In a captivating, poetic ode to the beauty and strength of mixed languages, writer Julián Delgado Lopera paints a picture of immigrant and queer communities united not by their refinement of language but by the creative inventions that spring from their mouths. They invite everyone to reconsider what “proper” English sounds like – and imagine a blended future where those on the margins are able to speak freely.

Perhaps it is your Colombian point of view and your experience. I am not native english or spanish. Virtually all the fears and negative emotions you portray here I experienced in the spanish community. I’ve never come across it in English. I would like to make it clear right away that I am talking about the COMMUNITY, not just the SPANISH people who are wonderful people.

So now execpting people to speak proper English is actually racist?! What a dumb example to use! Most people from any country in the world would likely correct you if you spoke their language with a broken accent or in a grammatically incorrect way. The funny thing is she’s still using fluent English to communicate with the audience, so I guess “believe what I say, not what I do.”

Is this a joke? I mean, that’s how language works, to speak in a language you have to use the words of that language. Wonder if the situation was reversed – people butchering Spanish with English words, would she say the same woke BS?

Anyway, the best thing would be for people to unsubscribe from Ted.

  36. Artem Klimov

    June 2, 2023 at 2:32 am

(S)he states non-existing problems or exaggerating a lot. First of all, I’m not a native speaker as well, I moved from Russia to the USA a while ago when barely knew English. And I was shocked of how patient and polite most people were to me!!! Everyone was willing to explain words that I didn’t know, some people helped with pronouncing them more correct. US culture is already very very mixed, multi cultured. The people here grow up among all sort of other languages, races, cultures, and they are taught to be patient! That’s what I learned from my own experience and comparison to other countries (including my native country). Would this person say that you can survive in Colombia speaking, let’s say, Russian and barely speaking Spanish, would no one make a joke at you in there? I doubt it a lot.
Also, his/her statement that languages need to mix and we want more Spanglish is pretty wrong. Languages already mix a lot naturally for thousands of years, many words migrate from one to another, when there is a need for that (no good equivalent in the other language). It’s fine to speak Spanglish between other Spanglish speaking people, but if everyone would make their own mix with their language and force to talk that way, we’ll stop understanding each other. If (s)he will speak Spanglish to me and I’ll reply in Runglish, how are we supposed to understand each other? You can say “well, but you’ll exchange the knowledge and learn each other language”, but what if it’s not my goal at all?! My goal is to be understood when I speak (or write), not to learn a bit of all languages from all around the world.
Also, note that now (s)he speaks pretty good English in this talk. Imagine him/her giving this talk barely knowing English and using 50% of Spanish words. A very few people would stay to continue listening. So… it is important to speak as proper language as you can.

    • RockyPotato15

      June 2, 2023 at 2:31 pm

I’ve taken multiple languages and have my own cultural words from my family. Communication isn’t hard, people can express themselves even with words you may not understand. You don’t have to erase every other language but English for people to communicate effectively. 😅

    • Artem Klimov

      June 3, 2023 at 1:42 am

@RockyPotato15 “people can express themselves even with words you may not understand” – yeah, and they can tell you all sort of bad words and humiliate you with a smile on their face, and you’d think they tell you something nice. I’ve been in situations like this. Language – is a way of sharing information, that function needs to work precisely. “You don’t have to erase every other language but English” – who said that? No one talks about erasing anything. The point is – when you are in a certain country, in a certain place with certain people, you need to speak a certain proper language to understand and be understood, it’s that simple.

    • Takai Akai

      June 3, 2023 at 5:52 am

I think it made a difference that Russians look “white.” You probably passed as the Exotic European, the “good” kind of Exotic. Darker, more olive skinned people get classified as the “bad” kind of exotic. They get presumed to be illegal immigrants today runaway slaves merely a couple decades ago, street thrash both times. I think those preconceptions are what caused the differences between your experience & hers. The sad truth however is that people have heard that story all too often, & they haven’t changed a bit. So she put a different spin on it.

