You know if you *add* carbon into the carbon cycle you melt glaciers, start forest fires, create water scarcity, increase the severity of storms and hurricanes… oh yeah you also create deserts. The Sahara is growing in size, look it up. The notion that carbon capture is bad only follows if you are completely ignorant to the massive co2 pollution happening across our planet.

There won’t be trees left , if carbon capture takes off .
They will use it as an excuse to land clear .
We no longer need nature to clean up , big brother has you covered , we stick it under ground now and charge the price of doing it to you .
That forest you like to camp in , is now another farm of some sort because the land has been cleared .
The land was more beneficial as a farm and a carbon capture plant .

The problem with this is that is does not actually solve climate change. You still giving a reason to continue burning and emitting these greenhouse gases. The problem with environmental problems is instead of getting to the root of the problem and preventing it from happening in the first place, people like to just put a cap on it while the mess is still happening underneath. It doesn’t solve anything, it just hides it. And if this technology gets popular, I can only imagine this turning into a billion dollar company and incentivize other companies to pollute even more so that this carbon capture industry makes more money. In my opinion, this does not work. This does not actually solve climate change or the many injustices happening against people. If you want real change, we need to get to the root of the problem, decrease our emissions in the first place THEN WE WONT NEED CARBON CAPTURE. also TREES AND PLANTS DO ‘CARBON CAPTURE’. why are we relying on technology when we already have a natural system that does that job! for all of humanity and before, the ocean and trees have stored carbon but because of climate change and deforestation, the carbon that was stored in the ground and ocean are being released! bruuhh c’mon the natural environment is supposed to be doing their job but we are destroying it. we don’t need this carbon capture technology, we need our natural environment.

Carbon capture technology is bourgeois propaganda predicated on the notion that it’s impossible to abolish the profit motive that is causing these corporations to destroy the Earth.
No thanks.
I’m on board with the irrefutable science that says we should seize the means of production, force companies to stop polluting by running them in the public interest, and solve the climate crisis by solving the capitalism crisis.

The price of building this sort of rubbish will be added to the price of the product .

That is $26 US .per ton of carbon .
The average person in the US is said to be creating 16 ton per year .
That’s $ 416 a year that will be added to your bills every year .
When you buy fuel , steel , power , cars maybe even some food processors .

Sadly its not that easy to just hide away the CO2, neither is it cheap to capture it. Also its hard to predict what happens when you pump tons of CO2 gas into the rocks, potential hazards are things like earthquakes etc

Really? Emissions are increasing and much of the CO2 emissions is distributed in fossil cars and central heating systems and defies capture. This presentation is lacking on how much additional energy is needed to pump CO2 into the ground. Clue it is about a 1/4 and 1/3 extra energy and that is just from a desk study.
Here’s a quicker method, a ban on new fossil cars from 2022 and start building electric or compressed air buses instead. Half the population lives in cities and need better public transport and reductions in air pollution.

If you compress whole atmosphere to the density of water, then its only 10 meters deep. 10 meters! When you put it like this, it’s not unthinkable to believe that humans are capable of changing CO2 amounts in atmosphere, because it’s tiny.

4-7Gt? The IPCC said we needed 660Gt storage in their 2018 Reports, and already predicted we now need much more than that in their draft modelling for the 2022 Reports. Would love a clarification on what he meant here. For the record, I’m an environmental scientist studying our available tech options.

February 1, 2021 at 11:42 am
Because
1. There are already programs in place to give people more control over their reproduction
2. Population growth is not the driver of climate change. Greenhouse gases are.
Douglas Bell
February 1, 2021 at 1:46 pm
You are right but reducing population is unresolvable. It is a bigger issue and it is the driver for climate change. A few aboriginals with camp fires, even undertaking land management burn offs didn’t cause climate change. It needed the industrial revolution, capitalism and population growth.
ucsbgirlie18

Carbon capture is the logical answer to climate control, weather the climate is warming or cooling. Unfortunately politicians have hijacked the issue and using it to gain control over their people. Truth is, global cooling is the real threat; capture that carbon now to help control warming, release it later when global cooling (far more invidious future threat) is occurring. Since the libtards are forcing the world to leave that life saving carbon trapped in the earth, it cannot help us in the future. Crops thrive in a warmer climate, they will die in a cold one. Seems elementary to me.

@Flying RC then no pipeline, no heat, no jobs, no income and they still get $110 billion x 20yrs. This is ridiculous. Emissions contain more than CO2. Things that are poisonous and things that create acid that would be worse than anything acid rain could muster. It would be much more concentrated and extremely corrosive and in the ground, not good for anything environmental. You can’t burn carbon without having the same carbon left afterwards.

Biofuel in place of coal and gas is alternative in many counries. Unfortunate that politicians have little interest in supporting such movements.
Douglas Bell
February 1, 2021 at 1:19 pm
Biofuel burns and releases carbon. We have to get to zero emissions so biofuel shouldn’t be seen as an alternative or even a stop gap. We need to move to clean renewables.
Australian Govt would like to muddy the water with coal fired energy with carbon capture and with gas generation and even some bio fuel but we are lucky the uptake of PV on houses is very high, the State governments are setting zero emission goals with strategies and private industry is taking the challenge forward. Fortesque recently announced they will build a green hydrogen steel mill in the Pilbara region and they are converting all their ore trucks and trains to run on amonia producing waste emissions of nitrogen and water. Feds still pushing for coal mines but banks wont lend for them and insurance companies wont cover them.
Tomas Antanas
February 3, 2021 at 11:17 am
@Douglas Bell agre, biofuel has zero emisions, but I’m talking more abaut short rotation plantatiom. It saves forests, replace gas and coal also on lands where plantations are growing farming activities stops.
I know that there is some carbon captured in the roots of plants and it stays there at least for plantation liftime not shorter than 21 years.
Samuel Christian
January 31, 2021 at 2:50 am
Carbon capture can be accelerated if it can be profited by businesses and it’s already been proven that companies are able to compress the carbon into diamonds , an incentive for many mining and manufacturing companies since instead of mining for diamonds, we can just make them through compressed carbon capture
Douglas Bell
February 1, 2021 at 1:36 pm
nothing for nothing. Extreme pressure and heat required to compress carbon to form a diamond. This requires a lot of energy. Energy comes from where? At the moment much comes from coal.
Samuel Christian
February 1, 2021 at 1:51 pm

Like ethanol in the past, carbon capture is almost always greenwashing that leads to higher fossil emissions. Like the employment argument, these schemes invariably have the opposite net effect of what they advertise. Alberta uses “CCI”, technology to force otherwise unrecoverable fossil from underground by burning bitumen that otherwise would never have been extracted, to pump back into the ground and fluidize hydrocarbons for extraction. This sad sham is the last thing we really need. We need in the 119 months remaining to 2030 to curtail fossil emitting extraction and trade licenses and permits to zero. Please, please, please stop giving consideration to this form of snake oil.

Carbon capture in the form of gas is very flawed. There is no way of ensuring that it will remain where it is pumped.
Humans have been destroying carbon capture systems and releasing sinks for centuries, trees are very efficient carbon capture systems.
Wasting energy on trying to capture carbon from fossil fuel engines (including power stations) is a diversion to converting our economies to using renewable energy and producing clean steel using green hydrogen or direct electric furnaces with required carbon added to the steel when molten, removing the need to use pie-in-the-sky carbon capture.
To save an environment that will sustain humans will require carbon capture but carbon removed from the atmosphere, not carbon released from burning additional fossils.
