Are we separate and superior to nature? This question has been a driving force behind humanity’s industrialization and economic progress for centuries — but it’s brought us to the brink of an ecological crisis, says filmmaker Damon Gameau. In an impassioned talk, he calls for a new story that recognizes our interconnectedness with nature and moves towards a thriving, regenerative future.

What he’s saying is true not only if Christianity but all Abrahamic monotheisms. I’m a Hindu atheist from India, while in India we’re taught in school that all religions are the same, they are fundamentally not. Hindu philosophy says the universe is divine, therefore the earth and all living things are divine and not separate from humans. One of the main prayers in Hinduism is let there be peace and balance for all life. I’m not saying it is practiced in a perfect way, today the entire world follows Western notions of development and growth.

Hindu scriptures call our age, the Kali Yuga.. but unlike what Damon mentioned, it would last not a few hundred years but until 430,000 CE. This epoch in “human history” is considered to be full of conflict and sin. Educated in stern western sciences, I heard these mythologies through oral traditions and at the age of 40 now, can’t help but philosophise that we bear the brunt of seeing this Yuga through.. The call for action is futile but must be undertaken simply because it’s dharma. It is important to understand that we are NOT saving mother nature or the earth as mother nature doesn’t care about this anthropogenic blip… we are trying to save ourselves. And that pursuit in itself is futile.

Such a compelling story. Why is he on TED talk telling it though. Shouldn’t he be out in the woods, with no clothes, food or internet (all procured by raping nature, of course), trying to do his part in not succumbing to the capitalist craze of destruction?
