Ukraine is on the front line of a war between freedom and tyranny, says chess grandmaster and human rights advocate Garry Kasparov. In this blistering call to action, he traces Vladimir Putin’s rise to power and details his own path from chess world champion to pro-democracy activist in Russia. His message is a challenge to global leaders to rise in support of Ukraine — and to choose life and love over death and hatred. “The price of stopping a dictator always goes up with every delay and every hesitation,” he says. “Meeting evil halfway is still a victory for evil.”

MR. Kasparov’s assessment of putin the an??al and of current day russia seems very accurate. The invaders have not changed their operating procedure since the second world war when they acted in the exact same way as in 2022 as related by my father who was there. Puty needs to be stopped and the Ukrainians havings no choice presently but to fight seem eager and willing to do it, therefore we all need to help Ukraine in any way we can by supplying them with the necessary equipment and weapons to accomplish the task of defeating the invaders and sending them back to where they came from. Lets accomplish this together with Ukraine and help them push their red derrières back across the border. Glory to Ukraine !

it is bewildering how casual Russia has been about this disgusting face-heel turn into full-on nationalist fascism. It’s been steadily happening for decades and the futility and frustration of trying to point this out to family and friends has been overwhelming

thank you for this, Garry, it’s validating to see common sense

Putler’s just a KGB thug though. I wish people would bring up Alexander Dugin more, as he seems to be the driving ideologist behind the modern national-imperialist push among the Russian brass

I hope that Mr. Kasparov is immediately invited to speak to NATO and at the United Nations. Then, from there, he begins a worldwide speaking tour. There is no place for thought that vacillates upon when we should act and why. This is not the day to bury our heads in the sand, or adopt the way of the chameleon.
In solidarity, all who understand the true value of a democratically achieved peace and the prosperity made possible thereby, must move to stop Putin and his war in the Ukraine.
We must not–as Mr. Kasparov pleads–take our freedoms of life, liberty, and love for granted. … We must fight now: we must win. We must love our neighbours as ourselves. We must move now, as decisively, courageously, and faithfully as is humanly possible to protect Ukrainian hearts and their home. We must all listen and trust Mr. Kasparov testimony. If this is not enough to convince even the most timid amongst us, then we must open our eyes, awake …see the dehumanization of Russian troops acting in Putin’s name to torture and annihilate our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, destroy all that is cherished …even their own Russian souls with every aggressive action they take. And, if we have lost faith in the human race, then lets do it for the Ukrainians’ beloved dogs and cats who still are trusting in us… for their lives are also at steak.

I shared this with everyone I know, and it’s so wonderful, I sent for the book right now, and listened to the talk, ten times in a row. This…this…this is it!

This. It is poetic, it is truth, it argues eloquently for courage and justice, and it’s an indictment of appeasement, apathy, and collusion with evil, which never pays, not if we value freedom and this gift of life.

To think in absolutes is sometimes, some might say often, a mistake, but many times like today, not to see things in stark relief, it is the biggest mistake of them all.

There is no compromise and negotiation with terrorists, butchers, murderers. It is life or it is death. It is lose or we must win, as that is our only choice!

And, that is exactly where we are right now. The longer we put off dealing forthrightly with a murderous dictator, the higher the price there is for us to pay.

Kasparov is great ! I want to say some words too ! Ukrainians is a nation , conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are free and equal . Now they are engaged in a horrible war , testing whether this nation , so conceived and so dedicated can long endure . Evil has no ethnicity . Ethnicity is privilege of virtue : English Humor , Italian opera , American Dream , Georgian polyphony , and now Ukrainian courage . We hope that in a row of this virtues soon will be added a new one : Russian awakening , wich will mean overthrow of crazy dictators . But Evil has servants . This servants offer other people’s suffering in tribute to Evil’s greatness . Evil is affraid of unity of fearless and free-spirited people . The history shows us that only such unity can resist and defeat it . And Ukrainians are now showing us one more example . Our commitment is to support them now . Glory to heroes . Glory to Ukraine .

Very interesting. Where I disagree is that we do know what pure good looks like. We are remembering it today, Good Friday. Living that in the present is the challenge. I also think that extreme nationalism is partially a response to the pace of change humans are not able easily to absorb. Our response to Russia must be tempered by knowledge that fear of change is not simply irrational and evil. Yes, the present can seem black and white, as decisions eventually must come down to either yes or no, but after a time of “Why?” “What if?” But I thank Mr. Kasparov for the clarity of his thought, and his bravery in expressing it!

