Our lives depend on curbing climate change, but so many priorities seem to be in competition. What’s the most urgent thing humanity can do right now? Social entrepreneur James Irungu Mwangi tells us why Africa could be the ideal home for scaling the latest and most ambitious climate technologies — including in places like Kenya’s Hell’s Gate National Park, which could become part of what he calls the “Great Carbon Valley.”

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

Figure out how to lower dependency for you and your family.

    – You can make flour out of acorns

    – Animal horns are pliable when heated. It was what we used before plastic

    – You can make lenseless glasses by poking needle sized holes in basically anything. I’ve been using cut up egg carton bits

    – You can eat every part of a dandelion!

    – Some Lichen are antibacterial and antifungal

    – All you need is a jar with a lid, water, and a potato to make yeast for baking

    – There’s a native source of caffeine on every continent

    – To make a water filter
    Layer top to bottom:
    Rocks
    Gravel
    Sand
    Charcoal

Natural fiber cloth can be added beneath finer layers

remember how the planet was healing during our covid lockdowns
you could barely even call it a lockdown in some places and still it was making such a huge difference

    End Forced Labor
The threat of eviction is a global health hazard
    No more forced relocations!
No more rent on primary properties!
The planet is displacing enough people without our help!

Anthropogenic climate control is a myth. Just watch Tony Heller’s videos. I know you all want to be part of something good and saving the world is very good. But, we’ve had no effect on the climate. The climate changes, all the time, by itself. I rather see more of a focus on pollution. We are poisoning the earth and need to stop! Co2 is a distraction from the real problem of pollution.

I love the idea of a strong Africa being our climate vanguard! Hopefully it will also mean more side investments and more basic wealth and wellness for the African peoples 😎👍

    • Pepijn

      July 16, 2022 at 12:18 pm

We’re all in this together! So the more countries actively pitch in what they can the better.
And it will be an industry, so there are opportunities for economic growth.
Hopefully care will be taken however and have changes be gradual (even though it needs to be ramped up to a massive scale), since too drastic action without taking local politics and economy in account could result in similar situations to Sri Lanka.
Therefore I think an adjusted global climate tax on countries, to pool in wealth to fund projects. In order to balance out inequality could be helpful to to spread responsibilities and increase opportunity.

    • Turtle

      July 17, 2022 at 11:40 pm

Why do you love that idea?

    • Dr. Ricco Lindner

      July 18, 2022 at 4:31 am

@Turtle because it could bring Africa money to realize that and if done right extra money for the respective country. Carbon capture will be much to energy hungry to be easily done in Europe or US. I only hope that they don’t expand it to much in Africa to ruin their soil and not allowing African countries to earn money with it to compensate for the fact that they offer to the work and risk associated with such projects that should be taken by the industrial countries themselves. But if we don’t reduce Carbon (emissions) we are doomed anyways, Africa first. Though I am also afraid that once the world has some significant Carbon capture capacities they developed countries are even less likely to stop emissions. 😒

    • Turtle

      July 18, 2022 at 5:22 am

@Dr. Ricco Lindner you need to be more concise… You lost your own argument in that plethora of words.

    • Dr. Ricco Lindner

      July 18, 2022 at 7:24 am

I don’t need to be more concise, it is just a Youtube comment. The topic is too complex to be put in a few sentences. The speaker is right that Arfica has the necessary energy potential for carbon capture and they may be able to capture a certain amount of CO2 without greater risks for their environment. Still, I am afraid that investors might happily invest to get rid of this topic in their own countries, but try not to invest more than necessary either. So Africa could easily end up again, doing the dirty work and taking all risks if not fighting hard to get additional investments to improve their countries wellfare
