You speak far more languages than you realize, says Poet Ali. In a profound talk, he reveals how the idea of “language” goes far beyond a lexicon of words, communicating universal experiences like love, laughter and loneliness — and serving as a portal to cultures, feelings and thoughts that unite us all.

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). This morning I had what I refer to as a great conversation with a very close friend about “language” but at that moment while we interacted more than ever did it occur to me how much I value universality when I comes to language. Because I believe that language goes beyond words, so much to the extent that I have a discomfort being “identified” with particular “spoken languages”……
. I still hope that whenever I speak to anyone, …that I can communicate and connect even when we don’t speak the same language

This is beautiful, I love it, I love the form and you can do wonderful melodies of sentences. You have nice dynamics. But being a fat kid, watching a loved one die by cancer, and being disconnected by screens , and being a minority are all bad, but very diverse experiences…not a good set of examples to argue that “we are all on the same ship”. We are simply not.

Being a minority is a position of compromise? That presumes society will invariably oppress minorities. That’s not true. In many cases, yes. Too many. But not all societies. I was a minority for 22 years working in Asia. I’m not Asian. I never felt “compromised.”

Most the girls in the world are complaining about it,
Most the poems in the world have been written about it,
Most the music on the radio is hitting about it,
kicking about it, or ripping about it,

Most the verses in the game people are spitting about it,
Most the songs in the world people are talking about it,
Most the broken hearts in the world, I know, are walking without it,
started to doubt it, or lost without it,

Most the shadows in the dark have forgotten about it,
Everybody in the world would be tripping without it,
Every boy and every girl would be dead without it,
struggle without it, nothing without it,

Most the pages that are filled are filled about it,
The tears that are spilled are spilled about it,
The people that have felt it are real about it,
A life without it would be lost,

When I’m in it and I feel it, I am shouting about it,
Everybody in the whole world knowing about it,
I’m hurt and broke down be flowing about it,
going about it wrong, because I didn’t allow it,

Can’t a wound or scar heal without it,
Can’t the way that you feel be concealed about it,
Everybody has their own ideal about it,
dream about it, appeal about it.

So what’s the deal about it? Are you about it?
To know that life is a dream and unreal without it?
Everything that you feel is surreal about it,
But I’m just a writer, what can I reveal about it?”

the language of humanity is probably art. classical music doesn’t need description for you to realize if it’s a baroque piece. you don’t even need to learn a language just to understand what that foreign song is all about. and remember that ‘a picture worth a thousand words’ ?

In a part of the United States with more than 17,000 years of human history, cultural preservation advocate Tracie Revis is working to turn the Ocmulgee Mounds into Georgia’s first national park and preserve. This park would be co-managed by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, bringing the tribal voice back to an area they were forcibly removed from 200 years ago. Revis explores the complex feelings of caring for this land and shows how it’s fostering healing in return.
