Now, this is a very useful and cool video about drumming!. Man! It was awesome, I’m a drummer myself, and this video may be used perfectly as an introduction for someone who is interested to learn about drumming, this video shows a global view of drumming in a way that is easy, entertaining, accurate and very didactic… Larnell, you are a true educator and an awesome musician!

Back in the 1940s, jazz pianist Art Tatum used to play for friends after the club closed, and I would have loved to just sit and listen to him groove. I now feel that way about Larnell Lewis.

Yes breath Larnell. Breathe! But amazing solo at level 13 and amazing to see him in the pocket and knowing what his brain is thinking as the levels roll up into singular moments.

Exceptional. The editing was as flawless and helpful as Larnell’s drumming. As a self-taught drummer who has a lot of holes in my knowledge (can play some advanced fills but struggle sometimes with limb independence or maintaining polyrhythms) , I am definitely going to be coming back to this.

  79. Chema Siller

    March 12, 2023 at 5:18 pm

Nice, i would add on the first levels, the way the haptic feedback feels on the bouncing with the drums or cymbals, your wrist really gets to know the feel and you can make repetitive strikes more easily. For me, it marks an insane difference when playing with sticks because i play with brushes.

Few years back, Larnell Lewis came and gave a workshop in dubai, UAE. His Explanations were lucid and clear, he went over ever thing he was teaching so many times, and also how he learnt things. It was so inspiring. I didn’t know who he was at that time, but he left me with an impression which i’ve kept in my head for so long now. I talked to him and he just seemed like a really nice and down to earth person.

Larnell is one of the best drummers I’ve seen in years. And the fact that he actually knows how to teach what he knows in a clear, concise way… as well as being a player at such a high level… is an extremely rare combination. I’ve met so many great musicians who barely know how to have a two-way conversation with an average human being, let alone teach their art.

I think perhaps the single most helpful drum lesson I ever had was when Dennis Chambers explained how to play in the pocket. And it wasn’t even because of the pocket. He made the point that, as long as you feel the underlying beat in your core like it’s your own heartbeat, and keep the primary drum strikes on those beats… you can embellish and improvise pretty much whatever you want around it and it’ll sound okay. Sprinkle on as much flavor as you want, but it’s gotta have a solid core.
