Countdown is a global initiative to champion and accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal is to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 in the race to a zero-carbon world — a world that is safer, cleaner and fairer for everyone. Every person, organization, company, city and nation is invited to collaborate with Countdown and take action on climate. It is a movement open to everyone — and everyone has a vital role to play.

Countdown is part of a broader series of actions and events this fall, all with the collective objective of informing and activating millions in the lead-up to a successful UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November 2021.

Not really, as a chemist and scientist, we have not addressed a very important topic. Chemical processes to built solar panels, wind turbines, electric cars and so on…are the use of resources needed to shift to a more sustainable lifestyle possible without continuous destruction of the environment? How do we engage the whole world and have all if not most close to now 8 billion beings in this planet to change our ways towards those goals? Hopeful thoughts are wonderful, looking forward to a sustainable world with positiveness is a great thing but, are we facing reality? Or are we just blinded by our hopes and dreams and lying to ourselves by not facing the realities required to really have bright future? Please do not see these few questions as pessimistic but as legitimate questions to plan ahead on right path….

@cthejoker We do need to do something about climate but the people who are pushing it are not being 100% honest. So far most of the sustainable option out there are not as reliable as fossil fuels. Personally i’m all for Nuclear energy but that has its problems too.

We don’t have the capacity to change the global climate. We’re only seeing NATURAL swings in climate just as there have been for thousands of years. There will always be Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. Don’t drink the leftist propaganda kool-ade, think for yourself!

Every parking lot needs to have a solar array. This would likely be enough room to provide enough power our current lifestyle, it would massively reduce urban heat issues. Plus add chargers for electric vehicles.

If you want to cut emissions, stop flying (which I love). Since that’s not going to happen, everything else that is done is just a waste of everyone’s time and effort. Politicians know this and they just go around it. Besides, they get a fat check for doing it. We just get opinions based on what someone else tells us, which is always a lie. Leave the car industry alone. You can eliminate cars (which I love) completely and not much will change (emission wise). Electric cars (which I hate) are another lie. Lies, lies, lies… So, at the end of the day NOTHING WILL CHANGE FOR THE BETTER. They will get rich telling lies and we will fight each other, over opinions that are not true. Over and over and over.

Consumer waste is a very small percentage of the problem. However a large portion of industrial waste from mining and manufacturing is still due to consumerism. We need companies to get out of planned obsolescence cycles and make products (Cars, Phones, Computers etc.) that last; but that wont happen without legislation because its more profitable to make products we throw away and replace every few years. Additionally consumers need to use less, reuse more and recycle as we have been told for decades and clearly took to heart… If its not psychologically and physically easy the consumer wont transition, and if its not economically profitable businesses wont get on board. Still we can’t point fingers and say “The US will clean up when China does”, or “I’ll do better when the companies and CEO’s do.” We all have to be crew on the spaceship earth and do our part. I’m just not sure how we get people to that conclusion emotionally, intellectually or socially when so many can’t or for political/financial/other reasons wont even trust the 99% consensus of all scientists and the 100% consensus of Active climate scientist that tell us this is a real issues caused by and exacerbated by human actions.

The market system does not take into account of demand by future generations for a habitable environment. Can this demand be built into our “supply and demand” economic system? Can the UN invent a new currency that applies the appropriate taxes and subsidies but can be introduced gradually by adjustment of the conversion rate with other currencies? Also, manufacturers have to be responsible both for the making and dismantling of their products, i.e. a rental system from raw materials to the end of life of a product. How can this be done? I am not an economist but we must find some way of turning round a system that relies on producing more and more with no regard to the fate of products or the energay wasted by planning for obsolescence.

Great ideas. But not practicable add if now. We need prompt action of a revolutionary kind.

    • craig donovan

      November 1, 2021 at 9:41 am

Alright Peter lets be honest with each other “UN Currency”? the UN is one of the most Corrupt Organizations on the planet,
Oil for food wasn’t even 10 years ago, if were going to fix these problems its not going to be threw Government Intervention,
its going to be threw Innovation of private business, just look for yourself at the space industry, NASA is now a political organization while space X is taking people to space. more government isn’t the answer everyone knows it…

    • Peter Brown

      November 1, 2021 at 10:11 am

@craig donovan Yes, I am not optimistic about the UN but it is about the best world organisation we have! The question is how to incentivise private businesses (and academic research, etc) to act for the future of the planet. The market responds to the demand of the present generation for material well-being, this demand being encouraged by businesses trying to make money. Demand by future generations is not part of the picture. Manufacturers make money from selling goods with no obligation to consider what subsequently happens. There has to be investment in a “circular economy” such as the rental system that I suggested. The economic system has to be adjusted to make greenhouse gas production to be uneconomic and for removal of these gases and clearing up pollution to be very profitable. Then sit back and watch private business do its stuff! The currency suggestion seems to be a way to introduce a reversal of the market system over a few years as it cannot be done overnight.

    • Peter Brown

      November 1, 2021 at 10:15 am

@Suman Rao I think that reversal of the economic system is pretty revolutionary, but I understand that it is practically difficult. I think we need to preserve as much democracy as possible!

At the end of the day, I am more concerned about how all this talk might eventually affect my classic car hobby (from a legislative standpoint), than I am about climate change itself.
People today think entirely different than I do. It’s like I don’t even recognize the world I grew up in anymore.
“Let’s cancel culture all the things that I care about in the name of so called saving the planet.”
That’s really the only message I got out of all this. And to me, that’s 10x’s scarier than the temperature rising 2°C.

Well, to all of you nay-sayers and negative people out there, you have to give Countdown an “E” for Effort at least! At least they are trying to change our paradigm. We have to start somewhere and I think this is a great place to start! However, if we don’t hold our politicians to their commitments all will be for naught. That is, we and all of the animals and fauna will become extinct and that’s no laughing matter! I have often wondered why overpopulation hasn’t made it to the top of the conversation?

LOL. And all the so called climate change pusher travel the world in private jets and cruisin around in armered vehicles with motorcades. Like there are no eco friendly options killed in the past and present. Get lost with this BS propaganda. LETS GO BRANDON!

This was epic! This is still ringing in my head! Blockchain Energy Sector is looking promising! Projects like KlimaDAO and Energy Web Chain have been killing it! Next step I hope is to create universal profiles that exist on chain, and decarbonize cryptocurrency. After that, we can begin taxing citizens to incentivize offsetting carbon footprint. Track and trace purchases on the blockchain through NFTs, and must offset those transactions! It’s coming! Offset early!

    1. Recycling doesn’t mean a thing. Once it reaches the garbage processing facility. Most of it is thrown of anyway. Just because it can’t be recycled.
    2. Where is everyone’s Single Solar panel grid tied system on their home or their apartment?
    3. Why aren’t you sorting landfills every weekend.
    4. Why do you continue to buy NEW cell phones constantly?

The real thing is. is folks are a bunch of virtue signaling twats. If the climate disaster is as real as people try to make it out to sound. Why are folks NOT blaming themselves FIRST?

So, the scientist came to the point that we should reduce cattle numbers and livestock activities to reduce the Methane level in the atmosphere. Thanks to religion Islam. We have the custom to sacrifice millions of Cattles at the Eid ul Adha festival.
