I like how said it’s important to be able to sing the solo. A lot of shredmasters turn playing guitar into a flex fest, but it really helps if they can do melodic too. That’s probably why Tim and Polyphia have gotten so big.

At first i started with learning different chords and power chords and then learned how to do artificial notes and things like that and triplets. I learned a lot of techniques you use in metal before I learned any specific song and then I started learning my favorite songs and it was much easier. Ive even started to write my own music but just for fun with my friends and we havent made a full song yet but its defintely very fun.

I think the “Boomer Bend” thing was more a confusion about what he was referring to, i.e. that all guitar bends are for boomers. How he uses it in actuality is pretty hilarious and appropriate.

  36. james crawley

think everyone’s first guitar has Mojo, my Cort i got at 13 just feels so much more comfy to play than any other guitar I’ve ever bought I assume because it was my first and what I played most in the beginning , or maybe my fingers just aren’t long and lanky enough for other fretboards lol

  67. FuzzyThoughts

    March 7, 2023 at 3:43 pm

On the question about making original music, I feel like that idea is just weird. EVERYTHING is derivative, your favorite old music sampled even older music, originality isn’t actually what people want. They want something they already like twisted in an interesting way.

2:06 it’s a cool explanation about solos being memorable, that’s probably my favorite thing about Polyphia is all of their music “fits” the band, but it has such as wide range of sounds where some bands just only sound like one thing and are easy to forget, Polyphia sticks in the memory as being so unique each time

I wonder if Tim realizes he is a musical genius; he seems to be aware, but plays it cool. His brain sees music everywhere and even better his body is able to keep up.
He breaks down music so nonchalantly, like he is explaining 2+2 He doesn’t give cliche bs answers but explains very simple and concise.

Also he has this trendy air about him, but he is quite pleasant when he gets on real-talk mode. He is more approachable than apperances let on.

Once in a generation talent, Polyphia has made history and will go down in the Hall of Fame in my opinion.

As someone who learnt to play guitar, i mean, went to music class and everything but at the end, i play piano and drum way better than guitar itself, i’m really deeply respect for those who can play guitar. it’s not an easy instrument and usually when i play guitar, it’s frustrated me.

The one thing I don’t get is his point about intonation like you can just adjust it? It’s not like each guitar has fixed intonation. Can someone confirm if what he said actually makes any sense?

Seems weird he didn’t mention that you can easily adjust your intonation by adjusting the scale length of the string at the saddle……..pretty basic, he made it sound like that guitar was beyond sounding any better

Not a big Polyphia fan, but always could acknowledge his impressive technical ability. I admit, I had a completely unfounded negative opinion of this dude. In actuality really well spoken and unpretentious. Was a humbling reminder to keep my own pretentiousness in check. Enjoyed this interview a lot, really insightful.

  281. TheGradyBaby

    May 31, 2023 at 8:59 pm

Every time Tim needed to stop and explain what a certain musical term meant (harmonic minor, roots/fifths/octaves, arpeggios)–that’s all music theory. It’s a really useful shorthand to communicate with other musicians. I hope people don’t think it’s some elitist gate-keeping thing, and instead see it for the useful tool that it is!

tim is such a good dude.. sad that so many people got bent out of shape about the whole ‘boomer bends’ thing- it’s clearly not meant to be a disparaging term, he even says that bohemian rhapsody has one of best solos of all time and it’s full of boomer bends. methinks a lot of boomers are feeling self conscious about themselves and need to get over it.

something that he might be unaware of because hes been playing good, intonated guitars for years, most people are probably playing on a guitar that hasnt been intonated properly and the strings are an inch (not literally) off the fretboard thus making it way harder.

Saddles can be adjusted for intonation. So.. that is a non sequitur. If we spend lots of money on a guitar, many factors come into play. But one would assume that even a cheap guitar, when properly set up by a competent person will perform to a decent standard. Maybe upgrade the tuners and the nut, together with more precise saddles. But that’s just common sense. Love the style and the strong enby vibes here

I hate to say it but the part about intonation here is pretty bad actually. Intonation is about so much more than just whether the 12th fret matches with its harmonic. The 12th fret could be spot on but other frets could be way off. And you can adjust intonation, so just because it’s off to start with doesn’t mean the guitar is badly intonated, but if it’s off in many places you obviously can’t really correct that.

