Thanks for the great review. I’m just irrationally bitter that Apple is now dipping into this sport ugh also, subscription? I’ll stick to the established dive computers

The subscription model killed it for me, I prefer to use my shearwater computer that will last me more will cost less and will do way more including AI, Trimix ccr etc, let you choose gradient factors etc…. Besides shearwater you have garmin descent mk2i if you want a smart watch with diving capabilities
Erwin
November 29, 2022 at 11:59 pm
You always want a computer will not shut down at least 200ft, I case of a emergency you may need to get deeper. it Cozumel one of the best dives is to 130ft, but few divers exit deeper to 150ft if they are not putting attention,

Apple Watch Ultra: Never in my life.
Right now the best dive computers are the Shearwater Perdix 2 and the Shearwater Petrel 3. The Shearwater Teric if you must have a dive watch computer. The Shearwater Peregrine if you will only ever do recreational diving. The Garmin Mk2s if you must have a smartwatch/dive watch computer combo, and the Garmin Mk2i if you must have a smartwatch/dive watch computer combo that can keep track of your breathing gas.

I picked up an Apple Watch and used the “dive computer” as an excuse to buy one. The other features of the watch are nice, but I really want to use this for diving in Minnesota, and this seems like a good but not great all in one recreational diving watch.

Can the app track your location underwater using the compass and the entry point? or it just show the entry and exet points?

Why do you need a pass code on a watch?
Gadgety
November 29, 2022 at 7:02 pm
Truly excellent video and testing. Kudos for the 56 degree dive. Apple should make it optional to defeat the pass code nonsense during dives.

I am a big Apple fan and was eager to see the review. For me, the pluses: bright screen; long battery life; the post-dive data summary with easy integration into other Apple products; more visible warnings than most dive watches; vibration warnings. Cons: Don’t want to have my attention absorbed by having to enter a passcode or flip screens during a dive. Overall, I don’t dive frequently enough to justify buying the watch. I will continue to rent a standalone dive computer. If I did dive more I would still have an issue with the passcode and the need to rotate the crown. Better to have a press button instead but best of all is no need to engage with the watch at all with my hands. That is something to minimize for any piece of scuba equipment.

While I like the idea of using my existing wrist watch to log dives, I don’t know if I’d be able to trust a bloated, multi-feature OS like watchOS. For the sake of safety, reliability, and the fact that this is so new, I’ll be sticking with dedicated dive ‘puters.

$800? I don’t see the software cost as being much of a problem, but my dive computer was much less than that and has integrated air pressure and a computer upload link over USB. It also has a huge screen that is easy to read, and I prefer dive computers in the console attached to the air hose rather than on my wrist. I guess the advantage is you have a watch you can use for other sports and outdoors things, but it seems like it would be better to get a regular watch for that and a dive computer for diving. Also, I guess I have to admit that I don’t have an iPhone, so it wouldn’t work too well for me. Maybe at some point this will be something that could replace a regular dive computer.

How does the watch know the amount of air left in the tank?
BubbleF
November 30, 2022 at 2:11 am
it doesn’t buy a Garmin MK1, no subscription and it comes with transmitter
Eelco Hoenselaar
November 30, 2022 at 2:14 am
It doesn’t. You need your SPG for that.
For a dive computer to know the amount of air left in the tank you need a dive computer connected to your HP hose, or a wireless transmitter that can communicate with your dive computer. Oceanic has wireless transmitters, but the Apple watch isn’t set up to be able to communicate with them.

Apple
Apple Watch Ultra Series 2 (2023)
1. Will remove the password from dives. The risk of another diver stealing your watch is deemed minimal. Also the risk of a fish eating it, and another fisherman finding it and using it, is deemed minimal by Apple stakeholders.
2. Will support 50 meters extra depth, ontop of the existing one
3. Will have 25% larger battery capacity
4. Will include Drowning Detection calling emergency services if the user is fighting to stay afloat
5. Will include satellite connectivity.
6. Will include the new Chipset.
7. Will include new generation heart rate monitor (faster)
8. Will include new generation SpO2 blood oxygen monitor
9. Will include blood alcohol levels sensor, but in a basic format.
10. Will include a sleep score and a readiness score
11. Will expand the heart zones across the entire day and not only on a workout.

You can disable “Wrist Detection” if you know you’ll be wearing the Ultra over a wetsuit, that way it won’t keep asking you to enter the passcode

@Allen van Hellen yes, but it’s just a toggle in the Watch settings. Not a major issue.

As a professional diver I am NOT impressed yet. Perhaps the 2cond or 3rd rendition of this watch/dive computer will tick all the boxers. But right now its fine for someone that only dives once a year to like 30 ft max.

From my past Apple Watch experience, the passcode is complexly optional. It does eliminate the use of the wallet app tho.
Anthony Holland
December 1, 2022 at 12:34 am
@Kanon 08 It is, but assuming you want the code the rest of the time, this needs to be addressed.
Xiao Kris
December 1, 2022 at 11:17 am
The passcode is overridden as soon as you submerge in water and it goes into dive mode with or without the passcode. Assuming you have enabled it to auto-launch which it prompts you to do when first launching the app. But yeah no A.I. unfortunately. I have yet to use the air integration with my shearwater, but I plan to eventually. It does work quite well though, the screen is awesome underwater.

At 56 degrees in the pool, I would have gone in with the wetsuit!
I’ve always wanted an Apple Watch that you can dive with. I’ve seen lots of criticism that “I’d never trust that thing” or other similar complaints. I’m old enough to remember diving with dive tables, so computers have always been a “nice to have” for me but not required. These days the prices have come down to the point that everyone should have one. One thing about the Oceanic+ app is that it will always get better with future updates. Many dive computers are the same as the day you opened the box. I think auto logging of dives to your log book is a great feature…no need to do any kind of weird syncing. My main problem now is that I already own a stainless Series 7 my wife bought for me last year…and I can’t imagine paying another $800 for an upgrade so soon.

Thank you for the review! An Apple Watch as a Dive-Computer is very appealing to me.
The size and price tag are a bit large for my taste. Dealbreaker is a subscription fee for an advertised feature!

Lost me at when we have to pay a monthly subscription for a dice computer
Twizzlestix
December 1, 2022 at 6:11 pm
Who is going to pay a subscription for a dive app? As someone who taught scuba diving for years in Southeast Asia, theres not a chance I would pay a monthly fee for a dive computer function over just using my suunto computer. Not to mention most rec divers might only dive once or twice a year, so are they going to pay monthly for an app they use a few days out of the year? This is absolutely ridiculous and shows how out of touch apple is when it comes to the actual dive community. Also apple conveniently hid the fact this dive feature would be a paid app when they marketed the new watch.
