How do you design this for ocean travel?

    • Mark

      March 1, 2022 at 4:47 pm

Pen and paper, or CAD software

  2. March 1, 2022 at 8:58 am

Put it in any kind of ocean swell and see what happens. Exciting progress though

    • Peppe Ddu

      March 1, 2022 at 11:51 am

Hydrofoils only work in good weather conditions.
When it gets rough they switch back to “regular” mode.

    • Best

      March 1, 2022 at 12:53 pm

Where do they normally operate these?

    • Candela Speed Boat

      March 1, 2022 at 5:53 pm

We can handle swells up to sizes where regular boats need to slow down. Imagine flying over the waves. Just like @Peppe Ddu says, however, sometimes we also need to slow down.

What it if it breaks. Then what?

    • Candela Speed Boat

We fix it. Just like a regular boat.

Is anything affordable anymore??? Sheesh! I wish these innovators would focus on the main consumer. Everytime I see a new cool innovation it damn near cost a house to get it🙄

    • Candela Speed Boat

      March 1, 2022 at 5:59 pm

Some of us at Candela used to work for Tesla, and the same thing could be said about the Roadster when it was introduced. Rest assured in that our mission is to reduce emissions globally from maritime transport, and that cannot be done by sticking to only one price bracket.

    • REEZY

      March 2, 2022 at 12:34 am

@Candela Speed Boat I get that but if the ultimate goal is to reduce emissions and have a more sustainable impact on the environment then you work to get that product in as many consumers as you can. But in reality, you just wanted to make a cool product 🤷🏽‍♂️

    • CrustyBasterd

      March 4, 2022 at 12:11 pm

@REEZY making something that people want to buy and is cheap and profitable at a low scale just isn’t possible.

    • Oddvar

      March 4, 2022 at 1:36 pm

Innovation is expensive. Just look at Tesla, it took them so many years to finally be able to deliver an electric car for an affordable price for the masses. Same here.

    • REEZY

      March 4, 2022 at 2:47 pm

@Oddvar I understand. I guess it has to start off expensive to be profitable to eventually be affordable for the mass market. I get it. Just hate it has to be that way

  13. Ranga KV

    March 1, 2022 at 11:04 am

I can relate to this, being an EV owner, and great that someone’s working so hard to make our future electric… wishing that this gains mass acceptance and that this would be THE future.

      March 1, 2022 at 11:32 am

Don’t tell me you are vegan as well?

    • ahastar1141

      March 1, 2022 at 6:29 pm

It could gain massive acceptance but when you design products for the highest income bracket, it never really gets mass acceptance because the masses cant access it. Small companies need to target the 1% for margins on R&D but that’s not how you hit the masses who are price sensitive. If electric boats are the future, we’ll likely need to see reliable affordable versions of wake boats, ski boats, and fishing boats. Those are the types of boats the masses are buying and that’s who these manufacturers need to target. Likely it will take someone big like malibu, nautic, ranger, or lund to create something, or partner with mercury or another engine manufacturer to produce it.

    March 1, 2022 at 11:42 am

Very cool. Now they just need to have a better battery life and maybe also solar charging too.

  15. Digital D

    March 1, 2022 at 11:45 am

Do I understand this correctly? The boat battery is less than half the size of the tesla plaid? 44kwh vs 95 for the Tesla. With a larger battery, obviously there is more range. I’m sure this will be upgraded in future models. Love it!

    • ToniSkit

      March 1, 2022 at 12:45 pm

Also more weight so it’s a trade off of needs since they are working on reducing drag

    • Candela Speed Boat

      March 1, 2022 at 5:52 pm

@ToniSkit Exactly. There is a tradeoff in there. We are already achieving record breaking electric range at the speeds that cover most people’s needs.

    • Digital D

      March 2, 2022 at 9:50 pm

@Candela Speed Boat And I love it. I see room on the table. As a tweaker of all things tweakable, Im amazed at the results you’re getting with that capacity. Great!

this is not new technology… the only new thing is electric drivetrain

    • Brandon Yammine

      March 1, 2022 at 1:21 pm

Electric drivetrain on boats isn’t new either. Been around for many many years

    • Candela Speed Boat

      March 1, 2022 at 5:54 pm

Actively controlled fully submerged hydrofoils is a new introduction to the world of leisure boats. Previously, it’s only been seen in commercial boats at a much larger (and easier to control) size.

