Tesla is still so far ahead that no one else is any competition. Everyone is trying to come up with something better nothing has actually worked so far. These hundreds of “break-through” videos are just ads trying to get investment money. If we ever have a true breakthrough then great. In the meantime, thanks Elon for creating this change in the world’s industry towards battery powered vehicles.

Batteries are not only not cost effective but they’re bad for the environment.
At this rate it will be a hundred years before these stupid things even make any sense.
Put a generator in it and you’ve just solved the problems..
Like ALL of them.
Ford did this in the 90s with a Taurus and it got about 3,000 miles in range and was lower emissions.
They make these things ugly and unappealing which is why stupid people buy them so they can virtue signal that they’re driving a stupid, ugly car and they’re somehow taking one for the team by doing that yet they cost more than a giant SUV and have a larger carbon foot print.
But stupid people will go to any lengths to feel like they’re doing something good all the while doing nothing good and not really caring whether they do or not.
They just want to say they’re better than you😂

Can they scale production? The 4680 will rule the next 5yrs for sure… a decade in my opinion. Design is easier than mass production scale. Again, my opinion.

It’s not that people dislike EVs, and you use pejoratives like “haters”. People make economic decisions and EVs are not economic. They are not saving the planet either. On top of that, there is a time component that people will not invest. Eventually EVs will have battery, infrastructure, and cost to a point where they make sense vs ICE cars. Just because you falsely see them as “GREEN” and you hold a fanboy chubby for them does not make everybody else a hater. I’ve watched in-laws go through the ridiculous process of finding chargers, waiting for 20 minutes to get hooked up, waiting 5 minutes for the charger to allow them to charge, then waiting another 30 minutes for a partial charge. They were also disconnected 3 times from the charger and had to call tech support. That seems pretty stupid to most of us haters. EVs will not take over transportation at least until 2040. Most likely we are looking at 2050+ for EVs to be the dominant form of transportation.

For myself, and every single person I know, battery range has nothing to do with not switching over to EV. I’m sure there are many people out there but everyone I know puts far less then 150 miles a day on their cars, and maybe twice a year a road trip over 400 miles in a day. Again, not saying my circle of friends is “normal” but I personally don’t see range as a hold back. What I see as the hold back is, after high entry cost, the lack of infrastructure and the ability to support the growth in an environmentally positive way over the current model.
I wish more headlines were promoting the infrastructure advancements and production instead of “the next-gen batteries will drive you around the world on a single charge…”.

When I got my first Tesla in 2016 I was sweating bullets the first week. After that I never thought about it again. This is what I tell everyone I know – it will be on your mind for the first week and then you probably won’t think about it again. Tesla has charging down cold – not sure about other brands TBH. I don’t know anyone that has a Rivian or Kia or Lucid.
It is literally like a cell phone. Just charge it overnight and you are good for the entire day. If you are traveling – you will be able to find an outlet to recharge it away from home – the GPS does all the work.

@Brad I was going to say the same thing. I got my Model 3 in 2019 and took it on a long road trip right away. It was effortless. After that, I never worried about it again.

@Brad Exactly. I think range anxiety for a majority of people is just marketing induced negativity. My interest is in building up the electrical grid without fossil fuel based energy- and that seems to get the least amount of attention.
For the foreseeable future renewables aren’t going to fill the void. Unless we revisit nuclear, and a massive grid upgrade, I’m not seeing how EV’s are going to make anything better. Maybe force everyone on to bicycles……

Waste of time compilation of battery breakthroughs “coming soon”. The only time they mention Tesla the leading EV company in the world is in reference to some lawsuit. They do show all the companies that pay them for advertising in a good light even GM which sold <29 total EVs in q4 2021 and a couple hundred in q1 2022.

These will keep improving every few years. Some of these big ideas may not pan out but each generation of batteries will last longer, cost less and give more range at the same size/weight as the previous batteries. My old boss had one of the original big brick cell phones, the battery lasted 45-60 minutes of use and not even a full day on standby. He had to keep 2-3 batteries at the office, 1 in the phone, and 2 charging and the battery it self must have weighed 1 lb and they could only be recharged a few hundred times.

I hope we new solid state batteries start being massed produced soon but it’s unlikely as it is harder to go from lab to production then people think and the cost is likely to be much higher then conventional batteries. Sodium ion could be useful in large storage but not vehicles as sodium batteries have very high volumetric densities that keep it from being a good option. They can be a good option for grid storage though. It will be years before we see significant production however.

It is just amazing to me the level of incompetence you maintain on EVs year after year. How many years will it take for any of these battery cells to scale to mass production? How will they cost less when the other battery cells have a massive scale of production advantage? Why raise concerns about battery fires without mentioning that ICE cars are WAY more likely to catch on fire? Yeah, you can catch some Tesla’s on fire if you crash them at over 100 mph into a solid object, but the Bolt was just catching on fire sometimes sitting in a garage, and there is a difference there that an honest competent journalist, categories you do not belong to, would have noted.
Tesla is also working on Silicon, and someone with knowledge of EVs would realize that their new 4680 cells promise most of the advantages of solid state but can be produced at massive scale soon, and already in vehicles being made now. One has to consider the entire EV and not just the battery cells too: the 4680 cells become part of the structure of the EV in a structural battery pack, which saves a lot of weight and also allows much more efficient vehicle manufacturing.

