When will they be available?
Do not forget that it is of no use if this is not done worldwide. Also don’t forget that worldwide energy consumption in 2050 is estimated to be 50% greater than 2020.

When will large scale be available?

PLEASE look into the other side of the jeopardy equation that you present merely one side of.

when i was her age scientists warned the planet was cooling , thousands were dieing from drought in africa ( remember the fund raising concerts ? ) , hundreds of thousands died from a cyclone in bangladesh , millions were starving in china , the US was killing millions in a genocidal war , life before fossil fuels was impoverished , brutal and short . she is just another spoiled greta wannabe with no knowledge of history , science or engineering .

She dose now her green electric car had its battery’s raw materials mined by effective child slaves? Or her cell phone made by a company that uses force labour in Chinese concentration camps? What about her vegan food that kills all plant and animal life on the field it’s planted on? Do these contribute anything towards climate change?
What about the “green companies “ using band minerals in there solar panels? Or the billionaire who owns most of a country’s farmland who artificially raises the price of food?
These questions are often ignored because they don’t fit the narrative if you want real solutions can we for once have some fucking honesty and not just the same slogans and rhetoric we’ve had for the last fifty years

Ooo I know, some activist pushed the government to do it without real science comparing fossil to nuclear! Stop crying about it and study and do research in new energies. These kids are so unrealistic, go to Africa an experience a poor life and then find a solution for African countries not cooking with wood and coal! Oooo I found it! Helping them to have gas! And maybe after they eat better their kids can do better in schools and in one moment on time they will use electricity if they can afford it!

Not a single substantial solution. Stop this and stop that. We are in a crisis. But we need the speakers to go beyond activism and have true solutions. Building electric power so far has shown unsustainable in the case of EV battery production. We don’t have the time… yet there seems to be a long way to go. So let’s hope mother earth has mercy on us in the meantime…

If you’re not going to mention lamerican military industrial complex and their impact on climate change, you have no room to talk about climate change at all. we could buy ourselves decades of time to figure this one out, if we just dismantled lamerican military, right here, right now. They tell us that China is biggest contributor to mmcc, but they only can come up with that number, if they completely exclude lamerican military from calculation. lamerica, sans it’s military, is barely, fractionally smaller emitter of ghg than entire country of China with its entire massive industry, and its military, all together. But, lamerican military alone, w/o rest of lamerica, is bigger cause of CC than entire China. That means, that lamerican military, plus rest of lamerica together, are more than twice as big cause of CC than China is. So for that reason, lamericans have stipulated that any official body counting contributions to CC or GHG emissions, must exclude lamerican military, as that allows lamerica to safely hide behind Chinese industrial base emissions. So, let’s see, Entire China, and entire lamerica, with its military together, make out the vast majority of GHG emissions and CC. If we look at the three, China, and lamerica sans military, trying to lower these two, would cause massive disruptions in lived of over billion and a half of people, but, shutting down lamerican military would cause no disruptions, and would in fact save millions of lives worldwide, all those places where lamerica is engaged in wars, Syria, Somalia, Libya, Afghanistan (yes, they are still there) Iraq, Ukraine, Yemen, probably some I’m forgetting right now… anyway, all those people would stop getting killed, so, that’s millions of lives saved right away. And getting rid of one third, basically what it amounts to, of GHG emissions and CC causes in one fell swoop, would literally give us decades to figure it out, seeing how China itself was radically decreasing it’s own impact in last 2 decades. lamerica sans military probably couldn’t decrease it’s impact as much as China, as Chinese impact is due to industry, and you can just build better factories, but lamerican impact is due to traffic, and we still have no solution to that. No, EV’s aren’t solving that problem, as EV’s are still charging from the city grid, which is powered by burning of fossil fuels, so, in effect, we’d be getting rid of one third of current CC causes right away, and like half of current causes in short order, thanks to Chinese efforts.
And ppl like this lady, who get a platform to talk about CC, don’t even mention the main cause of this issue, she won’t even acknowledge that we have this solution at our disposal? useless!

The spin on the climate crisis that made me maddest was a comedy dialogue by Bill Maher. He faced the camera and said “I’m Bill. I fly privately”. His whole point seemed to be to undermine the efforts of climate activists like you and Greta and to basically throw up his hands. “What can we really do?” He said maybe I could give up my standup comedy which makes my private plane necessary. @AmUnRA256 that’s may point, cheap energy enabled growth, including fertilizer production (that requires massive amount of nat gas).
But I’m always open for alternative, because it’s easy to say “oil, coal and gas pollute and energy companies are the bad guys”, but what’s the realistic alternatives ? And when can be deployed?

@Arnaud M in the beginning (1800-1900s) it was really useful that these resources were kinda cheap but now we are rich industrial countries and can affort the more expensive but sustainable alternatives. I have no idea if there are already alternatives for the fertilizer part but on the energy side it is only a mater of time and devoution to throw the needed amount of money on that problem. Main problem in Germany for example isn’t the energy production itself but getting the energy from the north to the south (and later from africa / M.E. to europe)

@AmUnRA256 I’m a neoliberal, so I don’t care if industries die because they are not competitive, while it’s quite stupid to penalize some industries in Europe against other parts of the world for political reasons…
And when we see the massive protests in the streets because of insignificant increase in fuel or electricity prices I’m thinking the society is based on low prices and thinking an increase is « fine », it’s misunderstanding the deep impact of energy.
Plus it’s a naive European view to think about decarbonisation without considering India, China, USA, etc
Here we are not even touching the problem of electrification (massive mines in Africa that don’t pollute much less than oil fields) or the lack of metals in regard of the current production…

@Arnaud M China is adopting so fast that there has to be one technological leader to show them how it is done the modern way and they will copy it and sometimes maybe do it even better. Same with the rest of the world, if rich countries share technology, ideas and money we as a whole could change, adapt and save the planet. It is not a competition in the end, when we are all on the same boat. oh and I am with you with dying industries which can’t adapt.

