On July 20, 2012, a mass shooting in a movie theater of Aurora, Colorado left the town, and its nation, reeling. To many — including Tom Teves, who lost his son in the tragedy — the news coverage that followed focused on all the wrong things. Why did the reporting overwhelmingly fixate on the shooter rather than the lives of the victims or the heroic efforts of first responders? With urgency and measure, Teves calls for responsible media attention that acts in the interest of the public (instead of profit) by revoking what shooters want most: infamy.

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design — plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more. You’re welcome to link to or embed these videos, forward them to others and share these ideas with people you know. People writ large don’t know what they want. You can cite as many surveys as you want, the fact of the matter is that while “people SAY they want to see less coverage of shootings”, “more positive news”, or anything else, the news media publishes what gets read… and that’s what gets read. If you want the news to report with a conscience, the answer is to remove the profit motive out of the equation, not to write to their CEOs.

The mass shooters desire attention, the problem is, that the media desires it to. That’s why the greedy media will probably never turn that way of delivering news

The media needs to put the shooter on a pedestal in order to push their agenda: profit, gun control narrative, more profit… To be clear: gun control proponents, gun rights proponents, and the media ALL. MAKE. MONEY from tragedy. They want more. They need it. Biden NEEDS to put a gun in a crazy person’s hand so he can profit from the incident. Trump needs that guy for the same reason, so he can profit off the fear of law-abiding gun owners as well… The media is the economic engine of the argument. Expect very little to change.

I had been thinking about this recently, based on an article I saw that said mass shootings haven’t been happening since the pandemic. This is good, but we shouldn’t rest on our laurels. Setting up systems and procedures like he’s talking about is important, because it’s not bound to stay like this forever. We need to focus on healing/fixing the root disease that causes people to do these horrendous acts in the first place.

  20. Rebecca Leeman

Some people think this year 2020 has had way less mass shootings.
    Thats actually not true.

Most people are probably unaware of this from reliying on MSM.
But MSM has been busy with coronavirus news and other alarmist trends. Plus MSM prioritizes the massive shootings over mass shootings.

A mass shooting is 4 or more killed. And 2020 has had more of those than any previous year. The month of July alone had a record breaking 95 mass shootings. Thats at least 380 people killed by mass shootings in a 30 day period.

Sorry to burst anyones bubble but we need to be informed of the realities of life in the USA.

Thank you Tom for sharing the story of a hero. I will forever remember that Alex is a hero. I cannot agree more, I first heard about the media influence on the increase in mass shootings from NPR News a few years ago. They had gotten data from scientists concluding the same problem you shared in this video. In conclusion, they decided it was the duty of the media to report it, even though they know it will increase the likelihood of more shootings.

    August 19, 2020 at 1:10 am

I did research on mass shooters for my book: “The Conscience of An Agnostic,” which is listed on Amazon. A number of these shooters gave clear warning signs. For example, Nikolas Cruz, the Parkland shooter, had depression, autism, and ADHD. He had been transferred six times in high school. He was like the hot potato that nobody wanted to touch. They knew that this kid was a mess. Same thing with the Columbine duo, the Virginia Tech killer, and the Sandy hook killer. So what’s up with our mental health professionals?

I feel his pain, but I am sorry, I don’t think this is going to do anything. If the damage is big enough, people will know their name. The more impact an event creates, whether good or bad, the more popularity it gains, that is the unfortunate reality. If you censor out their name, people will go look it up. Also, counting on responsible journalism in the age of click-bait? Not gonna work, a big part of the journalistic world is a sensationalist race to the bottom, and has nothing to do with responsibility. Don’t publish his name? That means less clicks and the media that does publish his name will take your place. So how hard a struggle it may be, the only solution is fixing the root cause: the gun debate and the mental health and other societal and cultural conditions. Why do other modern western countries don’t have this crazy amount of school shootings? Not because they censor names.

He’s rigth, last year a mass shooting happened in my own country, two men broke into school and killed ten children, some people said that they were inspired by columbine shooting in 1999, By the way I believe the shooters became more famous than children, It’s so sad and after all some people believe that the men were victims of bullying many years ago, which led to the mass murder .

