This is absolutely terrific.
I especially liked how you answered the question whether a cult could be two people. When I think about my birth family with whom I have cut off all contact, it’s exactly like that. They’re a narcissistic family which centers around one aspiring ‘leader,’ gaslighting anyone who doesn’t follow or commit—which would be me in most cases. So I suppose I can say I’m a cult survivor.

I wonder if part of the selection process, whereby the Heaven’s Gate leader chose a particular style of Nike shoes, might have had some sense of sacrifice attached to it. Of course, availability is a prerequisite. It couldn’t be something that members might not be able to find. But another important feature is the price. They’re not cheap. So choosing to buy them was sort of a commitment to the cause. And anyone having thoughts of leaving might have the sunk-cost fallacy rattling around in their mind, whereby part of the value to staying in the cult includes the resources you’ve already expended. As long as you stay in the cult, those purchases were worthwhile. If you leave, then in one instant all of the money you spent on all of those things becomes a waste. It feels like losing money, even if the money was already spent long ago.

Tbh a lot of our political landscape is turning quite cultish, and I mean that for both the left and the right. One of my close friends is a devotee to the far side of one political party, and he pretty much does whatever they say. He takes on all their opinions, boycotts what they say should be boycotted, buys items with their slogans, doesn’t like those who oppose his group, etc. All the while never once looking into the claims the group makes or why they have those beliefs. He follows blindly and it’s kind of horrific when you step back and look at it.

@amla If it is open, and doing good things, It is probably called something totally different. The trick is Honesty, openness, doing good things, accountable for actions, that would be called something like “good leadership”, think of a volunteer group that works.
Example, St John’s Ambulance. I’m sure you can think of more examples, that’s just one I volunteered for.
It is things like secrecy, hidden agendas, people cannot leave easily if they change their mind, that make it a cult. * I am a survivor.

This is the best therapy I’ve had since abandoning the belief system I held for 3 years. Thank you so much. It’s so lonely on the outside because you don’t have anyone to relate to, and it’s not like there’s many therapists kicking around who specialise in treating someone who left a cult, nor are there any support groups. Usually I just crack jokes about me being stupid or crazy for ever believing anything like that… but it’s lonely because no-one gets it. Thank you for helping me feel more normal. It’s hard to understand the experience when it’s over.

They hook young mothers and women with a promise, They build them up and develop friendships and support systems and a false sense of love. They get you to spend all your money on their crappy leggings 5000 dollars worth. They encourage you to go into debt. They want to get husbands to quit their jobs and help the wives so that all their eggs are in one bad basket so they can’t leave. If any problem or question arises, they gaslight you and say it is your fault and when you leave, none of your friends will talk to you. All that love and support is gone.

1.) A charismatic leader. Christianity usually has pastors who are meant to persuade and lure people into Christianity.
2.) A transcendent belief system. Christians believe that during the rapture times, because of their belief, they’ll be brough into heaven, while everyone else will suffer during Armageddon, so that box is checked off…
3.) System of Control. Deuterotomy, enough said.
4.) System of Influence. They demand you to fear and worship God, enough said.
Moral of the story: Christianity is a cult. I’m not even saying that as a jab, that’s my literal conclusion. Even having seen and been around Christians in my life, I know for a fact that they act 100% like cult members in every way shape and form.

I have always joked about joining a cult, but when the opportunity arose, I didn’t.
My friend invited me to volunteer at her church’s events. I helped out a few time, but I’m an atheist and felt uneasy at their events and I opted out of her church events. I read more about her church later and the internet and my other Christian friends confirm that her church was a cult.
She is married to one of the pastors now and moved into the neighborhood owned by the church. My other friends all tell me to leave her be, as long as she is happy. I still feel uncomfortable about it.

I have met a couple people who were in cults. One of them was the lead nurse at the local hospital… They seemed pretty off.
Cults prey on people who are productive/wealthy, but there are plenty of vulnerable people who are productive/wealthy. It isn’t as simple as them wanting to do good.
This woman’s cult experience, doesn’t sound very cultish. If you were able to agree to kick the leader out and dissolve the organization, I kind of doubt anyone was under that tight of control… Just sounds like a extremist political movement. The leader wasn’t saying she is a god with all the answers. They were just try hard Marxists during the 70s XD

I wonder how often while doing research, she finds an organization that looks like an cult, but upon deeper inspection finds it to be benign. Anybody can end up in a cult. They start out being very subtle & making at lot of sense. The changes are very gradual. Some people are more susceptible to joining than others. Typically people who are lost, looking for something like a purpose or community. So I do my best to learn how to identify such things

There’s only one concrete difference between cult and religion that I can think of: how mainstream it is. Once a “cult” reaches enough popularity to become part of a nation’s culture, it somehow becomes a “religion”.
The difference she mentioned about religions not monitoring everything you do is only because people nowadays are more aware of the oppression big religions can cause (even the religious), so they’d get too suspicious if those religions started forcing conformity more aggressively. But that’s exactly what religions like the catholic church used to do hundreds of years ago when people were less aware, and you can bet that many religious leaders out there are salivating to bring back strict orthodoxy so they can monitor every aspect of your life like the “good old days”.

Another possible difference I forgot to mention is that religions tend to be older than cults. But that still ties into my above point. People tend to assume newer cults/religions are just the ramblings of a mad-man, but will give the benefit of the doubt to older ones because “if people have been following it for hundreds of years, then there must be some value in it right?”. A cult/religion’s age helps give it more familiarity and social acceptance, so the difference between the two still concerns how mainstream or “normal” they are in people’s eyes.

A comparison I’ve heard for getting into a cult is that it’s like an abusive relationship. Nobody wants to be in an abusive relationship, nobody signs up to join an abusive relationship, and you don’t realize until you are leaving or have left that it was actually an abusive relationship. The human mind is very weak and easy to manipulate so literally anybody could join a cult, just like anyone could get into an abusive relationship. Idk how accurate this is but it really helped me understand how someone could join a cult… plain and simply, it doesn’t seem like a cult when you start. Just like an abusive relationship doesn’t look like an abusive relationship when you start.

Because of this, by the time you’ve joined, you have to sell a nearly impossible amount of products that you probably won’t sell and thus you’ll lose money.
