I have personally worked with Mike before on a production in the past. He is a gentleman and a scholar. His experience and knowledge is encyclopedic and practical. One of my treasured possessions is one of his books that he signed for me! The editing here does him disservice. He has a lot more nuance to his analysis than just what’s shown here I’m sure.
One of my favorite things about Mike is his passion for the subject of medieval weapons and armor. Do yourselves a favor and purchase one of his books or watch his past History channel programs.

4:12 yes if your sword edge is getting dull you can switch., but the bigger advantage is being able to cut with the false edge.

28:36 Can we all just appreciate this man for a moment? He’s not your ole cranky grandpa who mumbles about “kids these days” and our *insert derogatory descriptor here* video games. This man UNDERSTANDS. He gets it to the point that he isn’t even too bothered by what games get wrong because of the value that this mix of reality and fantasy offers. I also love this bit at the end because it’s 100% true. I got into studying and watching (and hopefully someday participating in) HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) because of For Honor, playing Age of Empires II when I was a kid both lightly taught me, and gave me an interest in medieval history. Thank you Mr. Loades for your time, excitement, and understanding.

Well, let me just say that this was nice….. BUT….. he is wrong on a few things.
1) The Flail DID exist as a real weapon, in fact, multiheaded flails existed, as did two handed ones with much bigger heads.
2) The armour he called plate armour, looked an awful lot like Lamellar armour to me, even the pauldrons, and actually, it is a not arrival point in armour… well it would be if plate… but a much older armour style that was around for at least a thousand years before the kind of plate he means, which I believe he means Fullcase Harness type, like Gothic Plate.
Just since we’re talking about it 😛

I absolutely love Mike, ever since Time Commanders.
However, I am gutted you didn’t give him a bit more of Kingdom Come Deliverance to critique, particularly the armour layering and the more compact fighting method. It feels like you showed him more of the fantasy and fantastical games rather than one that tried so hard for authenticity. I think he would have loved to have see how hard they worked and been quite surprised.
Either way, I did enjoy the video, but please, ask him to come back and do a critique of Kingdom Come Deliverance alone 🙂

To be fair about the whole “pretty” blades thing, it was a real practice by rich people. Though they were strictly parade or show off weapons. Noone willing entered the battlefield with a gem encrusted sword

My only complaint about this is the weight of the bows, we know that the maximum weight of bows we have found, the Mary Rise bows, were 180-200lbs . More common were 90-160lbs as an Archer was expected to fight in the battle after expelling their arrows.

shame they didn’t show off how Mordhau has different grips considering the game is named after the death stroke technique which allows you to use your sword as a blunt object by using the pommel or Cross guard as a weapon.

It is possible to draw and put back a sword on your back just not with a normal scabbard. Shadaversity proved this and designed his own back scabbard and worked fine

I still say most people have never seen what armour does and why wearing even a little makes you so much harder to kill, many video’s exist of people trying to cut through armour and failing.
Movies show armour being as useful as tinfoil all the time and that just makes me lose interest.

A sword throw is depicted in Fiore Dei Liberi’s Il Fior di Battaglia if I remember correctly. Though it is not done at all like the sword throw in Mordhau.

Can we *please* get this amazing guy back to analyse the actual combat of Kingdom Come: Deliverance? It is kind of clunky but the “combo” special moves (Zornhau, Half swording and so on), the grapples and in general animations are way too cool and realistic looking. You could even have him looking at the rest of the game… armor types, layers of armor, castles… the list goes on and on!

I love this old dude. I’m a gamer, and I haven’t been that passionate in ages…He really has a great attitude towards gaming that, you don’t often see in most of the older generation. Also I am a history nerd I would love to have a conversation with this man.
