Physicist Breaks Down Superhero Physics From Movies & TV | WIRED
Physics professor Rhett Allain breaks down amazing feats of physics from superheroes in movies and television and explains how accurate their depictions really are. How realistic are “superhero” landings? Is the kinetic energy suit from “Black Panther” possible? Even with superpowers, is it physically feasible for Superman to lift a large building? Rhett Allain is…

June 12, 2020 at 11:22 pm
they always do that. they just call it “xyz expert” instead of the actual profession name. it’s likely that is simply to make it easier at a glance to check what the videos is about even for people that don’t know what exactly that profession is. obviously rather unnecessary in this case, but just saying they probably only did it because they’ve already been doing it in their other videos

I’m surprised that he didn’t mention the fact that there are lizards that are able to run across the water as well. I think the blood spatter could be sort of a wrap around effect. Similar to how if a car drives past you quickly, the wind blows in the opposite direction of the car.

Excellent vid! But I’m not sure Dr. Allain’s comment on Iron Man’s hand thrusters being more stable because they’re above his center of mass is correct. This is called the “Pendulum Rocket Fallacy”. Search that on Google or YouTube for more info.
His points about the hands being able to aim the thrust (gimbal) easier than the feet and extend outwards for more torque when rotating seem to make a lot of sense. Just not the pencil analogy or the hands being more naturally stable because they’re above the center of mass. That’s the fallacy, I think.
Edit: This YouTube video on the Pendulum Rocket Fallacy seems to address this very thing:

Nitpicky I know, but the one that always bugged me was when Tony Stark escapes the compound in the first movie in his first suit, the height and rate of speed as he falls back down should have killed him as he landed on the sand or at least broken his back as it did with Rhodey as the cushioning of the suit was minimal at best.

June 16, 2020 at 1:09 am
There were some kind of strange points in this video, to me.
The Wonder Woman part. Who would think her arm would be pushed back by the bullet impact? Regular people aren’t sent flying by bullets, so it would obviously not be able to overcome a magical bracer on an Amazonian superheroine.
The idea about super strength heroes needing to worry about force upon their own bodies would be true if we also care that they aren’t punching with efficient, structurally sound technique. But that’s a bigger discussion about martial arts in fiction. Really, it’s logical to just assume their super bodies can handle the impact of a super punch.
And I don’t think Cap spun the hammer that many times just to look cool – he was spinning it faster and faster. I think anyone would watch that scene and understand that he was going for a lotta damage.

I would love to see that bit about force pairs actually explored better in movies, especially in a show like the Defenders because it’s not over the top.
I also love that he discusses realism but is willing to give many of them a pass because it’s entertaining. Superman carrying a building? It’s so bad that it completely destroys my enjoyment of the movie. That’s great in cartoons but not in a movie like Justice League. Superhero landings? I have no problem with that. It’s still within the realm of possibility, even if it’s not necessary and it adds to the feel of the movie. The backwards blood splatter in The Boys adds to the story. This is how it is with everything, shows have to walk the line of not requiring too much suspension of reality while still being cinematic. That being said, I think that most of the time it’s a false choice fallacy. I think Hollywood underestimates how cool realism really can be

“What if you had real world physics in superhero movies, it might not be that fun”
I disagree with that, honestly. I think it’s more interesting when people spend a lot of time thinking about how superpowers would interact with real life physics. One of my favorite book trilogies, The Grimnoir Chronicles by Larry Correia, does this aspect really well… The characters using their powers have to cope with real world physics, and some characters are very resourceful with their powers. As such, 2 people with the same power can wind up using it way differently. I think that helps give the characters a lot more depth and it makes the action scenes a lot more interesting.
Can also see this in Avatar: The Last Airbender where characters who are the same kind of benders can wind up using their bending way differently. To the point where it can even impact various subcultures, and it gives the world more flair.

He doesn’t know any equations for ricochet so he just uses recoil even though that has nothing to do with the scene and then he refuses to do any of math on the rest, only providing the equation occasionally. I’d give my recommendation for attending Southeastern Louisiana University for physics at about a 4/10.