The only reason us old fogies get upset is because when you have to name everything……It’s just stupid to some of us. It’s good or it’s not good its up or down. Sure change is inevitable and the guitar most certainly has changed over the years Boomer Bends just sounds stupid.. these are LICKS, PULL-OFFs and HAMMER-ONs thats it….Simple.
I guess these new generations are so used to being updated constantly that they feel they need to update life constantly. No attention span. Tim Henson you’re an amazing young guitarist, absolutely phenomenal. I’m not a Boomer, I’m Gen X. Each Generation adds more to the bag of tricks and licks but mostly its all a way to communicate through music. Some stories are just better than others. For example Action packed, Thriller, Horror, Drama, Comedy. These all make you feel something when you watch them. I relate music in the same way. Jazz is very sophisticated and brainy, Rock is your Action packed movie. Death metal is Horror, Blues would be Drama Ect.

Anyway just my thoughts. Have a wonderful day..

That is not what Djent is. Djent is a “sub-genre” of Metal, more metal core/hardcore. Some debate if it’s really a thing. It’s not about altering the palm mute placement (or the “chug” as Tim calls it). It’s about syncopated riffs. Quick chugs in an altering rhythm. Check out Meshuggah or Kadinja as most of their songs do it a ton. Steve T has a great video on Djent too. Odd that Tim, such a guitar legend, has this completely wrong. Although, being a fan of Djent and Polyphia, I can say that Polyphia/Tim Henson are NOT at all Djenty.

“Boomer Bends” are what give music soul and feel that evoke true emotion. His shredding style is soulless and sounds like a video game. Highly talented lacking in emotion.

About tone, good guitars, and mojo, I would argue that especially with a bargain guitar it’s not always going to just HAVE mojo, it’s more like you got to just believe it’s in there somewhere and that if you keep experimenting you’ll eventually find it. If you’ve ever grinded on Minecraft searching for diamonds and netherite scraps, it’s a lot like that. My first cheapo acoustic sounded fantastic on the low E and then all the strings in the 5th to 9th fret range. My first cheapo electric had tons of mojo within the first 7 frets but above that was basically mush and garble. That was a long time ago and I know better now, but the important thing was that I didn’t see those zones as limitations, I saw them as opportunity. I’m sharing all this because, coincidentally, I’m recording an oversized album right now that features 30+ songs that were all written on those two guitars between the ages of 13 and 16, so I’ve been reliving memories of that mindset quite a bit lately.

7:56 a quick hack to hear what the bass player is doing… if you don’t have any tools to filter it, just let the music play and turn on a blow dryer. you will probably only be able to distinguish the lower frequencies. at least it incidentally helped me a lot when I was listening to music while drying my hair. you still might want to turn up the bass a little to get a better result, but the white noise-ish sound of the blow dryer should eliminate some of the high and mid frequencies.

I don’t understand. You’re saying that learning music theory and reading isn’t important, that you don’t know much about it, but you’re talking about root notes, octaves, fifths, eighth notes, syncopations, arpeggios—that’s knowing music theory. I suppose you mean you don’t know it in depth, but you know things, and they’re always important, even if you know little, as you say.

Boomer bend is just a derogatory term that belittles guitarists that paved the way for modern guitar genres. If you don’t want it to sound bad, don’t use a negatively connoted term.

  649. @longlivedio3498

    April 22, 2025 at 8:11 pm

I’m here because I was watching a guitar video and they mentioned Tim Henson who I’ve never heard of

  650. @jonlangstaff6058

    April 24, 2025 at 8:45 am

Intonation is set at the string saddles. Slide the saddle forward and backwards to match the pitches. Cheap guitars (as shown) have this feature as well as expensive guitars. Do it with new strings (they stretch unevenly over time..). Use a tuner. Dont expect old shop strings to be intonated correctly. Dont turn down a guitar because of this, or buy an expensive one instead over this issue. Its easily fixed. The expensive guitar in the video has two strings that are not intonated properly (possibly string age, or guage change). Happy playing 🙂
