“I’m here for people to be interested in my content not me” but we like that tho? I would love more Tech Diff, but I think it’s hard to get everyone in and film.

“Speed reading etc” – yes. I have a bad habit of “speed watching” some videos

    12:45 “Subscribers are meaningless”

I noticed Rhett And Link don’t ask people to subscribe anymore at the end of their video. Everyone is figuring that out subscriber count is not an indicator of how many people are seeing your content

    • @LeslieSpeaker

      June 2, 2026 at 9:00 pm

Subscriptions became meaningless once YT stopped showing all the videos of all your channels. There’s ways to see all videos still, but it requires third party solutions to watch.

  6. @Congele_

    June 2, 2026 at 8:52 pm

The idea that attention spans are not necesserily growing shorter but that we are somehow getting better at processing more information faster is a way of seeing things that I would never have thought of myself, but it somehow turned something that felt like a bad thing into such a cool thing! I kinda needed that tbh ^^

  8. @LeslieSpeaker

    June 2, 2026 at 8:58 pm

Why is Tom Scott repeating YT marketing talking points? Audience = algorithm??? No no no, not true. Tom Scott is claiming here that the YT algorithm does *exactly* know “the audience” of a channel? No, they know exactly what makes the audience watch the ads for longer, that’s all. It *is* an algorithm. And you are still optimizing for it no matter how you call it, you could call it your daddy it wouldn’t care, it rewards content creators who follow the whatever the rules of the month are.

  10. @Ice_Karma

    June 2, 2026 at 9:02 pm

3:54 Huh, as a non-creator, I didn’t realize that YouTube would ABC test video titles and thumbnails for you. I figured creators were doing that manually. (By the sounds of it, maybe they used to, and maybe some still do?)

  23. @SJrad

    June 2, 2026 at 9:23 pm

When it comes to sponsorship/brand deals, I have to wonder how successful they are for the company doing them. i feel like a lot of people just skip that part of video to after the brand deal.
I usually have my doubts about the product being advertised. Maybe im just cynical about them with controversies involving them in the past, such as honey and better help. Or it’s a situation like data deletion services and vpns where they do the things they say, but it’s exaggerated how much they help, sometimes in part because of limitations outside their control.

  25. @Dr.Death8520

This is why I will always watch your content Tom. Not only do you find a wide spread of interesting things to film and talk about on location, but there’s a dedication to accuracy and honesty that underlines everything you put out. And you know, chartering a plane to check if a small ocean rock island still exists because it makes a good video

  26. @Federiicco

    June 3, 2026 at 6:33 pm

Started YT three months ago, I didn’t tell friends and family about it and I’ve been posting consistently. I’m only at 81 subs but having 81 strangers that like and engage with my content is better than 100 friends who will always scroll past.
New creators, let’s keep going 😊🎉💪🏽

I saw that PhilosophyTube got added to the British Film Institute’s library recently for their Transitioning video.

I kind of feel that Tom Scott’s overcoming his fear of Rollercoasters video should probably get similar treatment, for its cultural relevance.

  33. @Mezzalunen

    June 3, 2026 at 7:02 pm

11:30 I’d actually disagree here- lots of creators I follow pivoted and I still enjoyed watching them and supporting them. It’s not impossible but as long as the content is still good people will support you

  34. @broncogrizz

    June 3, 2026 at 7:22 pm

23:00 For a band they can at least continue to tour and make money. Sebastian Bach just played in my city. A couple hits in the 80’s-90’s and they can tour forever. What is a “content creator” going to do? How much does a back catalog of videos get you on Youtube, especially is ad reads pay 10x the YT ad revenue?

  35. @Riggwelter00

    June 3, 2026 at 7:23 pm

living like this seems like a nightmare

  36. @MrSirViking

    June 3, 2026 at 7:23 pm

When it comes to thumbnails and titles, i dont care what content you are creating, if you are lying in your thumbnail and/or title i will not watch your content again. If your content is good, there is no need to be lying.

