Agnes is great in this talk, very genuine… A lot of “could” & “should”… But the nature of humans will always prevail within human creations, especially when social & financial elements are involved… My concern is inclusivity becoming a sales pitch, forced, disingenuous, and leading to a tribal behavior called toxic inclusivity, in which the quest to prove & maintain inclusivity credentials online, becomes gamified; creating new bigotries’ that seep into the real world… Humans, after all, do love to compete in teams…

Agnes, your love for Minecraft and passion really shows through in this talk and your Minecraft Live talk about the atmosphere of the new birch forests and Mangroves in 1.19, such a shame the latter didn’t happen as discussed. Hopefully it will in the future. Hopefully you will have enough power and influence to ensure Java Minecraft isn’t abused by Microsoft who don’t have the best record. I predict within 5 years Minecraft will become a subscription model, i hope i am wrong. Oh I loved your outfit, especially those boots!

Metaverse or Minecraft specifically got me through the Pandemic. When social interactions were restrained, the game was a representative escape from reality by building our own reality. Finding passionate souls sharing the same dreams as yours is invaluable. We’re not only building coded blocks, but we’re building love and forging friendships.

Exactly!! Big Tech comes in talking about “the” metaverse like it’s this new futuristic concept, yet games have had metaverses for a long time. Even before the internet as we know it, people came together in LAN parties to play in a “metaverse” together, and even before that you could say that playing roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons, people created imaginary “metaverses.” It’s definitely not a new concept, and Agnes did an excellent job at explaining this and why there can’t be just one metaverse, when there’s already tons of metaverses that exist.

There are two things I don’t fully agree with, here:
First, she calls the worlds / experiences that are being built in Minecraft “Metaverses”. I would suggest to reserve that term for the platforms, like Minecraft, Roblox, etc. but I acknowledge there are people that use the term like that as well.
Second, it felt a bit weird to me that she talked about how there should not be one big Metaverse platform and then goes on to talk about a Metaverses future where almost everything is built in Minecraft.
I mean, it’s not like MC is open source, compatible with open standards and protocols etc. Minecraft is a product by one of the biggest for-profit companies in the world, let’s not forget that.
Independently from those points, I agree with most of the things said. And I have to agree that MC is probably the one platform that is the closest to a desirable future of the Metaverse we have today.

Your only going to be able to prevent monetary gain the primary motive for so long. Eventually it’s going to be too tempting to pass of money. Also, do we really want our young generation to be even more inclined to be hooked up to a machine for most of their day? I like how you market the idea of building your own world as something positive and uplifting, but the side effects will be far from that. I understand your worry, but there are some things that technology will never replace, also we can use these metaverses to teach young and old people alike concepts (for example, I know a lot of people that are into engineering thanks to Minecraft and it’s redstone mechanics) We have the personal responsibility to teach the future generations how to consume media in a healthy way
