Not true at all….there is a space of conversation beyond the political domain. In fact you could make a case that the attempt by people to make everything political is thrown everyone unnecessarily into the arena in a very combative manor where we don’t have an honest unemotional grownup conversation anymore. This exudes I’m oppressed/victim so shut up and hear me. If you don’t your ignorant and evil. This feels like a rally cry to slay a dragon that’s not there.

The three examples of poetry that Ms. Gorman gives in this short video are: at a protest, in a history class, and at the Statue of Liberty. *All* of these things have to do with policy and politics. Politics are about public matters, civic affairs, living in a society. Policy is EVERYTHING. If we still lived in a time before industry, before agriculture, before civilization, then your comment might be accurate. But we don’t. Everything around us, from the contents of your shampoo bottle, to the way you commute to work or school– everything exists in the form that it does because of politics.
It seems that the *real* issue you present here is your frustration with the combative nature of discussing policy goals. Does it always have to be so combative? I would say, no. If you are familiar with the Socratic method, with arguing in good faith, with using logic and reason and critical thinking, then you know that productive dialogue *is possible* to further understanding between people on different sides of an issue. But– there *must* be a willingness from all involved to actually participate fairly in this dialogue. If we have folks with a bullhorn, shouting words of fear and nonsense, presenting fiction as fact, with the intent of drowning out the words from their opponent– then yes, we have nothing but highly emotional combativeness, and therefore improving policies becomes much harder

@Inversion I think this is a good argument. I don’t agree with the premise, though, that this breaks down her own poetic argument shown in this short. She’s looking for poetry in power struggles, and, I believe, she is saying that meaning is what makes the poem, not the subject. My interpretation of her words here is that people telling her to not seek meaning in power struggle for fear of the subject itself do not understand the real power of poetry.

@Dimitros Sure, I’ll give it a quick go. TLDR: look at the title of this video – “Using your voice is a political choice”. She claims that as long as you use your voice, it must be political. Sure, it can be political, but can you not talk about the weather without it being political or oppressed?
In the short, she raises several texts (and a speech?) that have political history and claims those to be poetry, regardless of form. Assuming that her impression of poetry = aesthetic use of language and since she’s politically interested and invested, she clearly sees those examples as beautiful and therefore poetry. Well, to some extent that’s fine and all, but then she makes a logical error: since she finds certain politically charged language to be considered poetry, she defines poetry as necessarily being political. Not her poetry, or her preferences for poetry, but poetry as a whole. We know this isn’t true because even if poetry is an aesthetic use of language to express some meaning (which is fair enough), there can be many meanings which can be conveyed that are easily non-political. Maybe a love poem, a descriptive poem of nature, a linguistic poem for the sake of being a challenge to be penned? With this premise being so flawed, there’s no need to further elaborate on her other leaps afterwards. (like how there are non-political challenging questions, whether or not poetry really is “at the pulse of the most dangerous…” and however it went, etc.)