  37. @neetboi

    June 3, 2026 at 7:29 pm

I was really hoping Tom would do a classic “Im here at” for the intro, missed opportunity lol

  38. @drnyk1

    June 3, 2026 at 7:35 pm

12:15 Disagree, as a subscriber. Some days, the algorithm that recommends me videos is making terrible choices. I can scroll my phone for 3-5 minutes looking for a video I want to see. And then I switch over to the Subscriptions tab, see what my subscribed channels made recently, and dive right into the video. Videos that the algorithm failed to recommend to me, even though I already gave it the biggest clue that I like that content by subscribing.

Once the subscription tab is removed, yeah, the subscriber count will be meaningless.

  45. @ljc5277

    June 3, 2026 at 8:32 pm

I really appreciate the final question bc I feel like the concept of the “has-been” is really frustrating and often unfair. There are a million reasons why someone with visibility is no longer visible and it doesn’t have to be a huge tragedy or fodder for mockery (unless they deserve it, like Kid Rock).

  64. @SaraSmiles29

    June 4, 2026 at 5:19 pm

Here we are, the “viewers” of Tom Scott, who are so invested in his content that the audience showed us this video, which is so different to his normal content. This is how viewers become fans 😊

  65. @BirdieKay-q6t

  68. @lightsideofsin8969

    June 4, 2026 at 6:30 pm

The best tip I can give as a moderately successful creator is to appreciate and validate the people who are watching instead of moaning about the people who aren’t.

Nothing makes me angrier than people who make entire videos about their view count being down. It tells the people who *are* watching “your viewership isn’t good enough, I want the people I don’t have”.

  69. @ggbirdymill1618

    June 4, 2026 at 8:22 pm

I remember so many good channels (that yes, made somewhat good content, but) I stopped watching because of their constant clickbait.

I still follow YouTube posters who have no interest in getting views, without any sense of getting advert dollars. I treasure them, despite that I look at other content. Make sense of that.

  75. @TesserId

    June 5, 2026 at 2:16 pm

“I want to be a rock star”… … Do you understand that the greatest rock stars cared more about what they were creating… If not, you’ll never be that. You want to do soul music, then get a soul.

  76. @JacenHorn

    June 5, 2026 at 2:17 pm

    This is amazing and accurate!

  77. @ShioKoori

    June 5, 2026 at 2:29 pm

Maybe that’s unremarkable to a lot of people, but I do like what he said about the sponsorships/brand deals. He said he turns down stuff he isn’t convinced of or doesn’t support, but also said others have differing opinions and do, which to me does not imply he’d judge anyone based on it. I do think though, regardless of what it is, brand deals only ever make sense when the person presenting it seems like they are not ONLY in it for the money. As long as it is a product or service you use or a game you actually play/played before, I am totally okay with sponsorships. If I see that the CC themself doesn’t even believe in the thing they try to sell, I just want bother to interact with it either and if I notice they just take any deal, I’ll probably stop watching before long. Like, I am fully aware they want to make money and that is fine. But if you are selling something you don’t believe in, imo, you are just tricking your audience in the same way he described for clickbait without truth to it.

  78. @mikdog

    June 5, 2026 at 3:21 pm

    I thought dude left YT

  79. @EtherealMoon

    June 5, 2026 at 4:18 pm

I think people sell themselves short when it comes to scripted content. Obviously it’s also less fun to make–but the reason Tom’s old videos were so watched is because they were informative in a way that stimulates the brain more than unscripted content can often do.

  80. @karinahelgachandrawijaya8032

  81. @CujoSound

    June 5, 2026 at 4:37 pm

@TomScottGo I like how you approach all these videos and content, suggestions and help as a professional and not a single “Just make a ten second video” or “be as loud as possible and kids will like it”. Thank you.

  82. @TheKz262

    June 5, 2026 at 4:43 pm

Since when did tom get so…quotable? Really informative and interesting (Despite having no interest in doing content creation myself).

I really like how clear Tom keeps a wall between his YouTube life and personal life. Have an “Audience” not “fans” perfectly sums it up. Really wish someone asked him about shortform media and its effects on long form media

  83. @duprod5482

    June 5, 2026 at 5:12 pm

Now I understand what’s happening… I’m part (we all are, I know) of an A B C testing scheme.. sometimes I scroll through the videos in my feed and think, hey I should watch that one later.. then when I get back to it the thumbnail and title has changed… I still click on it, but mot because the image is more appealing or inviting or whatever..

