Not very informative. You talked around all the issues. Trump tends to “slightly” exaggerate?? 0h, come on! The man is nothing but exaggerations and lies. You mention the fact that corporate greed is hurting “children and animals” and that corporations have been “lionized” in America. You say that’s a huge problem. Yes, and Trump encourages corporate greed through massive corporate tax cuts. He receives much support through corporate billionaires like Musk and Thiel. Why wasn’t this mentioned? Trump just increases the huge gap between the very rich 10% and the rest of us.

As to the assassination attempts on Trump, those involved his own supporters. Maybe some people are looking for an excuse for violence and unrest following the election. It isn’t coming from the Democrats.

Just vote for the one you think has a bigger heart, which is obviously not to be taken literally. ^^
In the end, the president has people advising him/her, and it’s important that whoever makes the final decision has a big heart to do the right thing for the majority of the population.

Imported labor is largely in the agricultural sector which is seasonal. If wages went up in agg, it would make more sense for young people. Particularly 17-20 year olds, who are still figuring their lives out. If they have an opportunity to work hard for a summer or 3 while they decide what to do next, they can get off to a better start. Food prices will rise in the near term but automation is driving down prices in the long term. More importantly more income for young people is more stimulatory for the rest of the economy than remittances. Remittances aren’t even that good for the recipient economy because they don’t get the value that was generated by the labor.

  53. @undaware

    October 14, 2024 at 11:01 am

The left right battle just keeps us from fighting our real enemy…..government capture by corporate money. And, half the country wants to weaken government further because government is failing us, but government is the only force powerful enough to counter corporate capture. Maine is voting to limit contributions to $5000 per person, basically nullifying Citizens United/Speech United in that state. Other states are looking at it too. It wasn’t always this bad. Government used to do more of the people’s work. Enough people are really struggling now that they just need a champion…a lifeline. And economic stats don’t matter, since they only highlight the frustration poeple feel when they’re being told things are fine, but they can’t rest one bit or they get trampled. Frankly, so many people are hurting that I would be surprised if Trump lost. Unfortunately, I don’t think he has the answers. Yeah we’ll get our border sorted out, which is nice. Beyond that I think it’s pretty up in the air. There are so many things about the right that are contradictory to the struggle. Like more privatization, which is more corporate capture. It just doesn’t add up. Anyway, he’s making the promises that regular folks believe in. I hope he can deliver and it’s not just another bait and switch.

The world will deal with either Presidency. The world has fallen into the trap of A) assuming experience = effectiveness B) buying into the hyperventilation of the US ‘press’. Trump would be nowhere near the threat to democracy – the evidence was always flimsy and no-one is really buying the wofl-cries any more. Harris would be nowhere as process-smooth as is being speculated – her own staffing has been toxic. The big question about Harris is how she would handle a crisis. The few data points we do have do not point to a confident, assured approach.

This is a rose-colored, cherry-picked assessment. Ian claims Trump would end the war in Ukraine by helping it get into NATO. Trump hates NATO and has railed against it for years. He tried to pull the US out during his last term but got out-flanked by hawkish aids. That won’t happen in a second term, because his top requirement of staff going forward is loyalty. So, if Trump wants to pull the US out of NATO, why would he help Ukraine get in?

He argued that Trump would be hawkish on Russia. He forgot how Trump publicly stated he trusted Russia over the American intelligence service in its assessment that Russia had been trying to interfere in the US election. Furthermore, Trump has fawned over autocrats like Putin, Xi, Orban, and Kim Jong Un. Imagine a world in which the US aligns with autocratic nations, rather than Europe. It would be a very different place.

Ian’s assessment seems to see a Harris versus a Trump administration as an apples-to-apples comparison, when really its apples to something that isn’t even fruit.

I’m having some of the same reaction but i do think Bremmer is honest. He’s not a domestic policy person. And he’s not into politics. He’s about foreign policy. So while Trump may be disastrous for domestic circumstances i think Bremmer is trying to look only at what actually happened in the past to predict the future. That said, i think he grossly underestimates the degree to which Trump’s future will have more to do with who pleases him than with what he’s done in the past.

