I believe the thinking behind implementation of the under display camera on Z Fold especially for the selfie camera that sits on the folded screen is because that camera will be mostly utilized for video conferencing since the under display camera tech, from what we saw so far, still not very good quality. And if one wants the absolute the best selfie quality, can use the camera that sits on the cover screen or even better use the full triple rear camera set. Packing this tech on their bread and butter slab phones will definitely ruin the experience of taking selfie since there’s no other ideal camera options that can be used unlike their big foldy boy. My 2 cents

Is there a cover that can keep it safe when it falls?
I have dropped my samsung Note encased in Spigen hybrid from 5.4 ft and it still works just fine. Scratchless and without cracks.
If I get that functionality in a fold, I’ll gladly buy it.

Samsung: “We are coming out with our 3rd generation foldable phone with a hidden under the display camera.

Apple: We are coming out with our 5th generation iPhone with a smaller bathtub notch. (X,XS,11,12,”13”)

Im gettin the fold 2 cheap cause i dont take selfies so dont care about camera, under display camera is cool but the outer screen still got a punch hole so i dont care about that, and s pen is negligible unless you need to draw something for a job during call meetings. I have note 20 ultra and i barely used the s pen. If i wanted better camera i wouldve gone with s21.

Under-display camera is such a waste of research and development. Nobody even remotely serious about taking pictures or video use the crappy front-facing cameras. Also, on the fold, you can literally fold the phone to use the superior cameras and to see yourself. Also, are “selfies” still a thing? Like, people still do those?!

Since that foldables are not water resistant, why not have it in pop up camera 📸?

  30. Ant Boogie

    May 6, 2021 at 6:19 am

I don’t care if the quality of the front facing under display camera isn’t that great. As long as I can unlock my phone with it I’m okay.

iphone is done. Samsung just a bomb on the Smartphone world that the old ancient design iPhone cannot compete. This phone got it right and is pack with the most Innovation since the note started it all 10 years ago

I’m happy with my Note 20 Ultra for now and I’m hoping to hang onto it until foldables are out of beta, so to speak. Probably a Fold 4 for me.

+CNET I already have a folding smartphone – The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G. I’ve had it now for just under 5 months now and it’s holding up flawlessly durability wise.

    • Don Callahan

      May 7, 2021 at 2:45 pm

@iyaz akhtar Yes, I use the main screen through the day every day. I go back and forth between the two screens. I use the cover screen mainly for social media. I watch videos mostly on the main screen.

I am going to wait to see if they release the tri-fold phone. I am also waiting to see if Microsoft can upgrade the Duo 2 into something that would be comparable to the Samsung Fold. I have a Note 20 Ultra now, so it would take something pretty amazing to get me to switch.

who really cares about UDC … when ppl are screaming about a wider closed display …. samsung is clearly taking the piss due to huawei not being a threat … sad day

    • iyaz akhtar

      May 10, 2021 at 5:44 pm

Hmm. Interesting point. I think the UDC may be a way to test the feature on a device that will have a lot of other cameras. Fold users know they are buying an experimental machine, so they may be more tolerant of issues.

I’m down for the fold 3 if the back screen is like a regular s21 ultra screen.

  43. rubenrar1

    May 6, 2021 at 7:44 pm

I used to be for under display camera, until a few years ago there was a phone with a pop-up selfie camera, and it would pop up in times when it was not being used and they found out some of the developers were spying, I still remember the video and it was pretty funny but yeah I changed my mind I’m good, but I’ll be very generous and let you guys have it lmao, I like to know where I’m being spied at.

So much great new technology. Cameras hidden behind screens- imagine how useful governments will find that!

  45. SW

    May 6, 2021 at 8:03 pm

What is the big deal about an under-screen camera? Actually, it does not even need a camera on the inside screen. What it really needs is an under-the-screen fingerprint reader. The one on the side scan is hard to use and not reliable. The idea may be on the side it will unlock or being useful for both the front and inside screens, but it does not work well. It is terrible. I rather have one reader on the front screen that works.

  47. Ladds

Come on guys, Z fold 2 had been released 8 months ago. Why would you expect z fold 3 so fast? There is no possibilities for that.

    • iyaz akhtar

      May 7, 2021 at 1:36 pm

Samsung quickened its cycle on phones recently. Also, it’s possible for the company to introduce the device, but not have it available for a month or two.

    • Ladds

      May 7, 2021 at 6:30 pm

@iyaz akhtar I would agree but, they had big event at 28 of april. There is no room for anything else

    • iyaz akhtar

      May 10, 2021 at 5:46 pm

@Ladds I respectfully disagree. It seems like Samsung is having more events to stay in the news cycle. They’ve already had 3 events, which is pretty unusual.

S-pen has a rubber slightly runded tip… And also there is a plastic tip that’s also slightly runded. But a plastic screen would still easily take damage

  52. isaias valenzuela

    May 8, 2021 at 4:49 am

It all depends on the price and the quality the fold has been getting better. $2000 ÷ 24 month=83 a month plus insurance for that price i would expect quality!

Currently have the z fold 2 and using a cheap stylus from Amazon. No dents or marks… Not sure the brand but it was about 20 bucks. Gonna skip the fold 3 and wait for the 4

  60. Steven Mancera

    May 9, 2021 at 2:52 pm

Will the S Pen be inside the bottom of the phone, or will it be magnetically attached and an external S Pen?

Also they better still have that Gold color option for you to flaunt that price tag you’ve paid on that model 😤

  61. Steven Mancera

    May 9, 2021 at 2:56 pm

Drop the stupid Z naming. Nobody loves that naming, nor pronounce it. They just call it Fold or Flip.

So instead they should go ahead with Galaxy Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip 3 brand naming.