Really great talk. What I would have added to it are two very important things.
The majority of Russian citizens support this war, it is not only Putin’s doing – many russians do want it.
Second point – there should be lessons learned from past decisions of Western leaders – appeasement of tyranny should never be repeated. It was done at least twice in Europe – first with Hitler, and much later with Putin. Such threats should be stopped as early as possible

Restating the obvious about the human condition does not make you some profound observer. Just because Kasparov was a great chess player doesn’t mean he is free of the vanities of any other human being. It was obvious when the USSR fell apart there were going to be major problems with a political reorganization. But what did you see from the West? Only gloating and “ we won, we won!”.
Garry would only be happy with a particular outcome that would fit his view and validate his opinions. What kind of dictator would egotistical Garry be? Just like Putin I suspect.

I mean all of your words are correct, but why are you showing these photos right now? where were you when US and NATO army did the same thing in Iraq? in Palestine? in Syria? why didn’t you talk about them? you’re suggesting that the people can die and suffer for many years under the false accusation they were terrorists? false accusation made by the “greatest” democracy in the world. Kasparov is one of the greatest strategists of chess to ever play the game. So I’m puzzled that he misses the global nuclear strategy that’s at play here.

Yes, Russia has a totalitarian history, today being run in capitalist mafia style, and America is free, the land of opportunities. And what with the carnage in Ukraine, I can understand why Kasparov is emotionally compelled to hyperbole about Russian “evil”. But, that’s all completely irrelevant to strategic nuclear realities, strategic nuclear realities that trump everything else at this critical moment in our history.

President Zelenskyy clamored for NATO membership since his ascendancy in 2019. He was not at all vague about his reasoning. NATO membership could allow him to authorize NATO nuclear and anti-nuke missiles to be placed a mere 375 miles from Moscow. That, of course, is completely unacceptable to President Putin, just as it was completely unacceptable to President Kennedy in 1962 when First Secretary Khrushchev of the USSR attempted to place Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. Like Kennedy’s appropriate military response then, Putin too has responded with a completely appropriate military action in an attempt to prevent Zelenskyy’s act of way, way over the line strategic nuclear aggression.

But the death in Ukraine that’s plastered all over social media has blinded even major political players from seeing the overriding strategic nuclear reality, that it was Zelenskyy who made the terribly provocative first move, as his truly dumb bunny act of situationally uncalled for strategic nuclear aggression has placed the entire world at imminent risk of utter annihilation.

Ideology and emotion can dumb down even the greatest of thinkers, as then they are no longer thinking, but merely feeling, and often through their distorted lens of unresolved family and country of origin issues.

Kasparov is to be greatly admired for his accomplishments over the board, regardless of his political opinion.

But he, like so many sports figures and entertainment industry personalities, would do well to reemploy their minds on this matter, to then realize the only valid focus required for both grasping and resolving this strategic nuclear crisis: Zelenskyy must silence his NATO membership clamoring once and for all and surrender to Russian terms, the ethical thing to do to take the entire planet out of immediate danger of nuclear annihilation that he alone provoked.

This is a battle between humanity and nuclear missiles, nothing less. A polemic us v. them emotional ideologically based attitude, like that presented by Kasparov, is clearly taking the side of the missiles.

Indeed, the last thing we need to do at this point is to employ emotionally charged insinuations of “evil” to goad a cognitively impaired leader to make a humanity destroying tragic mistake and push Putin into his promised nuclear response. We are already dangerously close to that horror as I write.

    • Per Håkon Oftedal

      April 18, 2022 at 10:18 am

But this war has been going on since 2014, probably also in an attempt at stopping Ukraine NATO membership as they don’t take in members who are at conflict (just as with Georgia). There was no question of Ukraine joining NATO right now. And anyway, not placing missiles in Ukraine should not be a problem (for instance Norway is NATO member but has no missiles). The comparison with Cuba only has limited validity as US actually did accept Cuba being communist and having defensive weaponry. I’d also like to see sources of Zelenskyj statements that he wants missiles in Ukraine… He has also refrained from NATO ambitions at this point! Regarding Putins pattern of attacking former Soviet nations it has been clear all the way that this was his plan regardless of NATO membership. And him succeeding in this attempt would be a catastrophe. Only because he has nuclear warheads he shouldn’t be able to just do as he pleases. A nuclear war would be just as devastating to the Russians as to anyone else (or worse).

  146. Sviatoslav Bilokin

Ukraine is not perfect and has a lot of problems, they say. So does every country in the world. Every country has loads of problems, imperfections, internal conflicts and some degree of injustice. Only dictators and empires never face these internal problems, they will rather exploit the problems of their neighbours, and they always do it to stay afloat.
Is that the path our world needs to go? Exploit problems of our neighbours instead of solving our own issues?
I can say for sure, the defeat of Ukraine will not stop this war, because in case of fall of Kyiv, this war will never end, it will spread all over the continent. The dictator and his empire will hunt for their next prey sooner than you think. This war will end only in case of Russia’s disintegration as the last classical empire on the planet.
So, should we go all-in in support of Ukraine, or should we wait until the death toll will reach a couple of millions?
