“Slang” that we also use…”leftie” vs “righty” That refers to our rotation of jumps and spins. Most skaters are counterclockwise (they rotate to the left), so they land their jumps and exit their spins on their right foot (hence righty). For those who rotate to the right are known as clockwise skaters are known as lefties, as they land their jumps and exit their spins on their left foot (hence lefty).

I skate in Auras too & it’s the coolest molding process. The carbon fiber is soft, like toilet paper & you have to let it cool for a full 24 hours so it doesn’t rip. Then it’s like the stiffest thing you’ve ever skated in. So weird.
@hockeygrrlmuse
February 10, 2026 at 8:04 pm
Okay that sounds amazing but – 24 hours??? Do you have to sleep in them??? I’ve had several pairs of hockey skates baked but it was nowhere near that intense.
@Laybackloser
February 10, 2026 at 8:13 pm
@hockeygrrlmusehaha no! They get wrapped in cellophane/saran wrap to lock the heat in while it molds to your foot, you have to wait about 20-30 mins, then the tech takes the plastic off, you sit a bit longer depending on how warm they are, then once they’re relatively cool, you can take them off, but you can’t skate in them for 24 hrs just to make sure they’re 100% cool. Auras aren’t like the stiff leather or synthetic materials other skates use. The carbon fiber gets a lot hotter & cools a lot slower so it can warp & be damaged if you manipulate it while its still warm. I got to visit the Aura booth at nationals & tell them my thoughts since they were collecting feedback. The founder was sooo nice.

Beautiful explanations, wow!! I used to love Kurt Browning’s artistry. Magnificent. I’m so happy to see such artistry melded with technical abilities now. When the quad was first accomplished, it seemed like the skaters who could do the quad were so boring to watch. Little creativity and grace in their movements. Now the artists are back on the ice.

1 do skaters usually watch the other skaters’ performance while waiting for their turn?

Thank you Max for shouting out the 2002 Salt Lake City GOAT men. Pleshenko and Yagudin were bonechillingly magnificent BOTH SP & LPs. To be quite honest, the best of them all at the 2002 Olympics was Yagudin’s Gala performance, Overcome. I literally cry tears every time I watch it, which is basically about once a week.
Just like Max has his Scott announcing memorized. I get a little shiver every time that lady announces “ladies and gentlemen Alexei YAGUUUUUDIN!”

I always wonder if there’s the friendly rivalry between figure skaters and hockey player and how often “Toepick” (i.e. “The Cutting Edge”) gets said after someone falls, in jest or as an insult?
@HeavenlyRaven_08
February 14, 2026 at 9:46 pm
Lol I don’t know if toepick gets said a la Cutting Edge but I can say that as a former competitive figure skater, there was SERIOUS, not just friendly rivalry between figure skaters & hockey players. Most of the time it was fighting for ice time. But also, in MN, hockey is football. And figure skating was often seen as secondary/looked down on. There’s also real gender/sexuality pain where figure skating, seen as a more feminine sport, would kind of get the shorter end of the stick (in ice time, funding, etc…) and also hockey bro culture could be not just annoying, but misogynistic and homophobic and a lot of hockey boys would make fun of boys who figure skate and sling out slurs.

9:05 this response is why comments about the 2026 men’s fs were so annoying! The skaters are absolutely and validly judged on what they do that particular day but it DOESN’T mean that they’re still not phenomenal performers every other day. If that makes sense?

Why do they waste so much time going around the track while the music plays, instead of just jumping like rabbits and collecting points?

Max was fantastic! He should do more of this, because his ability to explain to the non-skaters and non-fans is exceptional.
(also, love the different photos you pulled out of other skaters, especially his friends Valentina Plazas and Maximiliano Fernandez.)

The trauma of losing his parents will last forever though..in his alone time he probably has really tough moments. That being said, he seems so strong, grounded, and committed to make them super proud.

Omg if you wanna overcome the mental doubt of jumping….just commit to the fall!!! A harness lesson is so expensive. If you just keep falling and couldn’t land, it means you haven’t jumped enough. Jump jump jump. Do more off ice. A really good tell is three perfect landings in a row. That’s why figure skating is like the winter sport version of gymnastics. Stick your landing.

Maxim has a Russian name, but neither looks nor speaks like a Russian) you don’t see it very often)) but I agree with some comments that he would be a great coach!

I don’t know the world of figure skating, I can only appreciate it as an onlooker. This man explained things so well that a child could understand it. Only a master can do that. I look forward to the rest of this man’s career and seeing where he goes.

Maxim, you are a wonderful example of an athlete who not only shows grace and beauty on the ice, but intelligence and wisdom off the ice as well. Wishing you all good luck and best wishes as you pursue your Olympic dream and beyond. I know your parents are smiling down on you. ❤️

I always dreamed of doing figure skating but in my country we don’t have ice and the only rings that exist are waaaaay far and expensive so I just watch everything I can about it… I’m also kinda old for it right now, but I’ll always love it with all my heart. It was really a pleasure watching him in the Olympics, he looks like the kindest soul I’ve ever seen

I really love hearing the response to prefering one gold medal or five silver. Those kinds of questions help me understand what kind of drive and motivations athletes have. And either answer definitely has valid reasons.

So proud of you Max. You are a wonderful skater, and a wonderful coach. You’re carrying on the history of great coaches such as Maribel Vincent Owen and Frank Carroll, and your own precious parents. The young skaters you train are very fortunate indeed.

When my mom was competing at nationals, compulsories were still apart of a skater’s score. I believe it counted as 1/3. It was unbelievably boring to watch, precision figure 8’s, while judges observed with their clipboards. Mom was grateful they got rid of them – for bad TV, mostly. Who wants to watch that?
On the other hand , these boring show of skills might further reduce the chances of favouritism.

This was so enjoyable and great to see. Good questions and answers. Max seems to be a great young man. I so enjoyed watching and learning. My one question is when they ‘pop’ and jump or spin what causes it, how do they know that theyre not going to be able to do it, you know? I just learned the term pop, and want to understand how the skater feels and knows and then decides to not attempt.
