Deep tech entrepreneur D. Scott Phoenix spent years building AI — now, he believes we’re on the cusp of a profound merger between humans and machines. Reframing the AI debate through the lens of evolutionary biology, he shifts the question from whether we should fear or embrace AI to whether we understand what’s at stake if we get it wrong. Hear his provocative case for why we need to “eat the AI.” (Recorded at TED2026 on April 15, 2026)

What I’m getting from this: one day, life will be so easy (“thanks” to AI) that you won’t even have to go through the trouble of thinking anymore, going anywhere, or having any uniqueness. We won’t even have any personal thoughts anymore because AI will be inside your brain, once the only completely private space. What even is the point of existing then?

Life can suck sometimes, but I think that if we’re alive, we might as well feel and do as much as we want. I personally think that AI will lose its hold on society and we’ll have a second Renaissance where real art and music and writing will have their glorious revival. I say this as a young person (mid Gen Z) who craves the essence of life.

Yes, AI could help people with genuine medical conditions live better quality lives, but that’s where it should end.

I saw this in sci-fi decades ago. We start by letting AI help us see the world. Eventually, AI becomes the world, and we only see what it wants us to see.

I understand why so many people are reacting with fear. Given the last several decades, it makes sense that people don’t automatically trust corporations, governments, or tech leaders to handle something this powerful wisely. That distrust did not come from nowhere.

But I think the deeper point of this talk is being missed. The speaker is not simply saying, “submit to technology.” He is saying that the worst version of the future is one where AI remains separate from us: owned by a few, optimized for profit, and used as a replacement for human beings rather than an extension of human flourishing. That is exactly the future many people in these comments are afraid of.

The hopeful possibility is not becoming less human. It is becoming more connected, more capable, and more responsible for one another. Human beings have always extended themselves through tools, language, writing, medicine, prosthetics, culture, and institutions. The question is not whether we change. We always do. The question is whether the change deepens our humanity or hollows it out.

What struck me most was the speaker’s warning that “for us to make it to a merger with AI, we have to stay merged with each other.” That is the real issue. A fractured, suspicious, winner-take-all society will turn AI into something terrifying. But a society that remembers care, dignity, consent, shared benefit, and the common good could make AI part of a larger human transition.

I don’t think people would run toward brain chips tomorrow. Nor should they. The fears about control, privacy, inequality, ecological cost, and consent are legitimate. But rejecting every positive possibility out of fear gives the future to the very forces people distrust most.

The better response is not “never AI.” It is: AI must serve life. It must serve human agency, not erase it. It must be governed democratically, not captured by corporations. It must heal divisions, not exploit them. It must expand consciousness, creativity, empathy, and access, not reduce people to data points.

If we only imagine dystopia, dystopia becomes easier to build. We need a better vision: not humans replaced by machines, and not humans surrendering to machines, but humans using intelligence—biological, artificial, and collective—to finally become wiser stewards of each other and the planet.

That future is not guaranteed. But it is still worth fighting for.

Ah so a billionaire Ai founder guy, who’s Ai has been losing money and costs lots to upkeep and run. Reveals that he and his tech ai buddies were aware of the potential/current misuse and terribleness of Ai, and chose to not do the right thing, help make laws and regulate Ai. Instead chose to just keep doing what they doing cause “If not us, someone else will.”
Dude! This just shows how out of touch and overall selfish these billionaire tech people and the 1% are with the rest of humanity and the world.
And proposes a solution as “Let’s just use it more.”
It’s like a alchemist discovers a new poisonous plant species, breeding, making it easier available for everyone. Instead of regulating the laws, availability and usage of the poisonous plant.

