“What if I was to tell you that a game of peek-a-boo could change the world?” asks seven-year-old Molly Wright, one of the youngest-ever TED speakers. Breaking down the research-backed ways parents and caregivers can support children’s healthy brain development, Wright highlights the benefits of play on lifelong learning, behavior and well-being, sharing effective strategies to help all kids thrive by the age of five. She’s joined onstage by one-year-old Ari and his dad, Amarjot, who help illustrate her big ideas about brain science. (This TED Talk was produced in collaboration with Minderoo Foundation as an educational tool for parents and caregivers around the world and is supported by UNICEF.)

What if I was to tell you

that a game of peekaboo
could change the world?

Sounds impossible, right?

Well, I’m here today to prove it’s not.

Hi, I’m Molly and I’m seven.

And this is my little friend, Ari.

Say “Hi,” Ari.

Hi.

Oh, and this is my neighbor, Amarjot.

He has to take Ari away now
to get ready for our experiment.

But don’t worry, they’ll be back.

My talk today is about some powerful
things you grownups can do.

that shape us as children
and the adults we become.

How do I know?

Because my parents and people around me
did them early and often.

I know not all kids are as lucky.

Some of my friends, some kids at my school
and many around the world.

And I would really like
to help change that.

Thanks to scientists,

we now know just how important
the first five years are

for our health and development,

especially our brains.

Ari started learning
long before he was even born,

from inside his mommy’s tummy.

When Ari was born,

he was tiny and he cried all the time.

He was always hungry
and he pooped a lot.

[Laughter]

Now he laughs and giggles
and makes funny noises.

But those are just the changes
we hear and see.

That’s way more going on inside.

So, let’s talk more about our brains.

The blue bag is a rough size and weight
of a healthy baby’s brain at birth.

The red one is a baby’s brain
after the first year.

It almost doubles in volume.

And by my age, it’s almost 90 percent
the volume of an adult brain.

Our brains develop faster
in our early years

than at any other time
in our lives.

It can create up to one million
neural connections every second.

But we need your help.

Our healthy development depends
on these top five things,

One, connecting; two, talking;

three, playing; four, a healthy home,

five; community.

All of this helps our brains
and us reach our full potential.

So what’s something you can do
that can really make a difference?

Scientists call it serve and return.

That’s just a grown-up way of saying
connect, talk and play with us.

And here’s the really big news.

Amarjot, Ari, you ready?

(Audio) Amajat: Ready?

Molly Wright: Copycat games
build imagination and empathy.

(Amarjot and Ari laughing)

Naming games build vocabulary
and attention.

Amarjot: Daddy. Ari. Daddy. Ari.

MW: And games like peekabo —
yep, peekaboo —

actually build memory and trust.

Amarjot: Peekaboo!

MW: Each time you talk to us,
play with us, make us laugh,

it not only builds and strengthens
our relationships and mental health,

it actually teaches us
some of the most important life skills,

from making friends to taking the test,

to getting a job,

to one day maybe even starting
a family of our own.

Interactions early and often matter.

Take it from me,

the seven-year-old up here
talking about brain science.

(Laughter)

OK, now let’s see what happens
when the connection is taken away.

So now he’s trying to get
his dad’s attention again.

He’s reaching out like,
“That was fun, why have you stopped?”

(Ari cries)

I know it’s important for adults
to use their devices sometimes,

but kids are hardwired
to seek out meaningful connections,

not receiving them
causes confusion and stress.

OK, Amarjot, please re-engage.

Amarjot: Ah, there’s Ari.

(Ari laughs)

MW: Now what if our whole childhood
was like that last 30 seconds?

How hard it would be
for a child to feel calm.

To feel safe.

To learn to trust anyone.

And the lifelong impact that would have.

That makes me feel sad.

Ari only reacted the way he did
and recovered so quickly

because the connection between him
and his dad is usually so strong.

The positive relationships
with the grown-ups in our lives

gives kids the confidence we need

to try new things, to explore
and be a kid.

So please,

try to remember the most special period
for our development is

the first five years.

Starting from inside mommy’s tummy.

What’s something really
impactful you can do?

Serve and return.

And when?

Early and often.

Please give it up for a Amarjot and Ari.

(Applause)

Every moment together is an opportunity

to connect, talk and play.

Imagine the difference we could make
if everyone everywhere did this.

To us, the children,

it’s so much more than just a game.

It’s our future.

Thank you.

(Applause)

See? Peekaboo really can change the world.

(Applause)

Paying close attention to our kids to the age of 5 is so crucial that we don’t have the luxury of not taking the responsibly since it sets the stage for each child’s rest of their lives.

Truly got inspired by her , till this point in my life I always thought one day I’ll do things to bring good changes in society , now I’m not ready. But seeing this talk , It made think that if a 7 year old kid can stand among adults to try to talk about change , why can’t I ? 😅

I don’t like this at all. You can tell she’s been trained to talk like this, which words to use and how exactly to enunciate them. Good job mimicking grown up TED talkers but far from authentic.