The flash and sparks of a bullet hitting metal comes about because that bullet is disintegrating into little drops of molten led.

Funny story on some eastern martial arts, the power of your punch is based on pull into the ground with your strike. Like when you torque your hips you’re trying to pull up the ground with your legs. You do this, because it forces your alignment to the ground to make sure your strike isn’t applying an improper amount of force on your joints. So you aren’t throwing weight out, but just forcing a path for the impact to take. So perfect apparently for super strength. Lol

Okay so for the scene with the man running through the girl i have a possible explanation for why the blood hits the boyfriend. Now i dont know the physics on how he is able to go through and splatter the girl but once he has he would likely be pushing the blood forward like the physicist says (im obviously not a physicist his word in this case is worth more than my own) but it would make sense that he is going so fast that the blood that is pushed forward he either runs through and throws backwards or it is caught in the draft formed by his running and thrown back into the boyfriend (think highspeed of a bullet flying through the air how you can physically see the bullet splitting the air and forcing it into kinda a cone shape behind it)

Also for the part of captain america swinging the hammer wouldn’t you want to swing it around multiple times rather than just once, so as to allow the hammer to build up momentum and moment of inertia so that you have the maximum amount of force possible upon impact with a TH a.k.a. Thanos Head. Also by having a quicker rotation of the hammer wouldn’t it be more likely/easier to hit a TH as the hammer head is in the “sweet spot” for maximum impact more frequently

“Tuck, and Roll.” You have to be careful, and spread your knees, so they don’t hit you in the chest, and knock the wind out of you. The kind-of mistake you only make once. (I used to do Free-Running, you tuck, and roll in that a lot.)

22:03 Here’s the shot that made me scratch my head. Okay, maybe you could argue that the beam didn’t cut through the keel, because it was underwater, and the water cooled the metal. However, in this shot, it’s clearly split in half, below the water-line. That ferry is sinking. No matter how much webbing you add down the middle, missiles stuck to the side, and welding it above the waterline. That water is rushing in, and the ferry is sinking, before you can save it.

Terminal Velocity: Iron Man II. In the opening, he does a similar stunt, jumping out of an airplane over the Stark Expo. However, he dives head first, with his Repulsors thrusting the entire time, for several seconds before flipping over for the Superhero Landing onstage. I don’t care how much Armor you’re wearing, he had to be doing at least 200 MPH (About the Terminal Velocity in the head-down position, without Repulsor Engines) when he hit that stage. He’s dead, and I don’t know what that stage is made out of, but it’s got to be tougher than the armor that hit it at upwards of 200 MPH.

This is great. I like how he can accept the physics in the alternate universes so easily. I will say that the Superman building thing has never been explained in movies, but I believe it has been explained in the comics somewhere. Someone more well-read on Supes feel free to correct me if I misstep, but I believe it was explained when the Cadmus Project was studying his body. Kryptonians had psionic powers which made him able to fly and when he picked up a large object like a building he was unconsciously holding a psychic barrier around the building to keep it together. You see in plenty of places where he just punches through buildings like they are sandcastles so it makes sense that when he’s actually trying to pick up the whole thing thats how he doesn’t just launch through. Again, the films have never brought this up and I rarely hear people talking about it in his list of powers so maybe I am not remembering correctly.

superman has a bio electrical field that
manipulates theoretical particle graviton, which makes him fly by effecting the space time fabric,
that is why he is so fast cause bending space = bending time,
also it stabilizes the masses he lifts so they don’t crumble on small point of contact.

