TED Fellow Tom Osborn wants more young people to have access to the mental health support they need. With the Shamiri Institute, he and his team are training 18- to 22-year-olds to deliver evidence-based mental health care to their peers in Kenya — which has only two psychiatrists for every million people. Hear how their community-first, youth-oriented model could become a template to help kids across the world lead successful, independent lives.

If the education system is a primary root for the stress it may be more efficient to address that issue, and solve the problem from its root. There’s nothing wrong with the suggestion of treating the problem with more doctors, but I think the old adage applies here, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

    • Fathima Moolla

      February 21, 2022 at 7:51 pm

Absolutely, prevention is necessary and so integral. However, if the problem already exists and is getting worse, then the need to address is directly (through interventions like this) are equally as important. For instance, giving food to the hungry won’t solve poverty, but it’s still needed in order for people to live. We can do both!

It’s very simple, get them off social media. I’m an older person who spent a few weeks on social media in 2017 at the behest of friend who thought it was a good way to stay in touch and I had to get off it as I’ve never seen such poison in my entire life, I was bullied as a teen at school 45 years go and it was nothing like this, total strangers just being nasty to you for the sake of it. Horrible.

Jesus can help with this – He is the Way, the Truth, and Life! Those who believe in Him have His love, joy, and peace even in difficult circumstances.

      February 21, 2022 at 9:46 pm

That’s just a coping mechanism, it doesn’t deal with the source of the mental stress in the first place.

    • ray fernandez

      February 22, 2022 at 12:55 am

@Feroce I disagree, in fact I’d bet a large percentage of the youth struggling with mental illness don’t have faith in god .

      February 22, 2022 at 5:52 am

Not everyone wants to adopt the concept of the christian Jesus into their lives as pillars for their mental health. Im sure you come from a good place, but in order to help the most people you must speak from a place that everyone can relate to. Not everyone can relate to Christian/biblical teachings. In fact many people disagree with biblical teachings. Of course, there are many messages in the bible that are incredibly wise and that would be beneficial for anyone, so its best to speak from the universally wise principles that the bible advocates fir, rather than telling people to invest into an individual as their lord and savior.

Please get rid of the mindless chasing after letter-grades for studying a subject that does not captivate your enthusiasm.
A therapist functions to heal an injury; but the injury ought not to exist, in the first place.

    • Feroce

      February 21, 2022 at 9:43 pm

Well said! Letter grades don’t give any indication of a person’s mental development or their ability to retain knowledge, they’re completely useless and just contribute to stress. Schools would be better off without them!

Stop pandering to delusions… people need to face reality. Women don’t become men, and men don’t become women. I’ll be polite to trans people until you demand I participate inyour delusion. Then hard no. Why is the suicide rate among trans so high? Because, in part, they were led to believe transitioning would resolve their mental health issues. If you weren’t healthy to begin with, the probability of being healthy while taking powerful drugs, androgens or estrogens. that can affect your neurochemistry isn’t real high. So after transitioning they discover nothing has really changed, and despair sets in. I’ve lost two friends exactly that way. And one who was healthy before, and healthy after. But he knows that he isn’t really a man. He is a woman posing as man. And he is happy that way, and that I’d wonderful for him.

I’d be much more comfortable if our doctors and lawyers didn’t have to work hard for letter grades. Instead they should be granted professional status based on their desire to help society. Also they should be paid equally, not based on the quality of their work. This would alleviate the stress of the job and result in a healthy equitable utopia for all.

    • TheRealHerbaSchmurba

      February 22, 2022 at 5:46 am

Its beneficial to reward people for the quality of their work. Im sure if you took time to think about that you would realize why. Because there are many many reasons why.

It’s another time to set a goal for the year, one need to set goals and take bold steps in achieving them. Remember success is not obtained overnight, you have to stop procrastinating and try what you have always wanted to improve in you’re life and well being. Investment will take you closer to your dreams.

Mental health is really important. We need experts but it’s so expensive for those financially unstable to study to be one and others can not afford to seek a mental expert.

Based on what he said it sounds more like present days societal/cultural pressure on “be successful” and fear of the future “will I be successful” and in terms of Depression talking: “I am a failure” and “I will fail”

One thing that is not mentioned much with regard to dealing with mental health issues is faith… I see pple try everything under the sun and still not find relief or healing but not faith.
Faith isn’t viewed very favorably today due to pple of certain faiths not doing a good job exemplifying their faith.. but it helped me more than everything else I tried for severe mental illness 🙂

Between Binance’s money laundering and FTX’s fraud scandal, can crypto be trusted now that these bad actors are in jail? Some folks view crypto as a silly, get-rich-quick gambit. Others view blockchains as the future of the internet and computing itself. But we’re learning where there’s potential to change the world, there is also a lot of room for scammers.
