It was definitely challenging capturing three dimensional light objects on a 2D screen (our shooter John had a FUN time with this one!), but I have to say it was very cool to see this tech in person! Biggest question: Where do you want to see this used?

I wonder what the limitations are. If you put a panel on a flat table surface, would you be able to walk around the table and see the object, or do you need to be looking at or towards the panel to see it?

    • Toph Law

      October 7, 2021 at 10:33 pm

I can see this in operating theaters where student doctors can see their virtual patient projected over a digital operating table while others gather around to observe the work in real time…. or a team of engineers collaborating on a prototype much like what we saw in Favreau’s Iron Man film… all without the need to wear glasses.
Throwing in ultrasonic haptic feedback & AI/computer vision into the mix would allow the user to actually ‘feel’ the surface of the projected hologram & interact with it all without special glasses or gloves.
I can’t wait to see where the technology goes.

Definitely as soon as they can scale up beyond 125″ for not an unreasonable amount of money, I’d put one in my home cinema.

    • Oscar Swida

      October 8, 2021 at 8:30 am

@Nathan Heisey This display would definitely have the limitation you allude to. The image would not be able to leave the outline of the display. A good solution to that problem is simply to recess the virtual object deeper into the display.

This should be the future of Zoo’s, not because the animals are extinct, but so we don’t put animals in Zoo’s.
Well, of course also the occasional Tasmanian Tiger, Raptor flock or Dodo would be nice to see “live” like this.

One obstacle that cannot be overcome is creating black or dark colors. Regardless of how good these become they will always require controlled environments to be viewed properly. Just like a traditional projector. Otherwise, any light behind the hologram will be visible through the dark areas of the image. I’d love to be proven wrong but it’s still very cool.

Observations: 1. from the camera’s perspective, the chameleon looks flat. This seems to contradict their claim that it is a 3d object. 2. when you put your hand “through” it, it should have cast shadows. But it did not. This seems to suggest the chameleon was some type of illusion that was actually farther away from you than it seemed. 3. the explanation for how it works is very vague and seems false. I think this might be the next Magic Leap.

  31. Peter Lee

This is the true integral imaging display with full parallax, unlike Looking Glass Factory, which only has horizontal parallax. even this display is not truly holographic, as true holographic display requires phase modulation at sub-micron level. but this is a huge step forward. probably will take much longer than VR/AR due to the sheer amount of computation required to dynamically render gigapixel density images. I’d say 2050 at the very least when light field displays become the mainstream and 2080 for holographic TVs.

  34. Ben Barany

    October 8, 2021 at 12:28 pm

Okay how does it actually work though? I’m guessing it’s refracting non-visible spectrum photons through specific gases to change the spectrum to visible light right at the targeted point in 3D space.

    October 8, 2021 at 2:30 pm

it doesn’t make sense to me….. her fingers are always in front of it. I wanna see her put her hand behind it so the image shows up blocking the view of her hand. If this is a true hologram is should be able to do that no?

  38. elukok

    October 8, 2021 at 8:48 pm

So if you can walk around it and it is a 3d hologram, why are they showing it mounted in the wall and you being able to look at it only as a 2d screen from one angle. Probably some fakery going on. Seems very fishy to show it off like this.

  39. Mark Flatt

    October 8, 2021 at 9:57 pm

“Screw you and your stupid animal holograms.” Were in fact the last words of the recently extinct ivory-billed woodpecker. Woody’s friend the Bramble Cay melomys (also now recently extinct!) was from Australia and as such called this lady the C-word before permanently shuffling off the world stage. Can’t say I disagree with either of them!

It might as well be flat. Is this seriously the type of thing they want to showcase to the press? A boring lizard inside a box flush to a wall? How about a large animal or person you can actually walk around and view from ALL angles? Smells like they are hiding some serious limitations.

The title is deceptive. It isn’t a hologram. But it is a very advanced 3D screen presumably using a lightfield display. This isn’t a “true” hologram, but it is still something very cool. I’d be curious to see if it could display a full scene with objects at various depths, or if it can only display a single object like they’ve shown off.
