Marcia’s delivery is so funny it’s easy to miss the critical point: We are bad mind readers. Like, really bad. Researcher Nicholas Epley coined the term “The Illusion of Insight” to describe this phenomenon, by which we try to imagine someone else’s perspective by “putting ourselves in their shoes.” Unfortunately, we’re terrible at it. The key to understanding someone else’s perspective and truly connecting with them is, as Marcia pointed out, asking questions. Ask meaningful and relevant questions, and then genuinely listen to their answers. Don’t listen for how you feel about their answers, listen for how they feel about them. So many problems are solved before they begin by simply asking people to describe their perspective to you, and resisting the urge to judge or add your opinion to the mix.

From NASA’s oral history transcript in 2002 interview with Sally Ride:
I remember the engineers trying to decide how many tampons should fly on a one-week flight;
they asked, “Is 100 the right number?”
“No. That would not be the right number.”
They said, “Well, we want to be safe.”
I said, “Well, you can cut that in half with no problem at all.”
so if 3-6 tampons per day is “normal” that would be 21-42 for a week, so 50 seems almost conservative considering it’s NASA and all