This is the worst bullshit I have heard all my life. Little children need daydreaming and being left alone to be bored to the core, it’s healthy for them, not constantly talking, constantly talking to somebody makes trash out of best brain

I am so moved by this talk, having tears I am smiling also. The message is so important, for us as adults to realize (and try improving) our own childhood short-comings and to be responsible adults (whatever roles we take on as parents, foster parents, baby-sitters, uncles/aunts, walking-by people) towards kids.

Anyone else think she has overbearing parents forcing the genius kid shtick on her? We see this all the time with high achievement programs. Where the parents really want their children to succeed. The kids eventually do succeed by all the measures of what it takes to be a gifted individual. But sometimes at the cost of developmental and social disorders. Lifelong depression.

If u can see why kids are happy, how they have confidence and smart awareness, or even their attitude is; all of them are the result from the parents who’re responsible and understand how much important they role for developing their own child.

Please,,, you can catch your big dream, but is it worth it to sarcrifice your family’s happiness? I dont think so.

    Keep it up, parents!
I know its hard, but i do believe its worth. Love y’all! (✓^*^)/

Its SO incredibly sad that children these days need to step up and give talks like this for us, adults, to do better. If a seven-year old worries about these things, its simply not a good sign. I wish children could care about their smaller little world and not about the future, same future we screwed up for them. Point to think about

I learned a lot of this in child development and child psychology class and honestly, I thank God bc at the same time I was finishing college I was raising my newborn and I learned to undo the past mistakes that were done in my family. Growing up Hispanic didn’t get much warmth or even an I love you. I didn’t know what I love you was until I started dating at 18. I learned so much enough that my son is now two and is confident, smart, mature, has manners, and honestly amazes me and makes me realize I am doing something right.

Chapeau! Nice performance. But why stop at five? What happens when parents have to work three jobs all day? Maybe, people need to have more space and time to reflect and less worries and stress. The “devices” add much to the problem but are not the root of it. This kid is absolutely right, but much change is needed to happen before her points can even be addressed realistically and properly by the majority of the people in the world.

You know what… All of us here know this already. How amazing would it be for us all to focus our time and energy on our kids for the first 5 years of their life, but the problem lies at juggling everything else. As (future) parents, we have to be ready for our child’s other basic needs like food, clothing, shelter. We can’t have that unless we work and working takes us away from our kids. It would be such a perfect world if all those needs are met, but the only thing we can do is try to balance everything as best as we can. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing to support your family. You’re doing amazing. Take time off for yourself as well from time to time, cause you can’t take care of your kid/s unless you take care of yourself first. ❤️

Wow, powerful message by Molly but what is more striking is the number of adults I know who have delivered ted talks and have not only been more nervous than Molly before and during delivery of the keynote but the adults did not deliver it as confident and competent as Molly. It just shows that we lose confidence as we get older because life has a way of knocking us down the older we get.

  116. Ksenia Navi

    August 14, 2021 at 9:57 pm

Omg i remember being a kid and growing up and feeling exactly what she is saying. It was so meaningful when i could connect to people around, my friends parents, my parents friends, and those who acknowledged me gave me confidence, those who talked to me and took interest and time to build relationship with me made me feel like I am matter and i have something to give back. Made me feel confident and strong, not scared. I still often remember those people, they gave me identity and an example to measure right and wrong connections with other people today. I still remember myself as a kid and that strength. I miss that. I don’t get to meet people like that anymore often. Well last night i met 3 very respectful young men in their early 20s by who i am so impressed, cause people my age are mean and superficial. Those boys are not spoiled by life yet.

interesting … it would have been an asian child on stage… we would see tons of hateful comments in the comments section saying tiger parents are driving their kids too much, they don’t let them be kids, that they are awful parents, and the kid did not want to be on stage so on and so forth…

  141. Marion Ingold

    August 15, 2021 at 11:36 pm

Every word Molly sais is true. But as a seven year old, shouldn‘t she be playing and roaming free somewhere, instead of already giving ted talks and taking so much responsability and the pressure of performing already on her shoulders? Sureley she didn‘t write every word of this talk herself, but she had to learn and rehearse it, which of course she did brilliantly. But I always ask myself, how much of this is actually the childs wish to do and how much do the parents influence and push them.

What’s amazing is that so many of these seemingly silly little things are either subconsciously taught to us by our culture or embedded in our biology. Almost everyone does those little things with babies, even if they’ve never had one or been taught to.

I’m crying. She is confident, bright and brilliant.
There are so many kids who grow up to be adults with CPTSD. This is a crisis. And she is sharing in a key way to prevent this from happening. It also helps if couples plan accordingly when having a family and space out having children especially if they notice a baby is in need of more trust and reassurance instead of having one kid after another.

How much should we invest in teachers, and what should new investment actually involve? Education innovator Randy Seriguchi Jr. suggests the US should create a “G.I. Bill” for teachers, with a particular emphasis on uplifting Black male professionals. He shares a model of this idea in action through community partnerships in San Francisco, which provide aspiring teachers with graduate school tuition, subsidized housing, personalized fit assessments and more. “If we truly want to elevate this profession to inspire new, diverse talent to join us, we have to improve both the personal and professional experiences associated with teaching,” says Seriguchi.