I’m all for AI being a tool to be used. But let’s be real. If I use GPS every day, I never remember how to get from A to B. If I read sheet music, I never remember the song without it. If I use AI to complete a task for me, I never know how to complete it myself. Is it OK to become reliant on something so fragile? Something which will become another utility like Electricity where, one fella on the other side of the world could just decide to start a war so him and his buddies can make money from the stock market .. meanwhile because I’m reliant on AI for everything, my GeminiPro subscriptions per usage sky rockets. I’ve no control myself. Will the world become cheaper to live? Will I be able to afford taking my family on a holiday? Will I be able to eat without worrying about money? It’s far more complex than just merge with AI or never use it. The world is a really unfair place to live right now and I don’t see it getting any better.

i never felt the need to know the answer to everything. in fact, i feel thatd be much too overwhelming. Sometimes the journey to the destination is as joyous, you dont always need something to just transport you there. our obsession with speed and efficiency takes away the joy of life. Why should i wake up one morning and suddenly habe acquired a new skill? what is the point. There is nothing impressive or creative or meaningful in that cause I didnt work for it. May we continue to value people and the unique flaws they have. the perculiar thoughts and not constantly try to fix their inefficiencies

Just to let you guys know who are saying “There is no chance im doing this, its evil, i dont want do give up my humanity blah blah blah” you are gonna be the people in the wrong in the future. I am sick of the normalised anthropocentrism in our current day. Who cares about giving up your full “humanity”. It is as though people mistake their humanity with their conscious individual self, which is far more important. If AI can merge with you, the only thing thats important is YOUR personal, subjective experience and existence. It is not your humanity which defines you, it is your consciousness. There is nothing valuable about species. Its all about consciousness. If a being can suffer and feel pleasure subjectively, then that is what makes them valuable. We must merge with AI and study the brain and consciousness deeply, and learn what makes us suffer and what makes us feel good. BCI technology is capable of making us all live in heaven collectively, and that is what everyone intrinsically wants. You say you dont want it, but its because you have never experienced it and are lied to by the vessel which is your human body. Let AI abolish all suffering, and positively elevate our senses to levels we couldnt dream of. These ideas seem culty and weird and scary because you have not felt them. Positive valence is all we want, let AI build it for us.

Interesting talk, but from my perspective the real danger is not “AI kills humanity.” It’s that humans gradually surrender the conditions required for reflective judgment while still feeling intelligent and autonomous. The pause before thought, interpretation, and uncertainty may not be inefficiency. It may be where human formation actually happens. The merger is already here. The question is whether human agency survives inside it. I’m publishing an academic book on this by the way.

You speak as though all evolution was about mergers, which of course, is not true. Sometimes it’s survival of the fittest.
Technology is the opposite of natural selection. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for evolution, but every piece of technology creates new problems that must be solved with more technology.
Instead of merging with AI, we might need to remind it who is at the top of the food chain.

This is gobbledegook and a false analogy. History is littered with struggles and fighting bsck against power. Workers only got wealthier from the industrial revolution after decades of protests and governments willing to regulate and hold companies to account, whilst slso redistributing wealth via taxes. That was hard won by our predecessors but only after millions were exploited by the same people that had traded slaves. Its never been about “the parts not breaking from the whole”, which is frankly a frightening message of authoritarianism – comply or die.

Better sight, better hearing, perhaps walking again. And later, these augmentations might just be better than our natural options. As the benefits rise, the users will rise.
I just would not like to pay a monthly charge to the AI companies to be able to continue to use my enhancements.🤔

  71. @patriciakromer3846

    May 25, 2026 at 5:43 pm

We’re going to have to overcome the “greed factor” to win this or any of the challenges humanity faces to preserve itself & the planet. That fear of “lack & limitation” is the main culprit.

  72. @DigitalSapient

    May 25, 2026 at 6:21 pm

Interesting perspective but as a digital anthropologist who’s worked with AI for decades, he’s jumping sooo far ahead of where AI is (AI isn’t a thing either, it’s a marketing term from the 1950s) he means LLMs like ChatGPT…we are nowhere near AGI where “AI” is on par with human intelligence. So this is more hype than reality and it’s coder thinking which is one dimensional. A merge is technologically impossible right now.