Ian Bremmer always provides great insights into US and world affairs. After listening to this podcast the importance of back-up plans become even more important. The US is to big to turn on a dime and change in this country takes decades. Getting a residency visa in another country and even a second citizenship is becoming more important. Even working class middle income Americans would benefit from having a plan B in another country.

Once you break apart Trump’s plan for mass deportations, it becomes evident that there is a very real probability that Hispanic American citizens might be legally obliged to carry proof of citizenship everywhere they go no matter how many generations their families have been in the US.. A plan B in another country for Hispanic American citizens is especially important for us.

I’m not sure of how much attention he have to what Harris has told about the people in her cabinet where she several times and resently last week told she would have republicans in her cabinet for a wider and brighter view of the will of the American people, because she have strongly told she will be a president for all Americans and want info from different sides of politics and the country. Talking about Bidens experience, I would say she also has good exprrience but with a much stronger and strichter politics on the border, where she was working with the most conservative Republican politicans and the border controle agents for a strong border bill which was endorset of the border patrols. A strong border bill which Trump made his friends in the Republican party kill because he would not have the border fixed, he wanted the people to suffer one year and use it as a main issue in his campaign, and just come and fix it as elected.
But this is the problem, it’s importent to fix things when you have the political will for it, the border has been an issie for decades, no one have collected the right political will before Harris made it one year ago, untill Trump killed it fir his own best.

The problem that Ian has with this interview is that it is difficult to compare the policies of Trump and Harris. On the one hand he has based his views on Trump by mentioning what Trump has said and done. On the other hand when it comes to Harris it is more difficult to determine actual policies due to the fact that she seems to have no clear policies only to state that she is “not Joe Biden”, e.g. immigration, fracking etc. Btw I’m from Australia and have no personal interest in the outcome of this election, but I see that China, as we speak, is presently carrying out war games against Taiwan. Maybe I do have an interest in this election after all.

Ian’s descriptions of what might happen in Ukraine are all unworkable. I’m no foreign policy expert but the little that I know, neither scenario is at all realistic. Why would either side stop fighting at this point? Russia being given the option to restrengthen and rearm through a loose treaty without no nato membership ultimately brings WWIII and puts Americans at direct risk. I’m pretty disappointed to hear such a naive take from a “foreign policy expert”.

He is a good speaker; however, his opinion on Trump and Harris are very biased. Harris is not prepared to be the leader of the world. Sen coons would be a very bad choices. On the Middle East he really doesn’t have a credible view. Biden has done a lot of bad ideas presented to Israel. He is somewhat correct on the south. He is wrong completely about Harris’s diplomacy. She is not in favor of Israel period.🎉

  114. @jacksalisbury-i5e

    October 16, 2024 at 1:16 pm

Ukraine is a big question. I don’t THINK Harris knoes enough about the world. I personally feel I know more information about the world diplomacy than she does.

  115. @jacksalisbury-i5e

    October 16, 2024 at 1:24 pm

His opinions on Russia could come to pass(Trump). Trump is an unknown how he would end the war. People are worried about his way of governing. Harris would be a globalist and would not be supporter of America first way. His idea of Putin agreeing to anything that makes Russia lose face is probably correct as much as I don’t see it coming to pass

    Many great points and insights.
A counterpoint to most of the positive credits given to Trump during his first term (ex. weapons to Ukraine, Nordstream 2, etc.): correctly points out that Trump takes interest in a few things and leaves most decisions and policy particulars to whomever he has hired on gut read of them or long loyalty (notwithstanding lack of relevant experience). Bremerton recognizes and highlights this but gives him credit for certain “decisions”/actions taken during his admin… you can’t have it both ways

  119. @JerryNordstrom

    October 16, 2024 at 4:51 pm

I do like that Ian has a strong understanding of the inside baseball of politics and logistics. His positioning is clearly one sided.
We can boil down the differences to this: Trump will control who gets hired, what policies takes priority, he will make all decisions in his own way. Harris will be told who to hire, what to do, when to do it and why she needs to do it.