@AmUnRA256 it’s a competition for resources. If we want renewables/batteries, there is no way to get enough metal for all (and as I said, quite polluting mining resources).
China economy is based on cheap energy (that’s the reason why they generate electricity mainly from coal), they don’t have any reason to go to more expensive renewables.
The problem is not about money but return. Why to invest in expensive energy generation if competing against cheap one… economics 101
Frankly speaking, I’m not convinced it’s cheaper to transition to renewables than to adapt to a new world 2 degrees warmer and less stable climatically

I think this pandemic has taught people the importance of multiple streams of income, unfortunately having a job doesn’t mean financial security. I really appreciate the transparency and giving people a fighting chance during this troubling times.

@Thomas Golden I totally agree with you. I see a lot of young and old making mistakes that I don’t think they should. I believe everyone should have an investment plan that improves their financial stability. The investment can be your retirement plan or your future plan, whatever you want, but the most important thing is that you have an investment plan that pays off.

@danv kaann You are right! I lost my Job during the pandemic, I lost almost everything I had including my savings. I started an investment which today is the reason I have my own business.

2 years ago, I started off with about € 17,000 investing in FOREX and stock market, with Mrs Alicia Seda Rich managing my investment portfolio, now I’m worth a little over 500k. investing works if you are willing to put in the hard work.

I agree with you 100%. Did you know that the unemployment rate increased significantly between 2020-2021. people found themselves unemployed. we should not depend solely on wages and salaries.

I know this is only 10mins, but there is no content here, just rhetoric. What are the ‘fairy tales’? Show your working. Stuff like, fossil fuels = Putin, is not an argument for green technology. So you’re saying energy can be abused? Of course it can. So can everything else. So what? This kind of low level of discourse seems all too common among green ‘activists’ and it should encourage everyone who eats food and likes being warm to require governments and institutions to ask serious questions about the credibility of their ideology. Demonising fossil fuels whilst ignoring their benefits isn’t honest. Nor is pretending that wind and solar etc are magic solutions. They aren’t magic solutions, and will require enormous amounts of minerals to be mined, far and above what ongoing hydrocarbon discovery and extraction needs. This isn’t ‘green’. We need honest and informed public debate about the implementation of policies which are going to radically inflate fuel and food prices for billions of people who can’t afford for those prices to rise, and end personal transport (i.e. freedom of movement) for all but the elite. By the way, chances are, you are not part of that elite.

That isn’t how war spending works. If there weren’t fossil fuels it would just be a different industry funding all those things.
Adding flair for dramatic effect undermines credibility in my opinion, especially when you’re not offering sources but anecdotes as your evidence.

TED shouldn´t promote political agendas. Luisa is a politician of the Green party in Germany and the face of Fridays For Future. I love to have an open-minded exchange of ideas but don´t need another outlet for political motivated statements.

The greatest trick the fossil fuel industry ever pulled was making people believe that it is the individual’s responsibility to clean up the planet. Community-led climate action is a fiction and it will fail, just as the oil industry intended.

Society is at a precipice of things to come due to our own making.
We have, for a very long time, managed to let corporations and misguided politicians (some simply corrupt, greedy for profit and power) dictate of what happens in various countries and on this planet of ours. All in the name of “Growth and Profit”, enrichment of the very few and mass manipulation of the rest.
And that is a global problem.
According to science there have been several mass extinctions. Those (as far as we know) were “acts of god”. This one will be of our own doing and the people in charge, voted in or promoted in, will be the ones bringing it about. Unless the people – all the people – open their eyes to see what is being done and not what is being said. Start looking at consequences of what people do, all people do and are willing to do, to make a living or in the pursuit of money and power.
Everyone has to look at themselves, what have I / you done, what are you, what am I doing, today, tomorrow, to make a difference. To stop food from being poisoned, the environment from being wrecked, consumption destroying the planet, people being killed in name of whatever senseless cause, right or ritual or simple stupidity we as human beings can conjure up.
The countries, corporations, political organizations, religions are made up of people, those people must be participants in all the things that harm others in order for a country, corporation, political organization, religion, gang, group to do those things. From the cleaning lady to the president, all the people in an organization, political or corporate or otherwise, have to be willing to sacrifice any or all of us in the name of money or some sort of gain. Without that, it cannot happen.
Many will say or actually believe that they do what they do for the right reasons, for the betterment of human kind, the betterment and protection of whatever “club”, group, they belong to at that time. Some do what they do simply for survival, to feed themselves and their families. But all of us, every single one of us, will feel the impact of what’s to come. And no matter how much money has been amassed by whoever or whatever, it will not protect them.
And once the planet had time to rebuild after we are all gone, maybe then Mother Nature will come back with Humanity 3.0 and try again. Hopefully that version will be more deserving of what they have been given then we have proven to be.
