Why I won’t upgrade to the Note 20 Ultra (from the Note 10 Plus)

Jeff Bakalar has used a Note 10 Plus for a full year and sees absolutely no reason for an update to the Note 20 Ultra. #Samsung #Note20Ultra #Note10+

Should you see the phone first, try it for a while and then publish your review?

120hz is a reason to upgrade alone

I have the Note 10 Plus also. I will not be buying the Note 20 Ultra. I won’t be buying any Samsung phone from now on. I live in the UK and because of this I have to put up with Samsungs decision to put their own Exynos chips in the phones we get. Why should I pay the same amount of money for a device that has been proven to be inferior to the models sold elsewhere in the world. My next phone will either be the Sony Xperia 1 ii or the Oneplus 8 Pro.

I love my Note 10+ and I don’t plan to switch to a new Note right now.
But I’m interested to try the new Tab S7/+ for the 120 Hertz display that can also run it at quad HD resolution.
Finally a tablet that brings great specs that goes far beyond from just a large screen ( less high-end then a flashing phone) and lots of loud speakers.

I probably wouldn’t do it either, I pre ordered the note 20 ultra only because it is actually a pretty huge upgrade for me as I still have the regular galaxy s9 not even the plus lol

The only reason I updated my Huawei mate 10 to the 20 this year was because global warming melted the back off. Otherwise it was still rocking.

I am currently using Note9 and I think it is still prefect for me although it is an Exynos version. Looking towards switching to iOS when I got the cash due to disappointing performance of Exynos chips.

I feel the same about my note 9. Samsung is giving me too good a deal to pass up on the ultra 20.

  9. Profound Bandit

    August 13, 2020 at 11:08 pm

Agreed. The Note 10 is still a great phone. I actually gave mine away as a birthday gift to someone who couldn’t afford it, and I still feel envious that they’re enjoying it.

  10. Roger Chan

    August 13, 2020 at 11:21 pm

100% in agreement with everything you had mentioned; however, I did upgrade via the trade in program. It’s hard to not take advantage of the $650 trade in offer plus another $200 for accessories plus another $115 bundle discount when buying the phone with the new Samsung watch. They sure know how to keep me around until the next release cycle. Otherwise, I was planning on switching to the iPhone 12.

    August 13, 2020 at 11:25 pm

More like, I won’t upgrade because it will be obsolete next year.

Already sold my Note 10 for a grand a couple months back, and pre-ordered the Note 20 with the bonus Bud Lives 🙂

I love my note 10 plus I don’t think I’ll upgrade until I see a note with the front facing camera hidden under the display…..come on Samsung you can do it

I’m a note 9 user and I have no interest whatsoever in upgrading!

  15. Pavel Guarisma

    August 13, 2020 at 11:46 pm

Have a Note 9 and that one key feature that was going to be bring me over to the 20 Ultra was the 120 Mhz refresh. That’s out the window now as it does not allow it at QHD resolution so no longer really interested.

  16. TheZarbi

    August 13, 2020 at 11:50 pm

I’m happy with the Note 10 plus. I caught a fever about the 20 Ultra, but now it’s out I’m just feeling… why?

  17. Ioannis Katsikas

    August 14, 2020 at 12:21 am

Well said!!! I totally agree. Till exynos with latest arm cores and AMD graphics I am sticking with Note 10+ and I have the Exynos version of Note 10+ and still no slowdown after a year of usage. As for the fingerprint sensor of Note 10+ mine woks really good.

  18. Kondilom Miljanice Kulic

    August 14, 2020 at 12:25 am

Even if I wanted to upgrade, in my country there is only 4G version of Note 20 Ultra available which does not only have Exynos but 8 Gb of RAM (yeah, it exists). So, going from Note 10 plus with 12 Gb to 8 Gb… I don’t know man, Samsung is experimenting A LOT this year, quantity over quality, I’m half sure my next phone won’t even be Samsung. No serious company should allow themselves to release 1500 bucks phone with hardware issue (S20 ultra), then to tell people “it will be fixed through updates” and guess what – nothing happened, they just installed new camera system on Note20. I can’t imagine how pissed are those who bought S20 Ultra

  19. WolfWhite70

I only want to upgrade because of the camera I have the Note 10+ my favorite Note was the 9+

What an idiotic review. He starts by saying that he needed at least one headline feature worth the upgrade, and then says 5G and high refresh rate screen aren’t those headline features… 😒

I agree totally. I’ve just ordered the note 20 ultra but after seeing this I am in total agreement. Thanks for honesty and ill save money till next year

    August 14, 2020 at 1:12 am

Note 10+ is a keeper for me. There’s nothing about the Note 20 Ultra that’s worthy of an upgrade from my N10+ imo. Maybe the next one.

I wasn’t going to upgrade but really liked the color and with $400 off from Xfinity and selling my 10 for $500 it’s only going to cost about $400 to upgrade.

Yeah tbh true i feel like whoever who has Note 10+ shouldnt upgrade to Note 20 ultra. Design is still the awesome has triple camera perfect for 2020

And on the topic of the ultrasonice fingerprint scanner on note 10+ mine is 100% working perfectly cos i take out the protective film and i register twice

I have a note 10 plus and I’m not upgrading till there is a mix of fold and note come to the market . The changes from 10 plus to 20 ultra are not massive for my use.

