    i wonder what the maintenance on a full electric vs hybrid vs traditional car looks like for this calculation too

      @Greg Kramer Not farther at all. A 5 quart jug of synthetic, which is enough for most engines, is about $30. Add another $10 for filter and maybe $50 for labor, you’re at $100. If you’d like to spend more, go to a dealer, but even then it’s not hard to find dealers with competitive prices. With a coupon, my last oil change was $90+tax for full synthetic at the dealer.

      3 years 5 months on used 2015 BMW i3 & Fiat 500e – BMW needed a dash panel replaced, and the fast charging system fixed, alignment, under warranty. Fiat 52K miles, alignment at same price as gas car. No brake service, no oil changes, no timing belt change, no smog check.

    I dont understand why there is such a huge focus on rural Americans who don’t live near anything when that’s a incredibly small portion of the population. Way more than 50% of people would be perfectly fine with current ev range. Those who need to drive 100s of miles to the nearest Walmart will still have other options.

    I just don’t understand the absolute obsession with 100%, no fuels, pure electric driving. Why??? That comes at a cost. You pay more and you still get less range than a comparable ICE car. What’s worse, there begins a diminishing return on efficiency, doing more environmental harm by carrying around a 2,000lb block of earthly resources.

    If you want electric, a plug-in hybrid is basically an electric car, but it minimizes the electric aspect down to where it only works at its optimum. The rest is handled by a ICE that is also made to work when its optimum. The result allows most people to do 90% of driving in pure electric mode, but it’s cheaper, and there is no concern on range.

    What is the issue with that? Why do some think it’s electric or nothing? It just makes too much sense for some people, I guess.

      PHEV definitely have there place, I can see 1 of these for every 2 or 3 full EVs if people were rational! We take 2 driving trips a year so we may fit in that group. Barely πŸ™‚

      @emdec55 There are a lot of compromises in a PHEV. I am assuming you are serious! You still have an engine and transmission that can fail. Most short trips you are carrying around an engine that does not get used. The price is not much less than a full EV but without some of the performance advantages.

    Why are we moving from one environmentally destructive technology to another when we can make vehicles that can feasibly run on solar, water or even air? I know it might not be feasible right now but neither is becoming extinct. What’s the wiser choice?

    “The Right Amount of Range” is EXACTLY the SAME as a normal non EV car.
    THAT is what people expect and THAT is what EV manufacturers should deliver.

      Why is that? The right range for my wife and I would be about 150 miles. Anywhere in the DFW metro and back, no problem. The EV has a full battery every morning so why would we want more?

      @Greg Kramer I don’t see people asking for combustion cars with a smaller tank because they don’t need all the range that present car tanks offer… Yes, EV range should be exactly the same as a combustion car. Firstly because would decrease the need for more and more chargers. Then, because more range, means longer trips with less stress.

      @Greg Kramer Well I see your point but I think in order to get the whole populous to convert to EV, these companies do have to think about the range. You may not need so much range in a day and that’s fine but you aren’t the norm. There have been days where I’ve had to travel for more than a 100 miles for work and other things to do. Then you have family that like to take trips and they need to make sure they won’t get stranded. In my opinion, right now EVs are being done for those who can afford it and those rarely need to go over 100 miles on a single day.

      @Michael I do not thing the whole populous convert is much of a thought or concern by anyone at this time. That does not mean that EVs will not be over half of new vehicle sales by the end of the decade. Most EVs can do well over 200 miles in one day. That encompasses a lot of people.

    Kind of a list of excuses to not buy an EV and feel good about your gas car, over 3 years owning short range EVs still waiting for these worst case scenarios, no downsides to a gas car? There’s a mindset of dismissal VS wanting to make it work.

    If I can’t drive from DC to Memphis in one day, a day and a half then I don’t want it,

    Two, three, four hundred mile range is great for a SECOND car/truck. but not the primary which has to be able to drive vacations and other long ranges.

    As a Kia EV owner, which can go 240 miles in excellent conditions, you need 300 miles minimum, 350-400 would be perfect. That would make me get rid of my gas backup trip car. With real estate it’s location, location. With EV’s it’s range, range, range.

    Why is this clueless guy doing a review on what battery size EV to buy? I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s getting some side payment from Toyota I have seen his videos before pushing for plug-in hybrids. More envious friendly? Wtf? Maybe he is just mad because he’s driving a $6000 used car and can’t afford an EV.

    My parents drive their Model 3 SR+ every day and have a fast-charger in the garage. It has maybe gotten β€œlow” (50miles left of range) ONCE in the entire year they’ve owned it and have never had to charge using a public charger. Furthermore, they’ve never even charged it to full in order to maximize efficiency and long term battery life… they have it set to only charge up to 75% and to only do so during β€œoff-peak” hours (late night / early morning) to save a little on electricity prices. They also live in the Northeast which has very hot/humid summers and extremely cold winters so the car doesn’t even exist in ideal temperatures all the time… AND they use all of the features including Sentry Mode and cabin temperature protection that use a little power when the car’s not in operation. TLDR: at least with Tesla…. if you use your car normally and charge overnight just about every night….. you will literally never have range anxiety and frankly never even think about it. Not having to stop at the gas stations is a luxury you never realized you needed. Also what they pay for the increased electricity usage is nothing compared to what they used to spend on gas… we’re talking less than half …and that was before gas prices started increasing.

    There is at least 1 segment or group of people the he did not talk about.

    Not everybody can afford to but a brand new cat every 3-6 years.
    There’s even greater amount of people who can’t afford a brand new car, ever.

    Take me for an example.
    Ever since I started driving back in 2003.
    I only owned 2 cars.
    1998 Oldsmobile
    2007 Ford
    I sold my Oldsmobile after about 3 years, repairs where getting very expensive. Wish I would’ve waited for “Cash For Clunkers” (2 more years of waiting).
    Bought my Ford brand new in 2006. Been reliable for the last 16 years.

    I would love to get a brand new car or even a used one.
    I can’t afford either 1.

    That brings me to my next point.
    Batteries degrade over time.

    The bigger (and efficient) the battery is, the longer the in-between times before you either have to buy a new battery ($10,000 to $20,000+) or buy a new ir used car.

    Let’s say electric cars was a thing back in 2006.
    I did what he wanted me to do, I buy a car that has a 60 mile range.
    Fast forward to today, the range would be under 10 miles.

    If I bought a car that has a 300+ mile range, then the range might be 50-60 miles after 15+ years.

    I wish we had more PHEVs like the Rav4 Prime from all competitors. The batteries on PHEVs are usually less than half the capacity of a regular base BEV.