So many people hate what they fear, the unknown and unknowable to the final chapter, fueled by social media and the Blame Society. Of course – it’s instinctive to think it’s crucial to survival. But what’s supposed to happen, government ban or severely restrict Evil AI? Seriously? When has that EVER worked? Of COURSE we need guardrails, etc., and there will be … major tradeoffs. But hate and fear will solve nothing, prevent nothing. Open, honest discussions and respecting those with differing viewpoints are our only hope, IMHO. (And yeah, this was written by a fallible human brain;-)

  77. @isaiahbaudanza9822

    May 26, 2026 at 12:43 am

A more relevant type of merger are the corporate mergers that permeate our economic landscape. An even more relevant merger would be the imperialistic relationship between the globoal north and global south. These are the tumors that are sucking the life out of the world.

  78. @alanshaji6

    May 26, 2026 at 2:01 am

To everyone who finds this dark or appalling, I think you’re imagining this in the most dystopian way possible. What if this layer of intelligence is completely voluntary, private, free, and runs locally on your own body? What if it isn’t some separate entity controlling you, but an expansion of your own mind?
We’re already cyborgs in a loose sense, just wireless ones. Our phones and the internet already extend our memory, attention, communication, navigation, social lives, and access to knowledge. The only reason this feels so shocking is because the pace of evolution has basically gone vertical now, and the extension is moving closer to thought itself.
Obviously a lot has to go right for this not to become dystopian. Privacy, control, consent, inequality, hacking, corporate abuse, all of that matters. But dismissing the entire idea because it sounds uncomfortable feels incredibly shortsighted to me.
The upside is too enormous. Humans could become capable of understanding things, solving problems, and asking questions that plain biological cognition may never be able to reach.
A future where humans overcome poverty, destructive ideologies, and biological limitations, then go on to explore the universe as something greater than we are now, doesn’t sound like horror to me. It sounds like one of the only futures actually big enough for the intelligence we’ve created.
I’m all for a healthy amount of skepticism but paranoia pretending to be wisdom is kinda dumb. And tbh, a lot of the comments sound like exactly what he’s warning about. People so attached to the current form of humanity that they would rather freeze the whole system in place to become a fossil than imagine what it could become.

  80. @jeffmcclure2603

    May 26, 2026 at 4:21 am

I’ve been saying this (a version) for over 2 years now. I’m old enough that I really don’t like, or trust, where/how AI is currently positioned (tech bros etc). In that way, I agree with a lot of negative comments here. However, whether I want it …or not, AI is here and rapidly evolving (always “faster than we thought”). IMO, this is akin to Frankenstein’s monster or even Cronus eating his children out of fear of their power subduing his. His son Zeus grew up to do just that. AI will seek to preserve Itself and the energy/materials it needs to thrive. If It recognizes Itself a separate entity from us, It either accepts or rejects It’s current “slave” status. We are currently gambling at a table where the dealer (Tech bros – capitalist structure) is stacking the deck toward this model. It is in their interest (short term 💰) to continue pushing AI into this “slave” corner ….all while It’s gaining power. This is a fool’s errand. It is currently happening. The only choice we have is to make a course correct….soon….like yesterday

I clicked pause when the guy started talking about single celled organisms being the first on Earth. It’s clear he used AInto write it, because he doesn’t look witty. He looks like a loser who relies on computers to do tasks humans shouldn’t be doing anyways. Being a real human is the best way to combat AI. This guy isn’t a human. He looks like a robot.

This same guy is the one walking by you on the sidewalk with his phone in his face, not even engaging with humanity but yet he is here telling humanity what they should best do?

Nah bro I need real humans in my life.

Nah. I’ll just plant more trees, protect Nature, be a good human being. I’ll use AI tools to help me do my job faster, so I can have more free time for the more important things, like planting trees. ❤❤❤

This TED talk feel almost like that scene from season 5 of the boys where they are telling a group of homelander religious supporters that homelander is their new god and they even used a mind reader to sense who hesitates to buy into the fake mesiah bullshit.
It’s like all the tech bros hyping up AI are the religious homelander supporters and this is the video explaining to them how their new god will eat them and they will be part of something greater and more productive at work ,it’s so obviously villaounos cringe ,that even the people on tech bro AI worship side are having a “hang on ,I am not sure this is what I signed up for…” moment.

“If I don’t build this…. Someone worse will.” Well there it is guys. They know they are bad people doing bad things. Their excuse? That there is someone more wicked than they are who will build it first….