    • JAYCE

      March 2, 2022 at 9:11 pm

She didn’t say it was new. In fact she said it’s not at 1:25

I’ve been watch Hydrofoil Boats since before I was 6 years old 62 years ago.
….. NEVER ONCE have they ever talked about anything less than PERFECT Weather.
it’s like once the boat is in the water the gods of the ocean smile perfect days forever.

    • Candela Speed Boat

      March 1, 2022 at 5:51 pm

Hey Marvin! We can do well in pretty rough weather, even while foiling. If the weather is too rough, we can go in a hybrid planing mode, which is much more inefficient. We’d love to show you more as soon as we have the opportunity to create more content in rough weather. /Teodor at Candela

What happens when there’s an impact, or sea creature hit without warning from the silent design? It’s neat, but I can see a concern of being 50-70+ mph and hitting something when you’re above the water. Be it a rock, animal or person. An accident is almost certainly catastrophic at that point.

    • Candela Speed Boat

      March 1, 2022 at 6:03 pm

Good question! Just to clarify; the top speed is closer to 35 mph rather than 50 mph.
In any boat at any speed, vigilance is required of the driver in order to avoid collisions and the same is true for the driver of a Candela.

I love that it’s not loud and that it doesn’t slick the water with oil. Wow

    March 1, 2022 at 9:28 pm

I want it to be a saltwater fishing boat.

  23. Rayman

    March 1, 2022 at 9:32 pm

Looks beautiful and a great EV innovation

  24. Phrancis5

    March 1, 2022 at 11:02 pm

I’ve always loved hydrofoils and now that I build flying drones, I agree that an electric foil would be very cost effective for point to point ferry duties, where speed, smoothness, quietness, and maintenance is important, but not long range.

    • insidepossie

      March 3, 2022 at 12:20 pm

what about a “recharge system” from prop movement, so that the battery is always constantly being recharged adding more range. I think only then would it make “PERFECT” sense.

    • Phrancis5

      March 3, 2022 at 4:45 pm

@insidepossie “Prop movement”? You mean like the props turning a turbine to recharge the battery? If so, I’m sure the drag is far greater than the power generated. Solar panels would be better, but even those wouldn’t be efficient enough to keep things charged.

    • insidepossie

      March 3, 2022 at 4:51 pm

@Phrancis5 Yes like turning a turbine. I’m no engineer but I would assume the drag increase would be below 1%, plus both turbine and solar combined would be just as effective.

I hope this company does very well and eventually gets to the point where they can make something like a two person jet ski version of their product.

  26. TruthIs StrangerThanFiction

    March 2, 2022 at 2:46 am

Seems really cool, but…….idk electric + water…. what could go wrong? >.>

  27. 1mezion

    March 2, 2022 at 4:32 am

I wonder if that could be incorporated into a 500 ft. long superyacht or with modification a supertanker

  28. JFG

    March 2, 2022 at 5:34 am

I wonder what it will be like to ski behind, might actually miss the wake…

    • Claire Reilly

      I thought the same!

  29. NAVEEN N

    March 2, 2022 at 3:59 pm

They should add solar panel on top so that it can given extra miles and charger when idle 🖖

  30. Jameel Ja

    March 2, 2022 at 5:37 pm

Now just need batteries to get more energy dense and faster to charge.

  31. Claire Reilly

    March 2, 2022 at 11:22 pm

I have to say, I’ve seen hydrofoil boats before, but there’s something about the C8 rising up out of the water when it gets up to speed that is really cool! We’re hoping to test it out later in 2022, so let me know your questions and we can try and answer them on the next video…

  32. Kongolox

    March 3, 2022 at 4:16 pm

    What about range?

    • Oddvar

      March 4, 2022 at 1:34 pm

It is said in the video.

  33. Rusty Appling

    March 4, 2022 at 7:08 am

can they create a charger in the motor to charge the battery while moving?

  34. Steve Marks

    March 4, 2022 at 6:20 pm

I think this is amazing engineering. My brain cannot really comprehend the cost though. Rather expensive in my opinion… Too small for a millionaire to take out all their rich friends on an afternoon cruise, and too expensive for the family man…

  35. AllProWebTools

    March 4, 2022 at 9:12 pm

But how practical and realistic they are ? I can only imagine that the price is going to be ridiculous and I doubt its sustainability