Actually, I’m disappointed that he didn’t analyze some of Batman’s weirder physics. The the very least he could’ve tried to explain the “go after Rachel after Joker drops her” scene in “The Dark Knight.”
The other thing. In “The Official Guide to the Science of Superman” it’s suggested that Superman doesn’t actually have X-Ray vision, but instead is able to focus his eyes on different spectrums of light that can see through skin and muscle. X-rays aren’t the only ones that can do that.

love the comedic editing. just a few small issues
basketball/medicine ball throw on the ice, you its NOT the same momentum, it IS the same energy (I am thinking this is just a slip of words)
Capt. America dive and Dash, Surface tension was thrown completely out of the conversation it seems. there is a layer of water on teh top that does now “flow” like the rest underneath unless it is broken first. this is what helps water skiers stay above the water is the momentary surface tension. if you are skiing on complete chop (broken surface water) it becomes much harder to stay afloat. that and the introduction of mixing with the water. which the Capt. America dive would be like hitting a solid surface at that height, TV would be approx 120ish mph, maybe a bit higher as he is by the books, more dense (more weight for volume).
the punches….. when you punch something it doesnt instantly rebound. it takes time to slow down the mass, if hitting a wall that wont move the energy flows back into the object, but still not all. when hitting something that moves, like a head or a body, if they are not moving at high speed the other way, the energy is transferred in the direction of travel. otherwise bullets/arrows etc. would just bounce off. SOME of the energy is pushed back into the hand/arm etc but it is NOT equal amounts as it is dissipated by the mass of the target.

The comic books explain why Superman can do things like lift buildings. He has a bioelectric field around his body (thats what keeps him invulnerable) that he then extends around whatever he touches, allowing it to maintain its structural integrity. That is also why he can catch people who are falling without them turning into soup.

That was all very obvious. I’m gonna break down ant-man physics because that one really got me thinking. He can change mass and/or momentum on command and also runs too fast for being so small. This is obvious, but what about his breathing. He needs the same amount of oxygen molecules to breathe (his molecules are closer together, he has the same amount of molecules when he’s small), so that’s about a small balloon of air he has to take in. His suit could have a system where the air molecules get compacted as he breathes in, and the reverse as he breathes out. But still that would be impossible for different reasons, one of which the small hole he breathes through would require an immense amount of force and would also create a jet stream of air. Try breathing through a very small hole, you’ll see.
Agria Arts Studio

I disagree with the final assessment, repeatedly spinning the hammer increases the momentum over a potentially infinite cycle until he needs to use it, essentially the same physics as in terminal velocity. That was pretty good Mr. Physics guy.
I could knock much larger people than me off their feet back when I was active in martial arts. I was 135 ils. Started with Hapkido and then many other things.
It’s a timing trick I saw in one of Bruce Lee’s books. He was excellent with body mechanics. It works great when you get it right.
You step back, just a tad, so that the other person will have to move toward you to do anything. You catch them in mid step, that lead foot has left the floor but not stepped down yet. Hit them hard anywhere up high above their center. They don’t have to make a big step, you just catch them the instant they start to move.
To them (I know) it will feel like that foot just tried to step on air. Your bottom half keeps going forward but your top half goes backwards, That foot goes straight out and you’re on your back. You have to have a good hard punch though.
One of the tricks to his punch is taking the weight off your lead foot on impact, you’re slightly leaned in so you get most of your weight behind the punch.
Stand next to a wall, arms length away in your boxing stance or whatever. One of your feet are usually in front one behind. Put your fist on the wall where you would throw your punch, arm extended. Raise that front foot. Don’t fall down. Feel how much weight went to your fist.
You don’t have to raise your foot off the ground, just take the weight off.
If it hurts your hand or knuckles to hold it there I’ll explain why he uses a “vertical” fist.

So the problem with this video is that the people who choose the clips don’t know physics, and the physicist doesn’t know comics, so there’s a disconnect between what he thinks he’s talking about and what the comic logic deals with. I know just enough about each to argue with everything (in the comfort of my own solitary living room! Not trying to say I know more. I can just hear the issue)

I disagree with his assessment of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.
Unless they were standing on an ice rink, they probably wouldn’t go flying backwards like he said. Instead, it’s more likely they’d just anchor themselves in place with their legs, as any human normally does when punching or throwing anything hefty.

my only complaint is that i don’t think he’s accounting for how much the human body will absorb those reaction forces, especially if say it’s a superhuman individual; yes, Luke and Jessica would have very strong internal reaction forces but similarly they have ludicrously strong muscles that could fire off and brace our heroes against this

