Ive since returend it for a 4tb port macbook pro. The i3 version runs alot cooler and if you can find the base model air for $900 or $950. that is a very good deal. If you were considering the i5 macbook air, you would be much better off with the base model pro. I promise you that.

Apple gets heat just cause they make a lot of money. Here are two unpopular opinions
a) Butterfly keyboards rock for touch typing and have been amazing in my personal experience. I have had very few issues with using them on 2 different MacBooks. Unless you have poor personal hygiene and constantly eat biscuits, french fries and pour cereal bits over your keyboard – you are not gonna face any issue.
b) The Touchbar is good looking, useful and intuitive. It is not obstructive at all and not imposing – it remains in the backdrop and works efficiently. I would never have a laptop without it. So I hate it when people complain about it. Look – its not trying to change the world.

Haha I gave in and paid the premium just for the bigger screen. I waited for the Memorial Day Weekend sales and saved $300 so it saved a little bit of hurt.
