Trauma surgeons are pretty hardcore. I was stabbed in the abdomen similarly to the guy in 1917. There was actually way more blood than that, I was soaked in like 30 seconds. It kinds gurgles and bubbles out of you. And while slightly painful I could walk and talk. I don’t know what my skin looked like but I do know getting stabbed at least for me wasn’t like I was going to die in 60 seconds. I felt fine all things considered. Wasn’t until later after surgery did it really hurt.

John Wick’s wound was not a GSW. It was a deep stab wound.

I hope Annie is doing well. Great to see her doing a video again. I remember her COVID vlogs for WIRED; seemed like she was having a very stressful time working in a hospital during COVID.

I need her to come here to PA. An Amish girl is going to saw my head off with a plastic butter knife. (I used to flirt with her mom & 2 aunts before they got married).
I can thread my head back on just can’t do a surgeon’s knot. Also, she’ll be able to tell if I put it back on right side up.

1:45 – To be fair he likely COULDNT choose to “just” get shot into his leg/arm, cause if he did so, the people/organisation may wouldnt have “bought it”. On the other hand are gunshoots around his upper body more believable as an outcome of 2 guys trying to kill each other.

The tripodding… I saw my wife do that as they had COVID in April 2020. They were struggling to breathe that night, but they also have anxiety and we couldn’t quite differentiate. Would this also happen with panic attacks? Anyway, we never went to the hospital, cause my wife was young and healthy, and the authorities kept saying that only true respiratory distress people should go to the hospital. We got real lucky, my wife recovered (except for their sense of smell). I spent two sleepless nights watching them to make sure they were breathing. It was so scary.

I’m not a doctor but I can tell you this much: Hollywood world has it where getting shot in the shoulder is the least dangerous place to get shot and in real life that is just about the last place you’d ever want to get shot. One main reason is.. well, you know that mandatory ‘heart’ thing, it turns out its like reallllly close to your shoulder area and definitely doesn’t do well with metal and bones shards screeching around wiping out the massive mandatory arteries coming off it. Shot in shoulder = REALLY BAD PLACE.

Just my 2 cents on the John wick segment when he shoots the doctor.

I think he wanted to be shot in a bad spot to make it more believable. They aren’t going to believe that he shot the guy and missed every important as good as a shot as he is.

23:54 I do wish they could elaborate some scenes for proper context so Annie could explain it more accurately. In that scene, the surfer was injured by a shark bite, the shark is aggressive and the surfer is stranded on a rock, etc. I would love to hear Annie explain what the best course of action would be in that situation!

Not a gunshot wound, but I had s benign (thankfully) tumor growing right behind my clavicle. At 20 minutes, I’m sure ecmo is not supposed to be used that way, but that’s what tv is about, looking at fringe cases, I’m sure many doctors would try it instead of letting their patients die. Tv shows are obviously not about the ideal way, but can this solution be 100% excluded?

I’d be in trouble under her questioning. I rarely know what day it is unless I can look at the corner of my screen. Heck I’m not even sure what year it is anymore. 😩

My first night working in a civilian hospital we were doing our orientation when two individuals were brought into the ED with approximately identical GSWs to the lower right quadrant. One walked out of the ED that night with a bandage. The other had to go up for a laparotomy, and then another the next day because there was another bleeder. I don’t know what the final outcome was on either patient.

I would like to add that PPE, in any industry I’ve worked is never a “Eh maybe I’ll have my PPE.” No never, you always have your PPE for the job, weather you’re welding, testing cracks in pipe, cleaning a toilet, or handling fiberglass. You just have it.

I really don’t like her attitude and her allover behavior. But once the video reached 14:20, her whole attitude changed. Everything she said was spot on, everything she said was right and aligned with everything I witnessed so far

I wish they’d give more context for these clips because anyone who’d watched John Wick 3 knows that isn’t a gunshot wound it’s a stab wound. I mean she still makes good points but still, context.

I would expect, that even without a ventilator shortage, putting patients on ventilators should always be a last resort. That’s what we see all the time in the ICU. That’s why respiratory therapists exist as well – to titrate ventilatory and breathing support settings accordingly.

As a brand new Spanish-English medical interpreter, I appreciate the shoutout to interpreters! It is in the civil rights act that everyone has the right to an interpreter at no cost to the patient to any language of their choice in any healthcare encounter (including chaplains and hospital financial services)! also thanks for iterating that it’s NOT translating!

The rebar injury is probably based on Phineas Gage, I guess this is what she is referring to when she says ‘stranger things have happened in real life’. A massive iron rod penetrated his skull and destroyed a decent chunk of his brain, but somehow he didn’t even lose consciousness, survived for 12 more years and despite some behavioural changes, he lived a more-or-less normal life.

Most Hollywood medical scenes are over-dramatized, though some were understated. One aspect overlooked was anesthesia and the interaction in re the surgery. Though uncommon, many physicians have run out of time in the OR due to hospital pressure and/or the limitations of anesthesia, especially in the past. Some of the most difficult surgery (or so we think) is actually not so. It was discovered that a cardiac equipment sales man would be invited and even performed the transplant, or so legend goes…Finally, the OR nurse is as important, or more, than the lead physician. Opening and closing are crucial for positive results, normally ignored on screen.
