I used to collect these things, I had one for a long time, it somehow broke in half. I don’t know how it broke, but I kept it for luck until it broke, sad part is that I don’t remember what type of gem it was, plus it was given to me by an old teacher

I could watch another 20 hours of this show and tell.

  90. @rebeccalegg7649

    January 7, 2024 at 4:37 pm

In the four Cs, cut does not refer to shape in the sense she uses it here. A GIA report will note the shape of the stone (emerald, pear, cushion, etc) but the “cut” grade refers to how well proportioned the diamond’s symmetry, dimensions and polish are in maximizing the particular stone’s scintillation, fire and brilliance. Cut and shape are two different things. And the “cut” grade only applies to modern stones, specifically modern round brilliants, not old mine cuts, Old European cuts, rose cuts, or any of the other beautiful antique diamonds cuts.

  91. @genghisgalahad8465

    January 7, 2024 at 4:53 pm

I should…HOPE not! 💎 Quip aside, is it a blood diamond gotten on the backs of slavery, economic exploitation, child labor, metals pollution of water supply, and degradation of the living surrounding environment? If so, then it is most certainly CURSED. And cursed with an ironic name.

No! The Moh’s scale is not logarithmic. It’s merely comparative, ie you can state that one material is harder than the another, which is itself harder than another material and that’s about it. You can also insert new materials in between the traditional 10 materials defined in the Moh’s scale.

No, difficulty in breaking (for the jade) is not measured as toughness. It should high tensile strength that defines how breakable (by bending) something is.

Toughness is such breakability under different temperatures. For example metals become easier to break when subjected to very cold temperatures vs at room temperature. As gems are normally kept at around the room temperature, toughness is not a important factor for it at all.

While diamonds do not last forever and will degrade to cheap graphite when the diamond is kept at around normal atmospheric temperature and pressure, it will be over millions and billions of years, not really anything to be concerned about. What is more important is that diamonds subjected to high temperatures, like in a fire or when the diamond is being polished or used for polishing, it will change to graphite more easily.