Many of them were also obtained illegally. All gun restrictions do in America is make it more difficult for law abiding citizens to get guns. A friend of mine purchased a part online for a gun he was assembling. Turned out owning that part is punishable by jail time and a $10,000 fine, so he returned it. Anything legal/illegal is available at your finger tips in America. You probably don’t hear about all the shootings that are stopped by armed citizens here. It’s more often than not. America doesn’t have a gun problem, it has a severe mental health problem perpetuated by many facets of our society.

Homestly, people like mass shooters and murderers, rapers what have you, should have no legacy. They have forfeited and revoked their humanity by denying that of others, we should forever forget their mames, not out of anger pra hate but out of good of our Memories. They dont deserve a place in the Future they took from their victims. Columbine killers, that austrian Man, that french emperor, that russian dictators, they do not deserve a legacy

I agree 100%. It took a lot of strength for this father to make this speech and organise the campaign and we should not let his sacrifice of repeating the details about the worst moment in his life go to waste.
I never wanted to see the video of a killer bragging about killing, whether it’s a teenage high school shooter, a white nationalist, or Islamic terrorist and judging by the response of the audience and people in the comments neither did they.
It’s amazing that news organisations have not already implemented a policy like this themselves voluntarily, it shouldn’t take a campaign of complaining to the new organisation and their advertisers for them to do the decent thing.

  67. Melesniannon

    August 21, 2020 at 3:12 pm

I agree with the man but here’s the problem: we did not get here by accident. Media, did not get to this point by accident. People don’t really care about being informed, they care about being apprised of what they consider to be important. What they consider to be important, is what they react to most strongly. And everybody reacts more strongly to bad news than to good news.

The reason that media puts out the most sensational stories in the most provoking way possible, is because it sells. The reason few large media outlets bother with anything else, is that those who tried simply got outcompeted. The customer demanded violence and death. The customer got what they wanted. It’s the basic underlying psychology of people, the deviant is always more interesting than the normal. A shooting happens, people don’t ask “Which completely normal/average person got killed?”, they ask “Who’s the crackpot with the gun, why did he do it, and did they get him?” We have nobody but ourselves to blame for what the media does.

So if, in a hypothetical case, current media companies were to change their ways and change the subject they’d report, the same thing would happen as it did before. Somebody else will report it instead, and whomever does first will draw the largest crowd because people will always seek the abject experience of touching the underlying horror.

These weak Democrat politicians wanting to defund the police and the cops chillin’ back, the street gangs are seeing this as the best time to carrying out their street justice and retribution and to go out shooting Rappers and homeless people and going out lootin’. Murderers can get out of jail free with zero bail so the Gang shootings are skyrocketing in every major Democrat run city from ChIraq, NYC, Detroit, DC, LA, Philly, St Louis, New Orleans, North Carolina, Cincinnati, etc. So many shootings that people are placing bets on which city will have the highest gang shootings for 2020!!! I am betting on NYC but which city are y’all bettin on?!

Shame on the mainstream media… They should be sued for aiding and abetting these mass shooters.

Is there anyone else to blame besides the media….and every individual who watches the garbage they promote? If we stop watching it, they’ll stop showing it. It really is that simple. The media is a business. Money drives it. Ratings drive earnings. Watching it drives up ratings. Just stop turning it on.

We have to highlight, so that we stress the need for stricter gun control laws. We’ll continue highlighting until the right wing politicians act. Highlight we’ll do.

Pathetic at best. Gun control measures need to be stricter. Bloody right wing propaganda.

In a part of the United States with more than 17,000 years of human history, cultural preservation advocate Tracie Revis is working to turn the Ocmulgee Mounds into Georgia’s first national park and preserve. This park would be co-managed by the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, bringing the tribal voice back to an area they were forcibly removed from 200 years ago. Revis explores the complex feelings of caring for this land and shows how it’s fostering healing in return.

Hundreds of millions of migrant workers travel within their countries to seek out means of survival — often leaving behind all they know for months or even years. Many face poverty and exploitation, and they need a robust social safety net to protect them, says migrant advocate and 2023 Audacious Project grantee Ashif Shaikh. He shares how his grassroots organization Migrants Resilience Collaborative is making life-changing benefits like social security and health care accessible to those who need them while also amplifying migrant voices — paving the way towards a world that supports the workers actually building it. (This ambitious idea is a part of the Audacious Project, TED’s initiative to inspire and fund global change.)