15:50 Not exactly. Just “having a higher thruster” invokes the pendulum fallacy (really early rocket development, look it up, fascinating stuff). Rockets can’t be stabilized just by having thrusters placed higher up relative to the center of mass. This does not change the forces involved in any meaningful way. You still need a stabilizing force to counteract deviations and maintain balance (even having tailfins isn’t enough — unless they’re steerable control surfaces, you still aren’t guaranteed to fly straight). If anything, that’s what having the thrusters in the hands allows: Easier steering. The thrusters in his boots are most likely contributing the majority of the thrust but can do some steering as well (since people are used to taking a 1g force on their feet and legs while standing, and balance is maintained via the muscles in the feet, ankles, and legs anyway, so why not make use of preexisting skills?) while the hands are likely more useful for quick changes in orientation, and drift or translation control and stabilization when hovering, more than fine tuned maneuvering.
The rest of the video is spot on, but as a space and rocket enthusiast, I felt that mistake needed to be pointed out. 🙂

Same reason Homelander says he can’t save the plane in mid air..there’s nothing to stand on and he’d go right through the center of the plane. That would’ve made for a better clip than the justice league one honestly

You talk about “Gravitational Pull”, but in physics we know there is no such thing as pull, only push. Gravity is pushing you towards the Earth. Why do you say pull? Is it so you don’t have to explain the whole push part? Do physicists really say gravitational pull to each other? Sorry, a bit of a nitpick point, but it always annoys me when I hear “Gravitational Pull”.

For the iron man thing, wouldn’t everybody be fine until they land? They all have relatively the same velocity and don’t seem to be accelerating so would they still have to exert a force?

WAIT A MINUTE, 16:00 he’s wrong, it’s actually a super common misconception called the pendulum rocket fallacy, makes literally no difference to stability whether the centre of mass is above or below, but he deserves a pass since it’s an off the cuff question and literally everyone gets this one wrong. And he gets a half point for being correct about a wider thrust base helping.

Superman has bio electric aura enhanced with tactile telekinesis which explains why he can manipulate centre of g and redistribute it so that the objects he is in contact with do not fall over or break apart with immense force or while travelling at super speed. this applies to his ability to fly. the objects or people he carries/lifts should not break/die according to this law.

all of superman’s powers can be explained by his ability to absorb solar energy including the one above if you think about it. even his weirdest powers.

In the case of Superman lifting the building (going full nerd here), he has a vague additional power to his strength that seems to sort of generate a “force field” around objects he’s lifting, so he can do just this. I know it sounds like bs, but it’s a way they explained away the fact that he regularly lifts giant boats and stuff without them snapping in half, Titanic style. Not unlike the Flash’s “secret” ability to have a force field around himself and everyone he’s in contact with, so they don’t burn up due to friction when he’s running at super speeds.
It’s kind of a throwaway explanation by the writers, they invent an additional power to get around the physics problems. Just thought I’d throw that out there, since we’re going along with their powers “somehow” working here.
As for Superman fying at near light speed and catching a Lois Lane falling at terminal velocity right before she hits the ground, without slicing or vaporizing her body… I’m not sure.

I disagree with the needing to punch upwards part, the strength u can punch is determined by the impulse right? so only thing that effects it is velocity and mass and since they obv weren’t punching at super speeds it just means they are super heavy which means that they will see almost no recoil when punching those guys, movies seem to ignore this a lot they could just fix the physics by making all these super-strong characters heavy af and prove it with their surroundings, like a car lowering heaps when they hop in and stuff like that.

June 27, 2020 at 6:01 pm
4:37 and this is why I theorize that many of Superman’s abilities are psionic in nature. If he has tactile telekinesis, like his partial clone, Connor, then this feat wouldn’t be a problem. It makes sense that when his abilities first developed, he just assumed that he had super strength and flight, when he’s really moving objects or himself with his mind.

Ant man is the biggest offender…
He gets smaller, he gets denser, in one scene he breaks the ceramics by falling on it. on the other, he is riding an ant/interacting with stuff without it breaking.
His entire thing is described as “small mass hits hard” yet the movie always seems to “forget” it.
