You would think if it ever tumbles and lands upside down, it would have wheels/rollers opposite the current ones, so it recovers quickly. But who am I? lol

A good question! The reason is adding wheels on the body would raise the center of mass and make it more likely it would tumble. Also weight is a very valuable commodity, lifting up a single pound more is a lot more fuel and effort. And lastly if it did flip the solar panels and mast would be in the dirt. So there wouldn’t be much to recover. But don’t worry the suspension on the perseverance rover for example is super robust and can handle up to 45 degrees (but operates a lot lower for safety margins), and the rovers do a slow crawl so if there is any possibility of tipping they stop early.

@abomb899 Right. Just like the CoG here on earth. Also, to combat any event of a roll over or flipping upside down. They could make the wheel/tire package taller than on normal vehicles(yes, tall enough to surpass the roof line). Which means even if it flips, it will always land right side up. You know, like the toys we played with in the 70s/80s..

And clean its own solar panel – which is its lifeline basically.. otherwise rovers just keep dying because of battery all the time.. what kind of a Duracell freaking problem is that for something that costs billions to send into space and onto another world..

A robotic arm would be very complex and add a lot of weight, you’d also need spare parts and have a way to jack it above the ground. Thankfully rover wheels are very robust and the ones you see here are a metal alloy mesh, so they are really durable. That’s why they are doing a ton of testing here first, it’s a lot easier building it right the first time than fixing in space. They also do a lot of panning and slow movement on mars just to be extra carful not to risk any damage. Unfortunately dust storms are one of the tricky things you can’t avoid though.

I find this video frustrating. While the topic is very interesting to me, there’s way too much to read on the screen while the clips go by at the rate they do. Do you want me to read or do you want me to see the rover prototype in action? I have to keep pausing to absorb both, so I stopped trying halfway through. 😑
