The art is amazing, but “yellow equals white” was an unusual position to take. Ask Asians in America if they believe “yellow equals white.”

I thought he was referring to the general yellow color of Lego minifigures. I read that yellow was intended to be neutral/ambiguous, but the hair and accessories reflected a white appearance for a long time. Minifigures with different skin tones weren’t made until early 2000s, and even then there weren’t many deeper skintone minifigs. There were some athletes, then licensed characters, then Lego Friends, and now there are many styles of minifigure hair available. So when he was playing with Lego as a kid, there wasn’t that diversity in the minifigs. He mentions there is still a long way to go, and wishes for “a liberated future for all people.” So I don’t think he was referring to Asian-American when he said yellow is synonymous with white.

Most artists throughout history usually limited their color palette. Alexander rashanko for example mostly stuck to a limited pallette.
When you want to stand out with a medium anybody can use, You usually want to stick to a color palette that isn’t being used often

The use of the smooth tiles and the color black both bring an elegance to a medium more associated with an amalgamation of color and chaos. There are lots of things to love about the colorfulness, but I like how his art subverts that association. The artistic style works so well with the themes he works in.

LEGO minifigures were originally chosen to be yellow in order to promote the idea of racial neutrality, it has nothing to do with The Simpsons. In fact the writer of Simpsons (Matt Groening) only made his characters yellow to have them stand out more and look more cartoonish. And I guess he didn’t think too deep about changing the color of other characters that weren’t white and especially since they were added later, and tbh any other color pops and creates way more contrast than the beige “white” skin tone. Great artist by the way!

I think he should branch out into color. When I think African art I certainly do not think exclusively black. The black element is there, and prominent, but there is also yellows and oranges and often all kinds of colors. Colors that accentuate the black. But I wont lie, the all black, especially when its got a shine, looks really good.