Very common error is made in this video .. talking about “energy density”. There is no such thing. There is “Volumetric energy density”, energy per unit volume, and “gravimetric energy density”, density per unit weight. For a car, both are important. A battery with high volumetric energy density (small for lots of energy) is not much good for a car if it weighs 5 tonnes (silly exaggeration for effect). Hydrogen has great (gravimetric) energy density, and awful volumetric energy density – it’s light but takes up too much room unless massively compressed, and the weight of the tanks messes with the volumetric ED. But it’s a CNET video, so you can’t expect too much.

Glad you made that point at the end. People keep pitching an EV by itself as the only scenario, but many households have two or more cars. If you have a cheap second hand petrol car on standby — perhaps something of a very different form factor to the EV — then you can use that other car for the scenarios your electric car doesn’t handle well. Something like a cheap Japanese station wagon could work really well.

Hopefully, years down the road, when all these million and million of batteries are spent, technology will be able to address what to do with these batteries. Repurpose, recycle elements, etc. Society tends to be more reactive than proactive.

1. Many battery packs are already being repurposed for mass energy storage or or off grid where energy density isn’t such an issue as in cars. The packs can last many more years there with more than enough storage for many purposes.
2. There are already start up companies rebuilding packs from vehicles such as Nissan Leafs where Nissan has really dropped the ball but these companies are more than happy to fix them.
3. Because of its sheer size and quantity of units built, Tesla already has companies working toward recycling of packs that are too far gone for reuse. These include salvage vehicles and those whose packs have gone over 300,000 miles, some many more miles still.

Well now Ford and GM are years behind playing catch up while Telsa moves on to new things… its to bad because im a FORD owner and i can clearly see whats happening. PS Telsa laughs when Ford comes out with its First Electric Cars and Trucks and asks buys to get a Mortgage to purchase these vehicles even the Tesla new truck coming soon heard you need to get pre approval for a mortgage to buy one LOL

Having more energy than you need helps in many ways. For one, a battery doesn’t die by being discharged, it’s typically rated in charge cycles. The less time you charge it, the better. With a much bigger battery pack, you can then keep your battery pack at a lower state of charge, say 80%, and you’ll keep your battery better conditioned. My laptop never, and I mean never, goes above 80% charge. Specifically to keep the battery in better health.

I would only buy a EV car if it is 20% cheaper and guarantee the battery would last at least 12 years and take me less than 15 minutes to fully charge.I drive only about 3,000 or less a year and I will not see the benefit to ditch my reliable little car for crappy battery on wheels.

A car that can run on electricity for short journeys and use a generator to keep going on epic road trips would be … well … epic. Too bad the only two such cars ever made, the BMW i3 REX and some GM model, are out of production.

until I pay off my current Vehicle !! if I’m still alive will see about electric cars. all of us with Vehicles right now are in debt already. I like Ev Technology. I just don’t understand the logic behind dictating it to us ?! and it’s so rushing. in my opinion it’s not complete or that dependable either. of course, unless you have an indoor garage with a charging system. these Vehicles are easy to be stolen as well too this is another downside no one is talking about.

Why would companies invest in the charging network, if the main thing everyone is saying is “just charge at home”. These companies have to make a profit. And, please do not be naive to think electricity won’t eventually get expensive. Go to Europe and see how expensive they’re electricity is. We’ll be trading one problem for another! 🤷🏾♂️

Nope, I’d MUCH RATHER take a battery that has a CONSIDERABLE longer LIFESPAN such as Tesla’s 4680 cell (million mile battery pack) than a higher density 20/30% more range with shorter lifespan. Been living with a 300 mile pack for 3 years with occasional long road trips, and never once been an issue, driving seven days a week. Removes the stress of “yeah but what happens when you have to buy a new battery” complaint, lasts as long as the cars lifespan!

I like electric driving. Did a road trip to France via the channel tunnel during half term. There were plenty of good charge stops along the way, usually with toilets and coffee available, and I paid a lot less for charging than I would have with an equivalently powered petrol car, especially at almost €2 per litre! Overtaking on the motorway was also effortless. I doubt I’ll get another diesel or petrol again.

this is also a major reason why EV adoption isn’t as fast : the main part of the EV its batteries are still in the “experimental phase” and early EV adopters are almost like lab rats that are fed this tech….Lastly the part when you said the EV that works for you now would work in theyears to come when it loses battery capacity. Just to be clear the only kinds of cars with a proven ability to last are ICE cars! There are Mercedes cars from the 70s (half a century old) that have clocked well over 1M miles still running today while the Nissan Leaf is an absolute disaster mostly if one was still running today…

Listen to this guy… saying if you own a EV you should also have a gas vehicle for those cases in which an EV won’t work. Until an EV can truly replace a gas vehicle, meaning I don’t have to keep a “spare” gas vehicle around, I’ll be waiting.

Okay, how about our current grid that can barely keep up with current demand. Our area has had two power outages in the past few days with temps in the 90’s. The grid is decades behind.