  86. @Uhlbelk

    June 5, 2026 at 6:12 pm

I hate that youtube is now exactly the same as watching corporate television. I hate that people I watched because I they had an integrity about their content and their persona have completely lost my trust by taking corporate sponsorship. I hate that more than half of everything is fake and scripted, and that “reality tv” is as popular as ever. The internet, particularly social media, has lost most of it’s value to me because it is no longer about curiosity and passion, its about making money, going viral, getting sponsored, and becoming “famous”.

Michael Underwood was a teacher in the first place … he went on a sort of reality TV show where they were auditioning to become a children’s TV presenter and the winner got a job on CBBC IIRC. He blew the competition out of the water. Anyway, classroom teaching seems to be his plan A that he’s gone back to.

I give a creator two strikes then never return if their thumbnail or title is a lie or clickbait. I leave polite but direct feedback about it, in the hope for a better net. Fool that I am.

As one of those people who used to watch every single of Tom’s old videos but his newer stuff no longer really clicks with me, I just want to say thank you for all the good times 🙂

“Upgrading your mic is worth it” – Tom
I guess wired did not listen to this advice

Tom says youtube will never remove the subscriber count in a video with no subscriber count.

  111. @joethemanager1

    June 6, 2026 at 5:08 pm

kind of hilarious to hear a very british-sounding man use distinctly american slang, e.g. “inside baseball”, “get the bag”

  112. @DasIstDerMars

Replacing algorithm with audience is grim and hopeless idea.

  113. @markbrown4453

    June 6, 2026 at 5:41 pm

Despite what Tom hopes, I think many people DO follow him. He has such a strong track record on making good things that I’m willing to take the chance and go on the journey.
In his music analogy: after 6 banger albums by a band, I’m willing to listen to the next one even if it’s a different experimental style.

A friend of mine who was a web developer for online content, asked his clients; ‘Do you want a skip intro?’ This was 25 years ago.

  115. @ararebeast

    June 6, 2026 at 5:53 pm

I don’t envy whomever had to summarize Tom’s sentiments within text limits, because even though his answers are in-depth, none of it is really wasted words.

“Creator’s Curse” is watching your old stuff and finding it unbearable, and that is a good sign – it means you’re improving.

Why in Gods name would I turn on subtitles if I can watch it with audio without disturbing anybody?

  122. @SnakeOfBacon

    June 7, 2026 at 2:16 am

I’ve found these answers extremely useful, especially the hub-hero-help typing, I hadn’t heard of that before. It’s especially good to hear repeated the few things about this hobby that I was already sure about: Make things! Have a good mic! Don’t just aim to be famous!

  123. @emmah6418

    June 7, 2026 at 3:33 am

Tom’s new series may also have fewer YouTube views because some people (me) are watching the moment the episodes come out on Nebula, and not on YouTube

  124. @johnbeer4963

  131. @Zichqec

    June 7, 2026 at 8:25 am

3 seconds in: yes! Go make stuff!
If you wanna draw, start drawing!
If you wanna write, start writing!
If you wanna code, start coding!
It won’t look like much immediately, but give it a few months of consistent effort to get your feet wet and see how you can progress. Then look back in a year. Then 3 years. Then 5.
I’m 6ish years into my current hobby and having a grand time with a bunch of new skills ✨
If you don’t know what steps to take to start, make researching that your first step!

Not surprised that Tom Scott is honest and real with every answer. That’s who he is.

  139. @DawlessAndBibleBlack

    June 7, 2026 at 1:09 pm

Watching this made me realize the tragedy of my life. I care extremely deeply about things and I am good at some of them, but all of those things are something the world couldn’t care less about. And observing people caring about their things is like watching an alien species.

  140. @Sinikick

    June 7, 2026 at 3:27 pm

    Love you Tom

  141. @MikeTrieu

    June 7, 2026 at 7:17 pm

The “Subscribers” number is so useless that I thought I was subscribed to Tom Scott since about 2020, only to find out that I wasn’t. I only hit the button today, despite sesing Tom Scott on my feed and deliberately searching for “Tom Scott” several times.
