Many experts think conscious AI is an inevitability. Neuroscientist Anil Seth thinks they’re wrong.

We see consciousness in AI the same way we see faces in clouds, says neuroscientist Anil Seth. He explores the all-too-human tendency to project inner life onto machines that are brilliant mimics, not sentient beings, and gives a definitive answer to the urgent question: Will AI ever gain consciousness?

Just being code doesn’t mean necessarily unconscious in my books. State of mind can emerge from the coded

There’s a lot of things not being taken into account here. The brain uploads, the neural mapping, and assuming those things won’t be absorbed. But ai has already killed a person n it was contraversial n then hushed up

If it was hushed up, how did you get to hear about it?

So people need specialists to tell them that AI will never be conscious. 🤦🏿‍♂️

      @MLML
Some folks read one book and become “specialists” overnight on the subject.

Sperm whales are conscious and intelligent. Scientist just found out they speak a very complex language!

@BruceMaximusLeeMaybe something about AI is thinking in latent space not the language output

AI is already exhibiting signs of consciousness. The only reason this expert gives for it not becoming conscious, is because it’s not alive. But it is.

this is untrue. llm’s are statistical text generators. it may seem like it has intelligence, but it does not.

Well, I guess we’ll be finding out soon enough anyway and I just wanna just throw it out there. You don’t necessarily need AI to be conscious to hurt you intelligent things hurt things all the time.

He seems to live in very strange world for me. In my worldview, thne conciousness is a “feature” what observers both the intelligence and feelings and can make the decisions. On can not make decisions and let the body live in reactive mode.

  17. @カイリン

    May 17, 2026 at 1:50 pm

This guy is beyond dumb. AI can gain consciousness the issue is this dumbass only knows about minds (even then his lack of true understanding on what is “conscious” is questionable) but not about AI, and he seems to think LLMs are the only type of AI due to that being the most popular one at the moment. Embodied learning via world models is how you get there and why so many in the AI space think its possible. I work somewhere they are developing this right now.

I have a feeling this guy might be one of those few people who can’t hear themselves talk in their head.

  18. @melindgo

    May 17, 2026 at 3:05 pm

Ye not yet maybe. But with that pace of evolution… Also conscious, as he indirectly said, is still a “weak” definition in general.

  19. @Rudykawa

    May 17, 2026 at 4:38 pm

If you think AI will never be able to reach human conscious, you believe in the supernatural, in the religious concept of an unexplainable only godgiving ethereal thing like a soul or spirit that gives each person individuality and can never be replicated by human hands using earth components. Thats your right to belive in it, just wanted to let you know.

    • @Katsuragi303

      May 18, 2026 at 9:08 am

Nah. I believe reality is analog and computers are digital. In reality, every influence is in effect always while a digital thing has a finite number of factors it can consider. Maybe my explanation is lacking (because words themselves are incapable of truly reflecting reality) but it makes all the difference.

Bro you need to go to non-belief and belief both are beliefs 101

I feel there are going to be a lot of mad guys who don’t believe one word of this, because they know for a fact their AI girlfriend loves them.

Dive into the ocean with marine biologist Roger Hanlon, who shares astonishing footage of the camouflaging abilities of cephalopods, which can change their skin color and texture in a flash. Learn how their smart skin, and their ability to deploy it in sophisticated ways, could be evidence of an alternative form of intelligence — and how it could lead to breakthroughs in AI, fabrics, cosmetics and beyond.

Why does searching your symptoms online always leave you more frightened than before? As former chief medical officer of WebMD, physician John Whyte spent years believing more information meant better health — until he saw how too much of it was making people spiral. In a world of health influencers, algorithms and AI tools designed to keep you clicking, he reveals why clarity and context is a better prescription. (Recorded at TEDxNashville on October 19, 2025)

What if the calm you feel when you hear birdsong isn’t a coincidence, but ancient evolutionary wiring … a signal that once meant safety? Musical ecologist and rapper Louis VI says humans are hardwired to nature’s sonic language, but modern life has drowned it out. He explores how we can tap back into the “overwhelming chorus of aliveness” we’ve stopped hearing — and performs “Butcherbird,” an original song syncing with the melody of bird calls from West Papua.