5G upgrade has to be the worse advertising for a smartphone but people are falling for it. Most people have 5G WiFi at home and in some workplaces and most phones support dual band WiFi so buying a phone for it’s “5G” capabilities right now don’t make too much sense

  45. toadlguy

    August 15, 2020 at 12:16 am

You did not even mention the stylus and the new low latency. The only reason I would get a Note is for the stylus and after using the Apple Pencil on an iPad for years, the latency on all earlier Notes was unacceptable. Guess you don’t really use the Note’s signature feature.

I have a pixel 2xl. Labor Day is the aim for the note 10 plus. If the sale isn’t where I want it to be, then the Motorola Edge Plus.

I have the note 10 plus and pre ordered the note 20 ultra in mystic bronze along with them buds live😜 i dont really care that the note 20 might or might not be worth it, tbh having the latest and greatest is just my thing 😎

If you “hear” there’s a big difference between 120hz and 60hz then that means you don’t know anything about refresh rates and haven’t truly experienced the difference. You can’t just make the animations on Android non existent or set it to .5 and call it a substitute for more frames per second. The difference between 60hz and 120hz is night and day. If you don’t care for it then that’s fine, but to disregard it as nothing big is completely inane. Go try it before making a video about how it’s not important.

So disappointed with Samsung’s basic Note 20 that I just left them for LG dual screen. Could not be more happy! Gave my Note 10 to my son. As someone with A.D.D. the LG dual screen is very satisfying!

I am planning to buy the Note 10 plus this Sept. However, I am debating whether I should buy the Note 20 ultra instead. Please help if I should stick with the Note 10 plus or the Note 20 ultra for my new phone? Thanks.

Note 10 plus $700 vs. Note 20 ultra $1300 i don’t see the justification for the extra cost. 256 gb memory 12gb ram and yes you can get 5g on note 10 512 gb with time of flight sensor on camera along with 45 watt charging. Note 20 have 25 watt only

  57. haidar hakim

    August 15, 2020 at 5:17 pm

Why would you upgrade every year. It’s not for you

  58. David Miyasato-Crawford

    August 15, 2020 at 5:20 pm

I agree. I have the 10+ with 256GB so it would cost more than $650 to upgrade. Upgraded from the 9 last year. The $200 Samsung gift card selection was limited to only selected items.- Iast year or close out stuff, meh. No 5G in my area. I really have no reason to uparade . Sort of like the Duo but not enough to buy Version 1. Too much bezel, no memory expansion option. same cpu as my Note 10, no place for pen and what would I do with out my S notes.

  59. Steven Campbell

    August 15, 2020 at 5:51 pm

Pretty much all big tech YouTubers love the ultra vs the regular note 20 but I get it. The 10+ was pretty tight
I’m excited for the new gorilla glass on the ultra!

  60. Atom11

    August 15, 2020 at 5:59 pm

So you haven’t tested it but already recommending to not buy it? Ok, clickbait. I expect more from CNET. I don’t need opinions

    August 15, 2020 at 7:08 pm

Thanks! The video is indeed very helpful. I was kinda in double minds of selling the note 10 plus & buying the note 20 ultra but even for me for the 1st time since S6 launch i didn’t feel the need to do it as the phone & it’s aura glow color still feel like I recently bought it. Hope samsung brings in some significant changes in note 21 ultra next year.

  62. jcru40

    August 15, 2020 at 7:08 pm

Love My Note 10 plus BUT Samsung offered $650 for My Note 10 plus TO trade for Note 20 ultra AND on top of that they gave Me $150 credit towards anything Samsung So I chose Buds Live . Great deal .

  63. Ray J

    August 15, 2020 at 7:27 pm

I love my Note 10 plus even after a year but I still wanna upgrade to the Ultra, absolutely love the matte bronze finish and the S Pen is now on the left side which is perfect because I’m a leftie 🙂

    August 15, 2020 at 7:56 pm

100% with you sir. I don’t see a reason to upgrade at all. The per response maybe..?

  65. Troy Burge

    August 15, 2020 at 8:08 pm

This was a total waste of time. Most people are going from 8 or 9, Bla Bla Bla……

  66. Chris Wahlers

    August 15, 2020 at 8:20 pm

I have to agree that the note 10 plus still feels fresh after a year. I wish they made the N20U a little bigger.
DeX users might be psyched for wireless Dex and the camera is actually a pretty substantial upgrade except for the smaller wide angle chip.
It certainly isn’t a must have upgrade but im considering it.

  67. lndro

    August 15, 2020 at 11:04 pm

What about buying it now in August, go for the 20 or note 10 plus? in europe its exynos wich is a crap

  72. Kevin Simmons

    August 15, 2020 at 11:28 pm

I agree completely. I love my note 10+. I definitely won’t upgrade. Plus i don’t like the camera hump on the note 20 ultra.

  73. 1WINDSHEAR

    August 16, 2020 at 12:20 am

Note 10+ owner here. Absolutely no need to upgrade at all.

  74. Philippe Rostin

    August 16, 2020 at 12:36 am

I also stick to my note 10 plus. The note 20 ultra is way too heavy, the camera bump is as thick as the phone, and the price is ridiculous.
