Solution, retrofit all homes with a system like Tesla’s solar turning whole cities into basically its own power plant. If one home does offline, the others pick up the load and to a bigger point, one home doesn’t take down a whole city.. whereas the current large power plant system, if it goes down, everything goes down.

Unfortunately they will need significantly more amount of batteries to be off the grid and winter times are very cold or some devices can’t be used offgrid….. with everything getting connected to Internet these days its only going to get worse and even tesla won’t be unvulnerable

Yeah, even without going into specifics, the piece just highlighted what went wrong & why… rather than how it happened & what steps have to be taken to prevent it.
How it happened? Likely because they introduced remote management & control systems which became vulnerable to external coopting of the system.
How to prevent it? Improve cyber security or better yet, isolate the system better from the rest of the Internet.

This attack was against a fuel source affecting transport, not power grids. Address the fuel source attack. How about more pipelines, and more refineries? They have been blocked for ideological reasons. How about more nuclear power plants? All of those solutions reduce total emmitions and reduce risk buy increasing the number of sources and delivery.
This report conflated the electrical power grid with this fuel delivery attack to introduce the argument for “green” power generation. Those green sources are just as vulnerable to attack if their control systems are not hardened against cyber attacks as other control systems. That solution is not new electrical power generation; but new control systems for the plants we have now.

Why would I listen to an analyst telling me that a modern oil pipeline is a complex system requiring elaborate safety and control system based on er, those newfangled ‘computer’ things. If it were important, you wouldn’t just see guys who don’t explain anything just accuse. You would also hear solutions not threats. You don’t put your gold in Times Square – (World Wide Web).

This video fails to answer the title question and goes on redirect attention to an entirely different problem. This is a blatant demonstration that political goals are being put ahead of public needs. Renewable energy has the intrinsic need/problem of storage. Rather than admit, fix, or even recognize this problem, blame is always transferred in every news story to fossil fuels.
I don’t point this out to take sides, I point this out as a warning. The politicians are dedicated to failure. Build your own storage/offline capabilities!

Not all cell phone towers have been in any kind of active use and with the potential of being sleepers waiting to be activated for cyber attack use. I haven’t heard any updates since that became first reported as existing around military bases in the U.S.