    • Artem Klimov

      June 4, 2023 at 3:51 am

@Takai Akai no, the difference was that I was open to listen and learn, that I adapted to the new culture, new place, and was grateful for people to even accept me. I’ve been taught that there is no place for us anywhere except homeland, that we are hated everywhere, etc (part of Russian propaganda, btw). I didn’t know what’s truth and what’s not. I was nicely surprised, that most people in USA were kind and helpful. Some were giving me free rides when they saw me lost, others were teaching me words, and some even wanted to help with money or food. I quickly grew and made a career here (and I started from cleaning toilets in a motel, btw, all the way to an engineer in Silicon Valley). And though I’m a very successful person now and got my citizenship (all legally, and not even through marriage), I feel slightly awkward thinking that I came to another country, occupied some place and got a very good job that a local native person could have instead. It’s just in my brain, this shyness and discomfort. I’ll probably always feel like an alien, even though locals like and accept me. And I’m grateful! But I didn’t come here pointing fingers and demanding attention, saying “here is amazing me, I’m a kind/queen, accept me and give me your best!”. This person in the video just screams that with all their look, words, message.

    • Takai Akai

      June 4, 2023 at 4:20 am

@Artem Klimov you’ve actually answered your own question. You & the speaker both talk about coming from an environment of adversity. The difference is that you’ve been taught that you have to shut up & figure stuff out while she comes from a culture where people talk & shout to figure stuff out. Quiet adaptation & Loud communication can both achieve the goal you both want. Every approach just doesn’t appeal to everyone. Simple as that. It’s a very cultural thing which approach you take. From what I understand, the people who left Russia were either Old Money or straight up fleeing the soviets so any port in a storm. The Latinos were poor but S America is a very different place than Russia. Being dirt poor can still be more comfortable in the tropics than in a colder place as long as you know how to live off the land. They came to the US for “a better life.” Former Soviets came simply for “a life.” I think that makes a big difference in what expectations the two groups would have from the country they entered. And as the Buddha said, expectations are the root of misery.

“Policed by the teacher and maintained by the students laughter…” a deep revelation for any child at any age. This is the “xray” like vision only a child of betrayal is cursed with. It will help navigate a world full of threats when you are young, but will be a great disadvantage as an adult. I know because I struggle with this every second of every day. Because these xray glasses can’t be taken off.

Okay, okay. I’m not saying they’re wrong. But the first part is just showing one of the many ways racism hurts people: mocking their imperfect use of English.

The other thing is… mate, I’m also queer, but it took me a while to get comfy with the lingo, because unless if I present myself explicitly as queer, the community will side-eye me as someone who wants to ‘enjoy the glittery language’ without respecting what the generations before have suffered through to allow the current generation (in certain areas) to express themselves so colorfully.

Let’s not be naive, if we were all to talk Spanglish, it would be considered cultural appropriation. So, this talk is just a critique on racism. & yes, I agree, mixing languages is an enrichment, but it is not a realistic ideal. There would be a lot of horrible backlash. (& this comes from a bilingual in a bilingual country.)

Everything they said was reasonable. You sure God wants you to cancel people you aren’t willing to listen to..?

Most people’s ears still work regardless or gender; the truth is you’re so bothered by clothing and gender that you gave up on learning. You’ve shut yourself off from different perspectives because you’re afraid of them, probably because of some culture war BS assumptions about gender studies.

God doesn’t hate queer people, you do. You can’t be bothered to listen, which shows a lack of empathy. God wants you to be happy and loved, it’s you who chooses to upset with queer people and feel “🤮”

So I have been browsing all the comments now to this point and it is pretty interesting: The comment section seems to be divided in half. The first half of people seems to be amazed by the talk and they have various arguments on why they are. Also these comments have the most likes on them, but there seems to be over all less of them (the comments) in number. Then there is the other half of people, who seem to be disappointed by the talk and often even seem to feel hurt by it. They mostly don’t have likes on their comments and often people to answer them having the opposite opinion, though there is more of these comments in number compared to the ones I first mentioned. Most interesting I find though: By looking at the user names and profile pictures while leaving the profiles out I couldn’t identify, the first mentioned half seems to be very mixed up women and men while the second half seems to be mostly men. Here I want to point out, that I have been using the word MOSTLY. Unidentifyable profiles are very similar in number on both sides, so I felt like it was ok to not look at them further for now. So I haven’t done any math for now to proof my point and if anyone wants to do it to proof me wrong: Feel free to! I in fact would be glad to be wrong here. Also at this point there is just 133 comments on this video, so it is very possible, that, as time goes on and more comments are added, statistics will change. I don’t want to interpret my impression at this point, but I would love to hear your opinion, explanation or you proofing me wrong on this. I really am curious and I also would love to learn! Also I am not a native speaker, as you might probably have noticed, so I hope you get my point here despite of me probably butchering up words and/or grammar to hopefully not a point, where it gets unreadable.
